For discussion--this is a long study but with some interesting implications. Pew has identified nine clusters of political belief. The largest is 16% of the population; the smallest is 6%. The Democrats represent a coalition of 6-9 and the Republicans of 1-4:
- Faith and Flag Conservatives
- Committed Conservatives
- Populist Right
- Ambivalent Right
- Stressed Sideliners
- Outsider Left
- Democratic Mainstays
- Establishment Liberals
- Progressive Left.
The study is long (and I'm still reading it) so I won't attempt to encapsulate it but it suggests to me that there is not really any "driving" force on either side; both may be struggling to maintain their coalitions.

Таков итог первого ггда нахождения у власти демократа, который въезжал в Белый дом на белом коне и, если верить CNN, был как стюардесса Жанна – «обожаема и желанна». А, к слову, эксцентричный и оранжевый как апельсин Дональд Трамп, которого выпнули из того же Белого дома почти что с позором и едва не в наручниках, занял в опросе Pew третье место, уступив лишь Бараку Обаме и Рональду Рейгану.
Если разбить голоса респондентов по их политическим симпатиям, то выяснится, что 42% республиканцев считают лучшим Рейгана, а 37% - Трампа. У демократов кумиры Обама (59%) и Клинтон (19%). Кстати, Байдену они отдали какие-то жалкие 5%.
Но самая интересная картина получается, когда сводишь голоса республиканцев и демократов вместе:

Рейган – 23%
Трамп – 17%
Клинтон – 12%
Буш-сын – 4%
Буш-отец – 3%
