Hi, I'm about 10 weeks post-operation, where I had bone shaved and four anchors for a labral tear. I was on crutches for six weeks and have been doing PT assigned me, which right now is focused heavily on my glutes.
My issue is that I expected to be walking a lot better by now. I cannot walk without a limp, not so much because of my hip joint but because of the outside of my hip. It hurts on movement and gets worse as I walk farther, and when I have had to walk a few blocks it almost feels like it jumps around my leg. It's focused near the surgery entry point. The PT says it is my IT band rubbing -- but I've seen a lot of posts from people saying they walk without a limp much more quickly than me, and I'm wondering what others think. Have others had similar issues?

55/M, I am scheduled to have my left hip replaced in a week. X-rays indicated I was "bone on bone" about 1 year ago, prior to deterioration of my hip I was active and athletic. Injuries and Osteoarthritis are at the root of my hip issues. Both my parents have undergone hip replacement surgery.
I started to use a cane about 8 months ago and I have needed crutches to get around for 4 months. I have been off work 2 months due to pain and lack of mobility. I have been Tylenol 3 for a few months for pain. I am also on a blood thinner due to history of DVTs.
What advice would you give in order to better assist me in my operation/recovery? I am accustomed to crutches, does anyone think I need a walker? I have a list of recommended recovery equipment such as a toilet riser, a reacher, shoe horn etc. Does anyone have any opinion on which of the equipment is most useful or not a necessity?
I am really looking forward to a reduction in pain and an increase in mobility. Your comments/advice would be greatly appreciated.

As mentioned in the title, my 70 year old dad is scheduled to have a hip operation in about 2 weeks. He injured his left hip when he was in his early teens, and then again in his 20s. The second time, the doctors placed a steel rod in his leg. He eventually recovered and he's always been quite active, walking fine and everything, but in the last few years he had been getting bad pains there a lot and it turns out that the steel rod has worn badly over the years.
About a year and a half ago he fell awkwardly and tore his ACL in his right knee. He reluctantly had surgery to correct it, but because he wasn't able to put his weight on his left side due to his hip, it recovered very slowly. He was bed-ridden for months and this killed him, because he's only happy when he's busy doing something outside. Over time he got back walking with crutches, and eventually down to one crutch. It never fully recovered, however, and he still walks with one crutch, and is unable to fully bend that knee still. He constantly complains about pains in both of his legs.
A few months ago my brother took the initiative to put his name on the waiting list for a hip operation. Everyone was very happy about this, except for Dad. He has always hated hospitals, and even tries to avoid visiting them at all costs. I think it is related to a negative experience he had the first time his hip got injured as a boy, but he's always been cagey about the details. Time went on regardless and he was called for an X-ray last week to assess before the operation. He claimed he was sick that morning and wanted desperately to cancel, but we stood firm and made him go for the X-ray. He has since told everyone that the doctor said his hip was fine and he doesn't need the operation, but my Mom was with him at the time, and she says that he's lying. The doctor said that if he doesn't have the operation, he probably won't be able to walk at all in 5 years time.
Because of this, he's now trying his best to refuse to go for the operation. He claims that he has suffered all his life with it, and he will suffer on. He worries that he will never recover from the severity of it. My Dad is a stubborn man, and can't see past the fact that if he doesn't have the operation, he definitely won't recover. Now, with the operation in 2 weeks, everyone is worried that he will simply refuse to go on the day, especially my Mom, who has trouble sleeping anyway.
