Brierley, 83, made his name as a corporate raider in New Zealand and Australia in the 1980s, was knighted in 1988, and also served on the Sydney Cricket Ground Trust board.
However, the millionaire businessman’s life was brought undone when he was arrested and charged in December 2019 after being stopped at Sydney International Airport.
His carry-on luggage was searched, police said at the time, with police officers discovering “large amounts of child abuse material”.
On Thursday, Brierley pleaded guilty in the Downing Centre Local Court to three charges of possessing child abuse material, with a number of other charges of possessing child abuse material withdrawn. He faces a maximum of 10 years’ imprisonment.
Brierley’s barrister Lisa-Claire Hutchinson said her client admits to being in possession of some images, but the exact figure is “in dispute” and lower than the police allege.
In court documents, it is detailed that one of the charges Brierley pleaded guilty to relates to possessing “photographs of young girls approximately two years to 15 years of age, in sexually suggestive poses”.
The second charge relates to possessing 1615 images on a data storage device, while the third charge relates to possessing one image.
Charges that have been withdrawn related to videos, more than 20,000 photos, and “word documents, being typed stories, that spoke of the rape of children”.
When Brierley’s plea was entered, he sat in the public gallery of the court holding a walking stick and was not required to stand up because of his age.
