Tens of thousands of holiday makers fled seaside towns on Australia’s east coast on Thursday as bushfires approached. Military ships and helicopters began rescuing thousands more trapped by the blazes. β€œIt is hell on earth. It is the worst anybody’s ever seen,” Michelle Roberts said by telephone.

> BATEMANS BAY, Australia/MELBOURNE - Tens of thousands of holiday makers fled seaside towns on Australia's east coast on Thursday as bushfires approached, and military ships and helicopters began rescuing thousands more trapped by the blazes.

> Fueled by searing temperatures and high winds, more than 200 fires are burning across the southeastern states of New South Wales and Victoria, threatening several towns.

> Roberts hoped to get her 18-year-old daughter onto a naval ship, which arrived off the town on Thursday, in order to escape the fires and thick smoke engulfing the town.

> Authorities urged a mass exodus from several towns on the southeast coast, an area popular with tourists during the summer holiday season, warning that extreme heat forecast for the weekend will further stoke the fires.

> "The priority today is fighting fires and evacuating, getting people to safety," Prime Minister Scott Morrison told reporters in Sydney.

> Thousands of people had already been evacuated from the adjoining region of East Gippsland in Victoria, one of the largest such operations in the country since the northern city of Darwin evacuated over 35,000 people in the aftermath of cyclone Tracy in 1974.

Australia β€” Bushfires took out two substations and transmission lines, prompting authorities in New South Wales to warn that an area home to almost eight million people and the nation's largest city Sydney could experience rolling blackouts, prompting the call-up of 3,000 military reservists.

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 67%. (I'm a bot)

> Skies turned black and ash rained down as fires raged across southeastern Australia on Saturday, threatening power supplies to major cities and prompting the call-up of 3,000 military reservists.

> Since late September, 23 people have died, more than 1,500 homes have been damaged and an area roughly twice the size of Belgium or Hawaii has burned.

> Bushfires took out two substations and transmission lines, prompting authorities in New South Wales to warn that an area home to almost eight million people and the nation's largest city Sydney could experience rolling blackouts.

> A state of emergency had been declared across much of the heavily populated southeast and more than 100,000 people were told to leave their homes across three states.

> Several emergency warnings were issued on Saturday, and there were fears that one blaze southwest of Sydney could reach the city's outskirts.

> "Today, we've had nothing short of a disaster. A very large fire-front came through... the high temperatures and the southerly change is putting a real lot of pressure on the resources that we have," local Adam Pike told AFP. "Guys that know the bush, guys that know fire, helped save at least 10 to 12 homes on this street... we are so grateful for their help."

Deadbeat US Military Dad fathered 2 kids in Australia, won't pay support. Help!

<Asking for a friend> US Military guy married an Australian civilian and fathered her 2 kids. He never lived in Australia, (would come to visit, or she went to visit him) as he was always on military duty and (according to him) couldn't ever reveal where he was working due to security. (He was logistics/driver in Middle East Duty). He never sent money after second child came along and eventually ghosted.

Aussie mum is just trying to get him to pay support after 10 years.

Tracked him down, know his name, rnak, serial number, social security number, command post. Sent letters to his home address in Baltimore, Maryland (on base), and emailed commander of his unit to get help. No help given (sighting privacy issues) despite proving marriage and his name on children's birth certs. What can we do to get him to pay his fair share? There is an Australian child support order in place, but he never responded to mail, email or phone calls. Can you help?
