Peloton vs Orangetheory

I’ve been doing Orangetheory for the last few months and I love it. However, I’m tempted to drop it for a Peloton, specifically the tread. I like that I can own the equipment, save money long-term and make my own schedule (I have two toddlers at home). If you’ve left Orangetheory for Peloton do you like it more? Less? The same?

Recently quit orangetheory after a 2 year OTF OBSESSION. My thoughts:

When I first joined orangetheory, I wasn’t eating healthy and I wasn’t working out regularly. I was slightly overweight and not strong. But otherwise I was a β€œhealthy” 22 year old female.

Orangetheory became the reason I was able to stick to a fitness routine, which is huge because consistency is what matters! Orangetheory taught me that. I went 3-5 days a week. However with 5+ days a week, I noticed my performance was often worse because I wasn’t getting enough recovery. I think 3-4 was best for me.

With consistency and better eating habits, overtime I slowly lost body fat and became very strong. I went from 31% bf to 21% bf according to InBody. AND more importantly, I started getting bored. I went to some weight lifting sessions and noticed how much weight I could move without picking up weights nearly as heavy as I was lifting at OTF. I’ve now fallen in love with weight lifting. I could deadlift (w a hexbar and wrist straps) 200 lbs x3 coming from OTF??? Insane! I love orangetheory. But since I was getting bored and hitting a plateau after losing body fat, I need more weight training to get stronger. This was my routine, but it was the main (only) aspect of my routine. Time to push my limits elsewhere.

TLDR; orangetheory taught me CONSISTENCY IS KEY. But I need to lift serious weight to move past this fitness plateau after losing all excess body fat.

Orangetheory 5+ days a week

Hi everyone, just started OTF in June and I’m seriously addicted. Lately I’ve been going to class 6x a week, tempted to go everyday. I understand that I am putting myself at risk of overtraining so I have been switching from the tread to strider about twice a week.

Anyone else out there who goes to OTF more than 5x a week? Do you designate Green Day’s? Do you go easier on the floor etc? How do you organize it so you’re working out safely. Thanks!

My first bad Orangetheory experience.

I love OTF and the very friendly welcoming environment I've experienced at most studios. All the coaches at my home studio are very nice. I've been attending regularly for 2 months and usually attend 10-12x a month.

I'm out of the country for the week so I paid the drop-in fee at a studio near my hotel this morning. It was honestly the worst time I've ever had.

The coach was this young-ish guy who was extremely patronizing and condescending. Maybe because I was the "new face" in the studio (and also a woman), but he seemed to be hanging over me the entire time (10 people in the class). He kept correcting me over everything I did. I wasn't rowing correctly, my weights were too heavy, my form wasn't perfect, my legs were in the wrong position. He didn't do it to anyone but me all class.

He honestly ruined my whole day and work out. I spent the last 15 minutes just counting the time down for it to end. I go to OTF to avoid that kind of douchey gym-bro nonsense. I left upset and will not be returning there the rest of the time I'm in town.

Is this a common thing? Maybe I'm sheltered because I've only ever had experience at a couple studios and my home studio is amazing, but this left a bad taste in my mouth.

When did you decide to join Orangetheory?

I made fun of it before I joined. A few weeks before in fact I denigrated it to a friend as running on treadmill under orange lights. I wanted to do F45, but the promised new gym in my area just wouldn't open. So I think I browsed the Orangetheory website and input my info. They called me. I went. I thought whatever, I will do my 12 classes and quit...but I liked it.

I love cardio. I have a rowing machine. I like weights. But I just never do all three at the same time. So OTF fixes that. And I feel like it's a tough workout, but not so tough that I can't do it 3 to 4 times a week.

Should I do 9Round or OrangeTheory?

I actually used to be a 9Round member, I literally signed up months before the pandemic…I loved it, I loved the intensity and how flexible it was and how it’s less 5 minutes away from where i live. I cancelled though after they closed down.

I do Club Pilates right now and work there, and am thinking of quitting because it’s too much for me on top of my 9-5 job. I also might cancel my membership there because im craving a little more intensity, and Club Pilates is $200/month unlimited. When I joined 9Round it was only $70/month.

Also OrangeTheory just opened up near me, I would say it’s like 10-15 minutes away from me. As much as I love the 30 minute workouts from 9round, I feel like I need to do the longer, 1 hour workouts OTF has to get better results? I would like to get in better shape, lose weight (with also cleaning up my diet obviously), and strengthen my heart.

Has anyone tried both? What are your experiences with both?

As far as sports bras, I have one older energy bra but realized I have been buying yoga bras for all my sports bras as they are the most comfortable but I will need some better for running.

Part of why I want the cert is to also correct what I've been doing wrong in the gym as well. The knowledge itself is valuable. OrangeTheory Partnership Opportunity They’re Missing

What is an OrangeTheory partnership they’re just missing out on in your opinion?

Have you ever been sitting on the treads thinking about why Orangetheory hasn’t partnered or done a crossover with another opportunity? This could be anything from apparel, food, services, company dual deals

How would you model the partnership or crossover? Where do you see the missed opportunity or the risk that OTF wouldn’t do said partnership

Something I’ve thought of was a dual partnership quarterly rotation with different brands or services. Something that isn’t cardio fitness but could be good for an enhanced flexibility portion or cool down/relaxation. Partnership would require the unlimited OTF plan+ additional charge (force the OTF hand to reduce risk of downgrading members for their split time) and they’d cut a deal with spa, yoga, barre as it’d open the door to members going over potentially engaged with different audience for OTF. Rotating would be interesting bc members would be more likely to want to keep the additional charge after they’ve tried a few classes or services from the other partnership bc it’ll change a few weeks later whether they liked that service or not.

Other real examples would include their Lulu collection was a perfect one (maybe not hugely successful but an attempt) or how my studio has done a 60min session on Sundays with OTF/Barre (one of the neighbors) or 60min session OTF/step class at community outdoor events for engagement

What do y’all think OTF marketing has missed out on so far?

Edit: in no way would I want to pay more for anything nor am I affiliated with HQ. Just a simple thought that popped into my head on treads and curious where others may have also considered. People have creative ideas that are very interesting

Braxton Hicks/Lightheaded during Cardio - Orangetheory

I’m 26 weeks currently and starting to have so many issues with working out. I see a pelvic floor therapist that has been helpful - she is also helping me deal with some new back/pelvic pain (yay new symptoms), and I have a SI belt to wear anytime I’m on my feet a lot (running errands, housework, cardio).

I do Orangetheory and have since before pregnancy. Last week I was able to power walk and even jog a bit and had like 3 amazing days where I felt great jogging. Well that’s completely over. Yesterday I was walking on the treadmill (no incline) at about 4 and started getting really tired and felt weird, so I slowed down. I kept having to slow down until eventually I was walking at 2.5 while holding the rails and felt weird and exhausted and a bit lightheaded. I found out later after calling my OBs nurse that I was having Braxton Hicks.

So today, I decided to try the strider instead. I made sure to eat breakfast and drink plenty of water before working out, and the same thing happened. I was not getting Braxton Hicks but was really fatigued, going slower and slower, and having to stop and rest due to feeling lightheaded. I called my doctors office again and was advised to continue to stay hydrated, eat enough, and stop exercises that cause this.

I’m going to try the bike at my next class, but if I can’t do that, that is literally half the workout that I cannot do. Lifting weights and strength training still feels great and I can easily modify as needed. But cardio is killing me. I am debating freezing my Orangetheory membership at this point but I’m just disappointed. I thought I was going to be one of those super fit pregnant women running marathons and my body just won’t let me do anything. I really like Orangetheory because it keeps me accountable but I do have access to a gym in my apartment complex. I’m debating doing my own workouts, just worried about staying consistent and accountable.

So my question is, did anyone else experience this? What changes or workout alternatives did you try? Anyone who did Orangetheory experience this and how did you cope?

Is OrangeTheory able to count for my cardio on a bodybuilding regimen?

Hey y’all I am just getting back into OTF after like a 2-year break. I’m really motivated to get fit so I’m also lifting at the gym because OTF doesn’t focus (in my opinion) on progressive lifts especially lacking in legs. So anywho - I’m also doing a bodybuilding program at the gym focusing on a different combination of muscle groups each day with a rest day each week with progressive lifts.

Now typically speaking pre-OTF I would slog away in my fat-burning HR zone for 60-minutes on the elliptical or stair climber 3 days a week in addition to lifting to log my cardio. But given I’m going to OTF daily I figure that can substitute as my cardio and I do not need extra cardio sesh at the gym 3x weekly.

I am going to OTF daily - I just wake up and go, it is a great way in my opinion to start the day and it isn’t overtraining for my body. Curious as to if since my body is accustomed to going daily I should throw in a few extra cardio only session at the gym each week?

My goal is to lose about 7 pounds of fat and keep all of my existing muscle.

Thanks in advance on opinions!!

For years, even though I consider myself to be active, I said that I wasn't a runner and had tried an OrangeTheory class years ago but wrote it off saying "I'm not a runner so OrangeTheory isn't for me". Well I recently completed the back at it challenge and this morning, I RAN FIVE MILES IN AN HOUR! PSA to Men of OrangeTheory: It's Okay if a Woman "Beats You"

-You are not "less than" because a woman lifts heavier than you. We're all on our own journeys and she may have been working at these weights for years while you may have just started. It's okay to take things at your own pace! If you're not there right now, you'll get there, I promise!

-Please don't try to correct the women next to you or tell them how to workout. Leave that to the coaches. You're not the expert in the gym just because you're a guy. It's one thing if you feel like they may hurt themselves, but telling them how to "row better" and "just watch me" is just show off-y and unsolicited advice isn't asked for most of the time.

-Having improper form to try and beat the person next to you because you're insecure is only going to hurt you in the long run. Whether it's running at a speed you're not used to or lifting heavier weights, just be okay with where you're at right now and focus on your own form. Stop worrying about anyone around you!

Let's all just be happy with where we're at, shall we? And also drop the old & outdated stereotypes that men have to be stronger/more in shape than women - they're toxic and not helpful to any of us in our journey to be better & stronger people :)

EDIT: This is certainly not every guy at OTF. The community at every studio I've been a part of is absolutely incredible, for the most part! It's just those few that ruin that respectful, supportive community feel by doing this.
