Tl;dr: I’m wondering where Deja and Annie live in 2030. I’m also wondering about Annie’s job and Deja’s lack of a car.
In the 2030 flashforward in S5xE09 Annie picks Deja up from her med school rotation, and they ride together to Kevin’s house. Annie says “If you want to be on time, get your own car.” What this says to me is that Deja and Annie probably live close to each other. One might even guess that Annie frequently gives Deja rides—that, or Deja uses public transportation.
Here’s a clue as to where they are: Annie picks Deja up from work pretty early in the day. We know that because Deja sneaks out soon after her rotation starts. (I doubt it would start any later than noon, but admittedly, I don’t know much about med school rotations.) So they leave in the late morning or early afternoon, and by the time they get to Kevin’s house in Bethlehem, PA, it’s dark outside. And we know they arrive later than Tess and Randall, and it seemed to be already dark when Randall picked up Tess from work. So it’s maybe between 6 and 8pm when Deja and Annie arrive.
Funnily enough, when I started writing this post, I was going to guess that they’re in Boston. My thinking was, Malik went there to be close to Janelle, Deja went there to be with Malik, and Annie followed a few years later to be near her big sister. Boston fits in terms of distance. It’s about a 6-hour drive from Bethlehem, PA, where the cabin is.
But then, I noticed 2 things that make it seem like it isn’t Boston: 1) when Deja and Annie arrive at Kevin’s house at the end of the episode, Randall says “How was the drive up?” probably implying that Deja and Annie came from somewhere south of Bethlehem, and 2) the city where the two girls live doesn’t seem to be very cold. We know the deathbed scene happens in February or March. Deja sits outside to wait for Annie, and Annie isn’t wearing a winter coat. Other people at Deja’s hospital aren’t wearing winter coats either. Deja probably wears a trench coat mainly to hide her pregnancy. Everyone is dressed like it’s cool outside, but not cold.
So where could they be? My second thought was the DMV area (Washington DC, Maryland, and Virginia).This is where Howard University is. Randall wanted to go there as a teen, so it’s possible that one or more of his daughters attended school there.
