We had to park by the Basin so this ended up being about 10 miles round trip but look at those views of Lincoln, Lafayette and Little Haystack! (My fave hike in the Whites). Recently visited Great Basin NP in Nevada at the tail end of my Utah trip, and wow was it awesome. It’s a very discrete park because it’s honestly in the middle of nowhere, and not on the way to anywhere or really close to anything big. So I can see why no one really goes to it. But it is absolutely gorgeous. A huge mountain in the middle of a vast desert, and it’s a host to so much lush green and wildlife.
I’ve never seen so many wild animals roaming around at a national park. Deer would just walk over the hiking trails as if no one ever hiked through them. Turkeys cross the roads as if no one ever drives them. I even saw a really cool horned antelope/deer looking thing with orange/white fur. Theres glaciers and amazing alpine smells. It’s also a designated dark site. So many amazing trails through the Forrest on the mountain, and gorgeous lakes with the mountain peak in the background. I figure I should share this park with people so that it gets the attention it deserves. Plus a large part of the park is based at 10,000’ elevation, so you get some of the best views around.

San Antonio is full of great places to go for a walk/run. Olmos Basin Park has two 1/2 mile cement tracks in two different spots. One is near the golf course and the other near the Quarry. Do yourself a favor and go explore!
