My friend recently got a Sony A37 and he wants to get an on-camera flash. I am pretty knowledgeable about camera usage in general, but I have always used Nikon dslrs. Recommending a good flash unit for his sony has become a massive pain in the ass. I am hoping someone can tell me if I understand the situation correctly.
- When Sony decided to enter the "professional" camera world, they chose to make their cameras with a proprietary flash mount that is not compatible with the 'normal' on-camera hot shoe. The Sony style mount is called either "iISO" or "Auto-Lock Accessory". It is based on the Minolta style flash mount. Sony continued to use this style mount until 2012 when they gave up and started making their cameras with a standard mount.
- The A37 that my friend has is the last camera Sony made with their proprietary flash mount.
- There are dozens of '3rd party' flashes available in the sub $100 price range that claim to work with sony cameras, although you need an adapter to connect them to the iISO flash mount. I have learned that even with the adapter, the flash will never have full functionality (TTL) with the camera, and everything will have to be set manually. Apparently TTL is highly brand-specific, and the ONLY flash units that support TTL with Sony cameras are the Sony brand flash units.
- Since Sony has stopped using the iISO mount on its cameras in 2012, they have also stopped making flash units that fit the iISO mount. This means there are ZERO flash units on Amazon which fit the A37 and support TTL. B&H has a few, and I am thinking of recommending this one, but I am worried the Sony branded one would have more functionality. B&H does not even sell Sony brand flashes with the minolta/iISO shoe style. I am guessing this is just because the tech is older and less relevant now. If it were up to me, I would just watch ebay for a good deal on one of these flash units, but my friend lives in Canada, and he doesn't like the idea of taking a risk on a secondhand unit.
Any input would be helpful.
My friend recently switched to Fujifilm over the summer, and has been far too busy to properly sell off her previous Nikon Z6 kit, so the task has fallen to me to sell her kit. She used this kit a good bit being a portrait and wedding photographer. But it was quite well taken care of, and far from abused.

Hello there,
I have a Canon EOS M3 and the built-in flash doesn't work. When I open the flash settings I get the message "This menu cannot be displayed. An accessory is attached to the camera hot shoe" even though there is nothing attached to the hot shoe. How could I fix/bypass this?
Edit: Iβve tried basic troubleshooting including cleaning the hot shoe, trying different shooting modes and updating the camera firmware. Nothing has fixes it so far.

Any suggestions as to why my flash may not be working on my d200? Flash works fine on a Fuji xe-2, also itβs intended Minolta SLR. Are there any settings in the d200 I may need to change to activate the mounted flash? I canβt find anything on google, thanks!
I'm tired of going through endless amounts of batteries for my hot shoe external flash. I only shoot indoors and am stationary. Is there any hot shoe external flash on the market that can be plugged into the wall and ran only off electricity?
