A list of puns related to "Hsing Yun"
"To rely on the Dharma is to always rely on the truth. We cannot rely on people because everyone has different perceptions and interpretations. Any single teacher is subject to birth, aging, sickness, and death, but the Dharma has not changed since beginningless time. So in seeking the Way, we must always rely on the Dharma itself and not on the people who teach it."
Although there are people who can instruct us and help us along the path, we still must experience and understand it for ourselves in order to truly make it our own. When learning from others, we should examine everything under the lens of our own introspection. In a famous Chan story, a student once asked Chan Master Zhaozhou (778-897) how to learn the Dharma. Master Zhaozhou stood up and said, “I am going to go take a piss now. Ah, even trivial matters like taking a piss I must do myself.”
I want to recommend a book, Keys to Living Well, by Master Hsing Yun. It's one of the best dharma books I've read: https://www.amazon.com/Keys-Living-Well-Dharma-Words/dp/1932293132
Interested in learning more about both Humanistic Buddhism and Buddhism in general. Since this work was written by one of the so-called 'Great Heavenly Kings' of Humanistic Buddhism and is also framed as an introduction to Buddhism, I thought it would help me do both at once. Thing is, it's originally in Chinese, written for Taiwanese readers. Since these Taiwanese readers would already be familiar with Buddhism and growing up in a largely Buddhist culture, I'm uncertain of how useful it would be for a Westerner who needs to start frons scratch. Any thoughts?
For those with an iPhone, you can find many of Master Hsing Yun's short pamphlets/books (and one full length book) in audio format for free download here:

This is an excerpt from Hsing Yun's book "Being Good".
The purpose of meditation is to settle the mind and allow it to look directly at itself. A deluded and egocentric mind may benefit somewhat from meditation, but no one can make real progress in understanding the mind through meditation unless they simultaneously begin bringing their behaviour into accord with Buddhist morality.
Huineng said, "If your behaviour is correct, what use is meditation to you?" He said this to emphasise the importance of morality, not to downplay the importance of meditation. Huineng was one of the greatest Zen masters who ever lived. In this statement, like the one before it, he is trying to free us from feeling that our practice must be difficult or oppressive, or that it has no further goal than itself. Once our minds have achieved balance, morality will flow naturally, almost effortlessly. And once we have learned to behave well in all circumstances, our lives will be in accord with the deepest levels of meditation.
How we actually treat other people is the best standard we have to judge ourselves. How they treat us, what we are getting from the world, the depth of our meditation – these are secondary.
Once upon a time, the Buddha had just returned from another town. As he neared the gate of Jetavana Grove Monastery, he saw Cudapanthaka crying. A crowd had gathered around him, with someone yelling, “You are a fool! Look everyone, see the foolish monk here!!”
The Buddha then approached Cudapanthaka and asked, “Please stop crying and tell me what happened?” “Buddha, my brother...he…,” Cudapanthaka tried to reply.
“Calm yourself, take a deep breath, and tell me what happened??” the Buddha asked.
“Yes, Buddha. I followed my brother and renounced, thinking I could devote my life to practice. However, I am stupid and dull by nature. My brother taught me a line, but no matter how hard I try, I cannot remember it. He became angry with me and banned me from practicing here. He said I’m hopeless at cultivation, so he kicked me out and ordered me to go home. Please, Buddha, I don’t want to go home, please help me!” Cudapanthaka begged.
The Buddha kindly replied, “Cudapanthaka, please do not worry. I will help you. Now rise and come with me.”
Cudapanthaka wiped his tears, got up, and followed the Buddha. The Buddha said to him, “Those who know they are a fool is not foolish. Those who think they are smart are truly foolish.” Cudapanthaka nodded and replied, “Yes, Buddha.”
After settling back at the monastery, the Buddha then taught Cudapanthaka a line, “Sweep the dust away.” However, just as the Buddha finished, Cudapanthaka had already forgotten the first line. Patiently, the Buddha repeated the line three times and said, “Cudapanthaka, while reciting this line, you can sweep away and remove the dust around the monastery. You can also help dust off the bhiksus’ clothes or anything else you see that is dusty.”
“Yes, Buddha,” Cudapanthaka joyfully replied.
In the following days, Cudapanthanka diligently followed the Buddha’s instructions. He tried to dust off everything he saw, including the bhiksus’ clothing. But this annoyed many of the bhiksus, who began to complain and even scolded Cudapanthaka.
“Stop dusting our clothes, you are disrupting our practices,” one bhiksu said harshly.
“I’m sorry, please excuse me…Sweep...Away...” Cudapanthaka said while continuing to sweep and trying to recall the line.
This made the bhiksus even angrier. One of them even muttered, “He’s hopeless.”
When the Buddha heard of this, he instructed everyone in the monastery to help Cudapanthaka, and that no one was to stop him. Thereafter, whenever Cudapanthaka was sweeping t

... keep reading on reddit ➡In a recent video on the Pure Land Buddhism YT channel, the host talks about Mainland Pure Land Buddhism and contrasts her own school with the "Shandao lineage", which she says is different from Pure Land as practiced in most of mainland China. Based on what she says, it seems like the main difference is a different idea of what constitutes mixed practice and which sutras are considered important. So what is the Shandao lineage? Where is it practiced, and who are its main exponents today? Is it a Taiwanese thing?
Are Hsing Yun and Master Huijing part of the Shandao lineage? If so, are these teachers significantly at odds with other mainland schools?
Once a pious believer of Buddhism was trapped on the roof of his house during a flood. The water level continued to rise, and when it reached his feet, he started yelling for Kuan-Yin Bodhisattva's help.
As he continued to scream, an indigenous man came in a canoe and said to him, "Get on! Let me take you to some safe place." "I don't need indigenous people to save me. I want Kuan-Yin to save me." Said the man arrogantly. The man in the canoe could not do anything but leave without him.
The water continued to rise and reached his waist, so he yelled even harder, "Kuan-Yin Bodhisattva, please come and help me!" A motorboat came out of nowhere and offered to carry him away. "I hate technology and machines. I want Kuan-Yin to save me." The motorboat, too, left without him.
As water level reached his chest, he continued to yell out to Kuan Yin. Then an American man flying a helicopter came and dropped a ladder for him, "You must get on now, otherwise it will be too late!" "You are a foreigner. I don't like you." Once again he refused to be saved, and he was finally drowned.
The man's deep faith in the Buddha allowed him to be reborn in the Western Pure Land. As soon as he saw Amitabha Buddha, he started to complain, "I recited Kuan Yin Bodhisattva's name with the whole of my heart, and he never came to save me."
"When the water level reached your feet, Kuan Yin sent a canoe to save you. But you refused to get on because you dislike indigenous people. So Kuan Yin had to send a motorboat for you. Yet you still refused to get on because you hated technology and machines. When the water level reached your chest, Kuan Yin sent a helicopter to save you. Once again you refused to get on. Not only were you ungrateful to Kuan Yin's kind intentions, but you were also very picky. Then how can you be saved?”
The sounds of streams mouth the word of Dharma throughout the cosmos; the appearance of mountains exhibit immeasurable dimensions of Buddha's wisdom. This universe is rich in life. Whichever isn't the manifestation of a Bodhisattva or his compassionate vows?

It really does, I swear!
For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.
I said "hey look, an escaPEA"
No one near me but it didn't half make me laugh for a good hour or so!
Edit: I can't believe how much this has blown up. Thank you everyone I've had a blast reading through the replies 😂

Dad jokes are supposed to be jokes you can tell a kid and they will understand it and find it funny.
This sub is mostly just NSFW puns now.
If it needs a NSFW tag it's not a dad joke. There should just be a NSFW puns subreddit for that.
Edit* I'm not replying any longer and turning off notifications but to all those that say "no one cares", there sure are a lot of you arguing about it. Maybe I'm wrong but you people don't need to be rude about it. If you really don't care, don't comment.
When I got home, they were still there.
