Backstory: Eritrea was born to a vestal virgin in the service of Ares. When the virgin was found to be pregnant, and unable to tell who the father was, she was cast out from her temple in Atlantis and abandoned to live in the slums in the underwater district. There she gave birth to Eritrea. Together they suffered hardships while living in absolute poverty. Eritrea's mother died when she was 15 to illness caused by malnutrition. Having achieved independence from Ethiopia in 1993 (De Facto 1991), it has since remained on effective war footing. Citizens of Eritrea are subject to potentially permanent Military service and a level of state interference that is almost unprecedented, a fact that has caused a large scale exodus from the country by numerous civilians. The level of control over its citizens lives even extends abroad, where Eritrea has continued to extract a Tax for expatriates, although this source of revenue has begun to decline as opposition to the Afwerki regime grows.
Internationally Eritrea has recently signed a peace agreement with Ethiopia, which opens the border between the two countries and commits them to the implementation of the Ethiopia-Eritrea Border Rulings. Eritrea also has substantial ties with the Arabic Gulf States, acting as a base for Emirati activities in Yemen, and there is some evidence to suggest Eritrean troops themselves are present on the Ground.
The current Ruling party of Eritrea is the People's Front for Democracy and Justice, led by Isias Afwerki. The country is a one party state that has effectively cracked down on all opposition inside the country, with most of the opposition now organising abroad amongst the diaspora.
