So I have put out a few regional threads on my region in South Louisiana but no one here is aware or cares what these increases will do to the average homeowner here. To protect yourself, never buy or even consider buying a home in a flood zone. After taking into account insurance and population shrinkage, this regional market is going to get scary in the next few years, and not taking into account major floods/hurricanes.
“In Louisiana, 80% of policyholders will see increases in the first year. For some, premiums may become unaffordable and could collapse the value of their home,” U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy said on the Senate floor in September, in a pitch to delay implementation of the program.
New rates for people without a current flood insurance policy already went into effect in October. Homeowners who have a flood policy won't realize the impact on their monthly nut until policies are renewed starting in April.
For those with policies, premium hikes will be gradual — an 18% increase, compounded each year — until reaching the final rate. For those with the highest rate hikes, it could take eight to 10 years of annual 18% increases to reach the final rate, one insurance agent said. And the final rate is what some local real estate agents worry could eventually price some out of their homes.
Those who aren’t forced to buy flood insurance based on the flood zone they live in or because their mortgage is fully paid may forgo coverage if they face big rate hikes, Bubrig Insurance Agency owner Bill Bubrig said.
Cassidy said the new system was meant to fix a problem where less flood-prone, lower-priced homes were paying the way for oceanfront mansions to have coverage, but an unintended consequence may be middle and working-class homeowners in our region struggling to afford the hikes.
Real Estate Agent Linda Nugent Smith says while people in certain industries are aware of the new rates' impacts, the general public needs more education from FEMA about what's coming.
"This thing is so far-reaching, and people don't know about it yet," she said.

I’m Dr. Gerry Bell, a hurricane climate specialist and research meteorologist with NOAA's National Weather Service at the Climate Prediction Center. My research into the climate factors that control seasonal hurricane activity helped NOAA launch the first seasonal Atlantic hurricane outlook in 1998. Since then, I've been the lead scientist on the team that predicts Atlantic hurricane seasons and lead author of the annual hurricane outlook. I've spent a great deal of my professional career researching, publishing, and lecturing on the science of Atlantic hurricane activity, primarily the factors that fuel or hinder storm development.
Each year, we monitor global climate patterns and use advanced computer models to predict how many named storms will form in the Atlantic, how many will become hurricanes (Category 1-2), and how many will become major hurricanes (Category 3-5). While our team can't predict how many hurricanes will make landfall, the seasonal outlook provides a general idea of whether the season will be slow or active based on climate patterns running in the background and influencing storm development. It also provides everyone in hurricane-prone areas with a great opportunity to get prepared.
On May 27, in fact, we issued our 2016 Atlantic hurricane season outlook. It calls for a near-normal season with a 70-percent likelihood of 10-16 named storms and 4-8 hurricanes, of which 1-4 could be major hurricanes. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

#What is happening?
Hurricane Ida made landfall in SE Louisiana on Sunday at 11:55am on Grand Isle as a strong Category 4 storm. The Greater New Orleans area is on the dirty Northeastern side of the hurricane and is expected to experience hurricane force winds for the next 6-12 hours.
Please take all precautions to shelter in place immediately.
