Could you be Rusyn?

Seeing how Rusyns are considered they're own distinct ethnic group, it would be really cool to see 23andMe specify this in their results just like they do for Ashkenazi Jewish. Most people would not recognize the Rusyn Homeland in their results. It's an ethnic group that was nearly wiped out but now there is a movement to generate awareness. Would love to see it added!

Please help - spelling a Carpatho-Rusyn last name

Ahoj,

My grandfather immigrated to the United States in the 1910's. He was Lemko, from the Carpathian mountains region. He and his parents are listed on official paperwork as speaking Slovak. When I was growing up though, he spoke the Rusyn language with us at home - he may have spoken Slovak but I do not know.

On documents when he arrived, his last name was spelled as "Churilla" by the immigration officers. This is the anglicized version of their surname. He died before I could ask what the original spelling was.

Most people in my part of the US are of Mexican descent and are very familiar with Spanish, so they pronounce "Churilla" like you'd say "tortilla" - this always irritated my grandfather. They'd say it like "Chur-eee-a".

How would this name be spelled using the Latin alphabet, in Slovak?

I am thinking it's something like Čuryla?

Thank you for your help!

Serbs, Croats and Bosnians who have met Rusyns, were you able to notice a difference between them and your own ethnicity in terms of physical appearance?

Rusyns are a Slavic ethnic group native to the Carpathians, despite their East Slavic language they are genetically much less Slavic than Russians Belarusians, most Poles and Eastern Ukrainians, many of them are genetically close to the northernmost Balkan Slavs, would you say they look like you or do they resemble other East Slavic people more?

Does it seem like I have Rusyn background?

Hello everyone! I post here hoping someone can take the time out & peace together what my Eastern a European background comes from? I was told Ukrainian but once I got to know more of my background I’m confused. Appreciate your guys help!!

My grandfather was born in Brooklyn NY to Ukrainian parents. I am a quarter Slavic from him and growing up I’ve always been more curious so I did a Ancestry familytree and dna test and this is what I know so far

My grandfather parents my great grandparents starting off with my great grandmother

Her name was Tessie she was born in Austria in 1897 her parents were also born in Austria. It shows her native language on a census record from 1935 showing Slovak but then when you look at the actual record the person wrote down Slayish which I don’t know if it’s really a language or misspelling. What I’ve heard from family was she was Orthodox and liked to cook she made many Ukrainian dishes.

Now on to my great grandfather his name was Michael he was born in Russia in 1894 his parents were also born in Russia, his native language as written on a census from 1930 show Russian. I know I got his last name which is Manchur I’ve seen some Ukrainians with this last name but it doesn’t seem Slavic to me

Now my dna test shows I have 24% Eastern Europe & Russia: It shows from this my communities connection to these ethnicity regions are Southern Poland & Eastern Slovakia and that’s in Gorlice & Nowy Sacz Counties. I also have Slovakia & Hungary and that’s in Western PreΕ‘ov. It shows Southern Poland & Eastern Slovakia and the Hungary also comes from my Germanic that’s 4%. Lastly separate from all of that I have 3% Baltic, I see many cousin from this side have some Baltic too

I’m thinking for my great grandmother she was a Rusyn? If so then what am I? Rusyn, Rusyn-Ukrainian, just Ukrainian, Ukrainian and Polish and Slovakian..?

So I started learning rusyn language and tried to create phonetic keyboard layout.

Edited: Added version 2

Hi. I started learning rusyn language, and as I'm lazy to memorize the layout of cyrillic keyboards, I tried to create phonetic one. I only testet it in Windows 10, so it should work there. Unfortunately I don't have means to test it with other systems. It should show up under ukrainian language, as I couldn't figure out how to make it work under Rusyn.

Thanks for trying it out.

Here is the link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1NFQMm8yGAiXMDSAEPXrM2umYG3qG2ZaP/view?usp=sharing

Version 2:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1oCOLDZaSC0-sngNyimXHFphqLKsxZqYV/view?usp=sharing

CHANGES

It should now install under Rusyn language, ISO code RUE.

Changed the dead key from shift^= to just ' so it should be less cumbersome to write soft consonants.

So for writing Ρ‡ you would press ' followed by c. It also works for я ю Ρ‘ Ρ— Ρ” and ь. For я you would press ' followed by a, for ю you would press ' followed by u, for Ρ‘ you would press ' followed by o, for Ρ— you would press ' followed by i, for Ρ” you would press ' followed by e and for ь you would press ' followed by q. For Ρ‹ you would hold shift and press 6, like when writing ^, followed by y.

It kinda tries to follow transliteration used here in Slovakia.

And image of the layout :

A Rusyn Awakening

After always being told our ancestors were β€œUkrainian” (my grandparents on both sides immigrated to Pittsburgh at young ages), I did a DNA test that identified 98% of my genes coming from a very small area in the Carpathian Mountains (the accompanying map showed an area overlapping a small part of present day Slovakia and Poland). After grilling relatives and much research on Ancestry.com, I discovered all of my grandparents are from villages no more than 200 miles apart on either side of the mountains! (Near Medzilaborce, now in Slovakia on one side of the family and Plonna and Wislok Wielki now in Poland on the other side), and our surnames show up in Rusyn lists and in old census data. Finally, one look at the Rusyn Facebook page further confirms it - virtually all the pictures of foods, religious symbolism, and events could be from my family albums.

My sisters and I are now planning a trip to the area - if anyone has any tips or suggestions it would be greatly appreciated!
