Who are you?

Vinniey PS Tan, the designer behind Cottage Garden Samplings.

How did you get started cross stitching?

I am a self-taught stitcher. In 2009, looking for a new hobby, I discovered counted cross stitch; I bought my first cross stitch kit and truly found my real passion.

When and how did you start designing?

In 2009, I discovered the joys of creating my own fresh and unique cross stitch designs. After creating my first design in 2009, I have not looked back since. I continue to design cross stitch patterns to fulfill my obsession with cross stitching because I have always loved stitching my own design. In about two years time, my enthusiasm brought life to 11 designs, in spite of my busy schedule as a stay-at-home mother of two daughters and a home based creative consultant. In early 2012, armed with 11 new designs, I embarked on my cross stitch design business. And in the same year, I quit my advertising career to focus on the joys of stitching and designing cross stitch charts; so I have time to concentrate in my real passion and I use my past experience to create meaningful works of art.

Where do you find your inspiration?

Everywhere. My inspiration comes from everywhere and everything around me; often influenced by music and anything I see that I like, whether it is a word, sight, photo, antique, my daughters' handwriting and doodling. Color is also a huge inspiration.

What cross stitch project did you have the most fun designing and why?

The Songbird’s Garden series. This series reflects my love of birds, flowers, gardens and nature. I enjoyed stitching and selecting the happy colors for each of them.

My fiancé and I are getting married in July and I want to have a friend of ours since elementary school to be my best man. The problem is finances. He has never been responsible financially and until recently lived in his parent’s basement (we’re both in our early 30’s now). My fiancé and I live in Maryland and he lives in Florida in a house with 5 roommates. Our wedding is in Wilmington, NC. I know money is tight for him and he does not have a car so we were going to pay for his hotel room for the weekend of the wedding. He is supposed to be my best man and the groomsmen and bridesmaids are all wearing tan suits/dresses with rose gold and green accents. He kept joking that he was going to wear a black suit and that it “would be hilarious.” My fiancé was getting pissed at what seemed like a dumb joke a when it occurred to me that maybe he doesn’t have money to buy a suit just for the wedding. My mom (who was his kindergarten teacher and so cares about him a lot also) offered to buy him a suit to match. He doesn’t have a car so it looks like we’d have to pay for his rental car for the weekend. Even with all of this we still really want him at our wedding so we were going to use my FMIL’s Southwest Airlines miles to get him a plane ticket, until we JUST realized that they don’t fly FL - NC. Last night is when I realized that we can’t afford to have him with everything added up. I feel bad and have to call him later to give him the bad news today. One last thing is we were talking the other night and he was so excited that a friend of his was picking him up and taking him drinking. He said “ I told her that I didn’t have money to go out and she said ‘did I ask if you have money? Get dressed, we’re going out’”. At that point I knew that we were going to have to pay for every meal he had all weekend and since my fiancé and I have other plans and can’t eat every meal with him, we’d have to just give him a cash per diem or something. My fiancé and I are in our early 30’s and have good jobs, a great apartment and each have a car but money is still tight and we don’t have thousands of dollars extra.

AITA for uninviting him to our wedding/dropping him as my best man?

Edit: the title isn’t perfect. We do not want to disinvite him from the wedding, just need him to pay for his own way to get there and meals

Deirdre held the note in her hands as she navigated the time bubble she borrowed from the Waverider towards the past. How Ystin managed to get a note to her in the future, she couldn’t say. They were smarter than she gave them credit for, able to adapt to the fact that their girlfriend was from the far-flung future, traveling through time to right anomalies threatening to unravel reality. To Ystin, the idea of such supposed witchcraft seemed as rational as breathing.

That’s why Deirdre loved them. Sure, she hadn’t actually said that out loud, but did she really need to? She wasn’t one for words; she let her actions speak for her.

Bringing the vehicle in for a landing in a denser part of the forest, Deirdre clicked the button on her wrist device, and the time machine disappeared.

It wasn’t hard to find Camelot; the massive castle was surrounded by a busy town, the people within buzzing in anticipation of the newest Knight of the Round Table. It was easy enough for Deirdre to gain entry to the castle proper; security in the Middle Ages was… lacking, to say the least.

From what she remembered, Ystin’s quarters were in the lower castle, fit for their low standing in the kingdom’s hierarchy. Once they were knighted, they’d be given a swankier room higher up.

Peering through the window, Deirdre saw Ystin pacing back and forth, shaking their arms in order to calm their nerves.

I’ve just learned that the Japanese Ministry of the Environment has published a Health Care Manual for UV (紫外線保健指導マニュアル or Shigaisen Hoken Shidō Manual; source for English title) since 2003, and that the latest version was published in March 2020. You can download it as a 3.9 MB PDF here (linked from this page on the Japanese website, which lists all the pamphlets from the Environmental Health Department). There is no English version.

Disclaimer: I’m not a qualified expert in any way, and would really appreciate it if someone could correct me in the event that I’ve botched the incidence rate comparisons (or anything else)!

(This is probably going to be boring for most people, but I thought it’s relevant in understanding more about what Japanese sunscreens are targeting.)

Here are some things that are specific to Japan, with some additional information:

• [NOT FROM THE MANUAL] This is something anyone who speaks the language would already know, but in Japanese, both “sunburn” and “suntan” are represented by the same word (日焼け or hiyake). The word for “sunscreen” is 日焼け止め or hiyakedome, literally “sunburn/suntan-stopper.”
• There are graphs showing the average maximum UVI for each month from 6 AM to 6 PM in Sapporo (peaking at UVI 8.6 at noon in July), Tsukuba (UVI 10.0 at noon in July), and Naha (UVI 12.3 at noon in July) on p. 7, with more comparisons between these three locations on the pages that follow (pp. 8–10).
  • [NOT FROM THE MANUAL] For those of you who aren’t familiar with Japanese geography, Sapporo is in Hokkaido (the northernmost prefecture/island, kind of like the Alaska of Japan) and Naha is in Okinawa (the southernmost prefecture/islands, kind of like the Hawaii of Japan). Tsukuba is in Ibaraki, and is roughly 69 km or a little less than 43 miles from Tokyo and is around the middle of Japan in terms of latitude.

So far nobody has given me a straight answer

Well...It's officially summer here in NorCal. Been right around a hundred and ten degrees for the last week, and supposedly for the next week. I was riding my bike, around five in the afternoon, with a light hot breeze, feeling that reflection off the hardball beneath me, and for some reason it all felt just right enough to be a sort of key to a memory. That heat, and me moving my body in that languid way that one does when they're slightly roasting, slipped my body into a memory of Iraq in the summer time. Al Dora to be specific. Afghanistan was never hot like Iraq or NorCal. Nothing has ever been hot like humping around the Dora in full kit.

The summer before I joined the army I did a stint at a prune dehydration company. 6am to 6pm, monday through saturday. Minimum wage. Working outside on concrete slabs, pushing 1200lb carts of plums into the back of an industrial dehydrator blowing 170 degree air out of it, in august, to be shrunk into prunes. Me and my buddy were a couple of the only whites working there who weren't managers, and we didn't speak any spanish. My god, it was brutal there. From 0600 to about 0900 it was relatively cool. I remember one morning in particular. The valley was socked in from wildfires, and we were staring at a little red ball that was the sun, sucking in the smoke, probably already sweating. At some point we both decided to quit. We found the foreman and said, "we quit.", and walked off the job. "Mail us the checks." Fuckin' white kids. We walked almost all of the twelve miles back to town. I think we each had a gallon jug of water and at least one joint. we stopped at the river and went swimming and got stoned and resumed our trek back to town, cutting through orchards where there was shade, at times. Walking along River Road in the blasting heat and unsuccessfully hitch-hiking, at times. Being too stoned for it to be so hot, and realizing we didn't have near enough water. Eventually, about three miles from town, some dude stopped for our thumbs and gave us a ride. He was on leave from the navy, that's all I remember about him. Thanks, dude, wherever you are now. That was the last job I had before I joined the army.

I was supposed to post yesterday but had an unexpected family emergency pop up and didn’t get home until the early hours of the morning, so I wasn’t able to post. Hopefully it’s fine that I’m still posting today!

Background: I’m a pretty messy spender and blow through a lot of cash pretty much every week if I’m being completely honest with myself. Half of my issue is a series of traumatic brain injuries I sustained – two playing lacrosse in high school and another during a car accident. Based on my MRIs, I do have some brain damage which has been very difficult to cope with. I have a hard time keeping up with daily tasks like cooking (so I eat out a lot), cleaning, self-care, etc. Although things have gotten better for me over the years, I am basically a completely different person than I was before. In regard to my spending habits, I used to be very frugal and always saved my money from birthdays and working jobs during high school, but I noticed that after my TBIs, I have a very difficult time with delayed gratification and impulse control. I am mentally and emotionally unable to tell myself no. If I see something that I want and don’t purchase it immediately, it will eat away at me until I do buy it. It becomes an obsession, and it is really starting to take a toll on me. I am on medication to help with my impulse control issues, but it really hasn’t helped when it comes to spending. I think I am also just bored and lonely, which leads me to go out to eat and shop more than necessary because I have nothing better to do. I will probably seek therapy in the near future to help with these feelings and with my impulse issues.

 

Section One: Assets and Debt

• 401k: $2700. I go through cycles of contributing a small percent of my check and then cancelling my contributions because I need to pay off my debts. I had maybe $20k in my 401k at one point, but I withdrew most of the money in 2019 in order to pay off credit cards. This wasn’t a great financial move, but I was desperate at the time.
• Investment accounts: $600
• Home equity: $46,000 (Purchased for $420k, mortgage balance is $404k, and comps are selling for $450k right now. The only reason I was able to buy the house was through withdrawing from my 401k in 2019 to pay off my credit cards and then not spending money eating out and shopping during COVID. I really don’t know why I decided to buy it, and it makes me really stressed about my financial situation.)
