I just recently rewatced John Carter (of Mars). It's a spectacular film that set's up an expansive universe if you are anywhere familiar with the books. I'm not really surprised at the treatment the film got by Disney seeing it's timing, but I'm super hopeful an animated franchise can be made to flesh out the whole of the material with Disney+ or something of the sort.
Rant over. Sorry if I seem pushy. I really liked the John Carter movie. It just needed better marketing.
My father, Johnny Cash, was incredibly prolific throughout his life. We recently discovered Out Among The Stars, a lost album of his that was stored away since the 80s and forgotten about until now. The songs on Out Among The Songs are brand new, never before heard recordings from my dad. Some of them are duets with my mom, June Carter Cash, and dad’s longtime friend, Waylon Jennings. I’m excited to finally share these songs of my father’s with the world.

Despite its flaws, Andrew Stanton’s “John Carter” (Of Mars) is a handsomely-made, surprisingly faithful adaptation to the source novels of Edgar Rice Burroughs. However, in good conscience, I can’t recommend this movie to just anyone. Too many will find it boring or inaccessible, and they’re not entirely wrong. The film is best enjoyed by those who can patiently suspend their disbelief long enough to see this centenarian hero get the kind of deluxe, big-screen treatment he’s long deserved. “John Carter” isn’t an easy movie (or story) to love. However, for those willing to lose themselves in the movie’s deluxe ‘Classics Illustrated’ treatment? “John Carter” may well be worth the time and effort.
Excellent actors and a very interesting plot. I watched it in the theatre when it came out, loved it and I recently watched it again and still thought it was great then found out it was widely disliked which shocked me
I was watching u/DarwinZDF42's video "Creation Myth: H1N1 and Genetic Entropy". In 11:04, he brought up figure 2 from the paper.
My question is: Would this one of the major flaws in these models i.e. they don't account for mutations prior to running analyses?
I'm not sure if this question is a bit off-topic, but if it is, apologies: I'm not sure where to ask this question elsewhere.
I really liked the purple-prose high-fantasy tone of the Barsoom series. People end statements with declarations like "I have spoken" or "Hear me, or feel the weight of John Carter's hand". You have princesses who are badass but somehow always in peril. You have lantern-jawed heroes chopping their way through armies of ichor-dripping monsters with a gun in one hand and sword in the other. Your heroes and heroines take "that would be dishonorable!" as a serious argument.
Brust's Khaavren novels have a lot of this; the Taltos novels have some as well, but underlaid with a certain sly cynicism.
There is another series whose name I can't remember which is basically America -- IIIIN SPAAAAACE vs the Roman Empire -- IIIIIN SPAAAAACE. That fits the bill as well.
So to recap ... over-the top action/adventure with a dash of romance and a non-cynical worldview.
