Unfortunately the typical gut reaction against sortition is bewilderment and skepticism. How could we possibly trust ignorant, stupid, normal people to become our leaders?
Imagine a Congress that actually looks like America. It's filled with nurses, farmers, engineers, waitresses, teachers, accountants, pastors, soldiers, stay-at-home-parents, and retirees. They are conservatives, liberals, and moderates from all parts of the country and all walks of life.
For a contemporary implementation, a lottery is used to draw around 100 to 1000 people to form one house of a Congress. Service is voluntary and for a fixed term. To alleviate the problem of rational ignorance, chosen members could be trained by experts or even given an entire elite university education before service. Because of random sampling, a sortition Citizens' Assembly would have superior diversity in every conceivable dimension compared to any elected system. Sortition is also the ultimate method of creating a proportionally representative Congress.
Democratic lotteries are an ancient idea whose usage is first recorded in ancient Athens in 6th century BC. Athens was most famous for its People's Assembly, in which any citizen could participate (and was paid to participate) in direct democracy. However, the Athenians also invented several additional institutions as checks and balances on the passions of the People's Assembly.
Athenian democracy was regarded by Aristotle as a βradical democracyβ, a state which

So with Virginia back in the spotlight now, I'd say that while Democrats should definitely put in the work to retain all the statewide offices this year, their biggest priority should be to not only hold their majority in the House of Delegates, but expand it. That's right, Biden won six R districts, one of which went for him by >12 points(!!!), and so it's important for us to target all of them as part of our offense strategy. If we can flip four of those districts that Biden carried by the largest margins, I would consider that a pretty good election night. So here are the six districts and the candidates running in them with their fundraising standing noted as of March 31, as well as the major local Democratic parties you can also donate to in order to help shore up turnout.
HD-27: Debra Gardner, ahead 1.3:1
HD-62: Jasmine Gore, behind 1:259.6
HD-66: Linnard Harris, Sr., behind 1:17.5, and Katie Sponsler, behind 1:2.2
Virginia Beach and Chesapeake:
HD-81: Jeffrey "Doc" Feld, behind 1:6.8
HD-84: Tracie Liguid, behind 1:1.1 and Kim Melnyk, behind 1:1.2
Norfolk and Eastern Shore:
HD-100: Finale Norton, behind 1:1.3
I'd note that Sponsler is doing far better than Harris in fundraising for HD-66, but she's still lagging behind GOP candidate Mike Cherry. We also need to make sure that Feld in HD-81 and especially Gore in HD-62, where if my memory serves me correct Democrats had lots of trouble with recruiting after a very problematic candidate dropped out, can close MASSIVE fundraising gaps against their opponents as soon as possible, so those are the three districts I would prioritize for now.
All right, now onto defense. While there is a possibility we lose some gains we made in 2017 and 2019, we should work to make sure that does not happen. So here ar

I glared daggers at her, shut my mouth to prevent a Mount St. Helen level of anger from spewing from my lips and went downstairs to hide and vent to SO. Comforted by him until he basically said I don't know what to do, she is like that. I am crying and fed up with tolerating her racism at this point. I tell SO that I do not want to be around her unless absolutely necessary and I would prefer to have you with me.
Progress (I thought) came when he agreed to be with me when going to her house. That went out the window on MD when I got asked and guilted into seeing her for dinner. I have been isolating and they all have their shots. Along the lines of, "she was thinking of you and asked me to call and see if you wanted to visit, she knows you're alone at home" I hesitated and SO still wanted me to go. I caved because this was also a chance to see my JYMIL since she got vaccinated and I had been isolating. Big mistake.
This woman berates her indigenous husband for not listening when he has less than 30% of his hearing. I show discomfort at her verbal abuse and her response, "get used to it or you don't belong in this family." She repeated this three times throughout the night.
Her stance on mental health is atrocious. Many times she has said that people with mental illness need to grow up and suck it up. "Your generation isn't tough like mine." Toxic to the extreme. This night she has the audacity to say that people who take medications for mental illness are weak. I fell more in love with my JYMIL, because she shut her own mother down and SIL and I backed her up because all of us are taking meds for mental health.
Meanwhile I can't eat and my chest is actually hurting from the anxiety ROCW is causing. I have SO in the loop the whole evening because he is away for work. He felt guilty for getting me to go.
Some progress has been made. SO realized that she is being incredibly toxic with me and apologized for letting me be around her without him as a meatshield. He has finally accepted that she needs a referee or else I may not hold my tongue. I'm contemplating showing SO my posts to help drive it home that her behavior is not acceptable and to help support me when she is being racist.

>βP----Β is the only real empowerment women will ever know. Put all the hopelessly wishful thinking of feminist ideology aside and what remains is the fact that it is men and pretty much men only who draw power from accomplishment, who invent technology, build nations, cure disease, create empires and generally advance civilization. Women whether acknowledging it makes us feel warm and fuzzy or not, depend on men for all of that and the only tool they have at their disposal to have any sort of influence on any of it is the power of p---- and p---- is powerful indeedβ¦Sexual robotics may well prove to be the best thing that ever happened to women from the standpoint of their humanity.... what would that do to the vast majority of women who would suddenly have to prove their worth as human beings beyond simply being the owners of said p----."

The funeral director was asking us what we think Mum should wear in her casket.
Mum always loved to wear sarongs (fabric wraps that go around the torso and drape downward a bit like a long skirt would), so my uncle suggested that she wear a sarong in there.
The funeral director looked a bit confused, as did some of our family members, to which my uncle added:
"What's sarong with that?"
I started laughing like an idiot. He was proud of it too. The funeral director was rather shocked. We assured her, and our more proper relatives, that Mum would've absolutely loved the joke (which is very true).
His delivery was perfect. I'll never forget the risk he took. We sometimes recall the moment as a way help cushion the blows of the grieving process.
--Edit-- I appreciate the condolences. I'm doing well and the worst is behind me and my family. But thanks :)
--Edit-- Massive thanks for all the awards and kind words. And the puns! Love 'em.
Hello everyone, for the last few months I have been creating long form write-ups on a variety of unsolved cases. If you are interested in other lengthy write ups you can find them on my profile- https://www.reddit.com/user/Quirky-Motor/.
Also, huge shout out to everyone who voted for the earlier parts of this series in the Best of 2020 series contest. I am honored that so many of you remembered the post and took time to read it. Those posts can be found here.
Background
Serial killer Gary Ridgway confessed to 71 murders, but was only charged with 49. Of those 49, 3 victims are still Jane Does. Official victim counts place known victims at 52-55 women. The other 15 or so women are still unknown; their bodies undiscovered. But Ridgway and investigators place Ridgwayβs body count realistically at 80-100 victims. Who are these people?
Most of Ridgway's victims were killed in between 1982 and 1984 in the worst killing spree that the country had ever seen, with the murderer killing women and girls sometimes more than once a week. Ridgway continued murdering until at least 1998, but police believe he committed crimes until 2001 when he was arrested. Ridgeway claims that he started his killing spree in early 1982. He says does not remember killing anyone in the 1970s but admits that it is possible.
Ridgway has only been charged with homicides if he both confessed and there was one or more pieces of evidence against him. For example, if he led investigators to a body he was charged with that murder and all the murders of the women he left in the same cluster. He has also been charged with other cases if there was circumstantial evidence, fiber evidence, paint chip evidence, or DNA. He has not been charged with the murders of women still missing or women whose cases cannot be linked to him in a corroborating way, which is why the confession list is so much longer than the charged list. Also please remember that mass murders are not known for their honesty and we have to take confessions with a grain of salt.
For months I have been collecting reports of missing women from Washington and Oregon who could be victims of Ridgway. Some of this information was compiled and posted in my earlier write ups on Ridgway, but my research has slowly been growing. Today, I want to profile Ridgwayβs unknown Jane D

True story; it even happened last night. My 5-year-old son walks up behind me and out of the blue says, "hey."
I turn to him and say, "yeah, kiddo? What's up?"
He responds, "it's dead grass."
I'm really confused and trying to figure out what's wrong and what he wants from me. "What? There's dead grass? What's wrong with that?"
.

.
He says, totally straight-faced, "hay is dead grass," and runs off.
