The Canas (Cheap Ass Network Attached Storage)

CANAS

I'm probably stupidly proud of this thing. It's a external harddrive enclosure with a raspberry pi shoved into it, but for the price it's a pretty sold little device. I have not messed with the hardware raid features, it's running openmediavault6 , and mergefs for the 2 currently installed hard drives to show up as a single volume. Cutting aluminum isn't my strong suit, so the back looks like crap, but It could really look clean if you wanted it to. Although that little usb-c U connector says it's usb 3.1 comparable it cut my transfer speeds in half. so I've ditched it and just have a braided cable looped out of the hold and plugged in.

I'm always looking for unique projects for using single board computers, and this one will be very useful in my home.

Network Attached Storage (NAS) possible on resnet?

I'm a huge data hoarder and just discovered that if I use plug in 2 PCIe NVMe drives my motherboard disables 4 out of my 6 sata ports.

I need access to at least 6 of my sata hhds I'm looking to get some kind of budget NAS for around 4~8tb for long term archival storage, but im hesitant to do so as I live on campus and use resnet. I use my own router which my Computer plugs into right now.

If its possible, any recommendations?

Are there any NAS enclosure available that lets me connect it through usb c to my pc AND network for phone?

I'm very newb to network stuff

Turn old router into a usb attached Network storage

I have moved house and I have been provided with a new router by my ISP (Virgin Media UK). My old router is a tp-link archer C4000, which I previously used to attach a usb hard drive to it. I would then use it as network storage and use Plex on my Nvidia shield to. The old router and harddrive was out the way and so I could hear the noise of the drive spinning. My new house has the internet wall socket next to the TV so would rather the drive was elsewhere.

I would like to use the C4000 as a repeater/range extender/access point and attach my usb drive to it again. I can then place it in the attic office, well out the way. Does anyone know if this is possible and how to go about it?

Appreciate any advice you all have.

Looking to purchase a Network-attached storage (NAS) device for storing music files.

Looking for any advice on purchasing an external Network-attached storage (NAS) device to use mostly for storing FLAC audio files that can be played on a network AVR that has dlna (and for general multimedia use including 4k video). I dont really have a price range right now as I'm still figuring out what features are available and which ones I would regret not having. Are things like HDMI 2.0 outputs, integrated media apps, and dedicated audio outputs worth upgrading for? What kind of built in memory or processing power is suitable for this kind of use? Is it worth hardwiring the AV connection vs using dlna? Thanks!

Micro-studder through AirLink on OQ2 with USB drive attached to router for network storage.

If you have a network drive enabled on the router you use for AirLink, you probably have issues with micro-shudders.

I've been using my usb storage drive attached to my Netgear Nighthawk router as a media center for other TVs and PCs around the house. I set this up a few weeks ago while I took a little break from PCVR. Started up HL:Alyx (among other titles) and was totally annoyed by the micro shuddering I thought I fixed months ago.

I disconnected the storage drive from the router and turned off all share drive settings in the router menu, reset and BINGO. No issues. Back to a smooth VR experience.

Clearly an issue at the network level when AirLink is in use. Anyway, thought I'd share and I hope this helps someone out there.

I posed this in r/homelab and r/raspberry_pi. Someone suggested I post here as well.
