In response to MediaSharing and arts, maybe we should look at the Renaissance for answers. Specifically Cosimo di Giovanni de' Medici.

Cosimo di Giovanni de' Medici is quoted as saying, "All those things have given me the greatest satisfaction and contentment because they are not only for the honor of God but are likewise for my own remembrance. For fifty years, I have done nothing else but earn money and spend money; and it became clear that spending money gives me greater pleasure than earning it."

Those with the most wealth seem to be only concerned about gaining more wealth. But what we have in the Renaissance is a man of great wealth who lived modestly but spent a bunch of money to enrich the lives of everyone.

Now he could be seen as tyrant for using his wealth to control people, but his despotism, it seems, contributed greatly to the advancement of the human race.

Taken from an online biography: "His despotism established, Cosimo promptly reformed the system of taxation, changing from a fixed income tax to a graduated one. This placed a heavier burden on the wealthy, who grumbled that the Medici tyrant was using the tax as a weapon against them. The middle class and the poorer citizens, who were Cosimo's strength, were delighted and became even more ardent in their support, particularly when they saw that the funds gained through taxation, amplified by substantial contributions from Cosimo's own pocket, were put to use in public projects."

Public projects whether art, music, gardens, etc need to be reclaimed by the 1% who are very wealthy. I would go as far as to say that perhaps major corporations should by law take over the burden of public projects. Seeing how the governments of the world aren't in the business of seeing to it that the lives of people are enriched. Maybe this responsibility, one that impacts our future as the human race, needs to be placed onto the people with the most money.

If I were a billionaire, I'd find a few bands I like, crazy scientists and start paying them to produce things for the human race. Instead of intellectual property, these people should be paid handsomely within a reasonable amount to produce great works of art and to advance mankind.

If Cosimo di Giovanni de' Medici were alive today, I am certain we would have visited Mars by now and Disney's old works would be free because apparently history has already shown what great advancement can happen if those who can do it are properly paid.

This however is not a copout for the average person who can pay for the arts. I like supporting the musicians I like and gladly will give money to th

Cosimo Palpatine

I was doing some random EU research and come across Cosimo Palpatine who had a completely different backstory than Sheev and described the Galactic Republic way differently than what we all know. Anyone have any idea where this all came from? Was it just speculation of who the Emperor was before there was any canon material on it?

Frank Bonomo (1901-1987)

I found this interesting article about this guy Frank Bonomo, he was a soldier (possibly acting captain for short time). The reason I found it interesting is that it kind of gives an inside view of the life of a Bonanno soldier who took park in both the Castellammarese War as well as the Banana War. The link for the article is below:

https://mafiahistory.us/a024/f_bonomo.html

Edit: I also noticed that the article speaks of a newly made member in the Bonanno’s during the 70’s who was a confidential informant before he was even made. So if that’s true, that means Joe Massino and everyone else was wrong when they said that no made man in the Bonanno’s had flipped before that point. And then you know, whatever happened there..

'Ndrangheta: the fugitive boss Cosimo Damiano Gallace captured. He was hiding in a bunker

End of the inaction for Damiano Cosimo Gallace (1961), wanted for a year because he was sentenced to serve a 14-year prison sentence for mafia-type association. The operation conducted by the Carabinieri of the Investigation Unit of Catanzaro, with a decisive intervention implemented by the GIS (Special Intervention Group) supported by the Carabinieri by the Calabria Heliborne Squadron Hunters.

Gallace, believed to be the regent of the homonymous' ndrina, was hiding in Isca Sullo Ionio in an apartment in a building with an adjoining aggregate quarry of a local concrete production company.

At the moment of the bust, the fugitive was not immediately tracked down in the house although his 34-year-old mate and his 4-year-old daughter were there, resting in the bedroom. However, the presence of the wanted person inside the house was considered certain precisely due to the presence of his family unit at that time and in that place away from the usual residence of Guardavalle. Gallace, after a long and thorough search, was found and captured inside a bunker with access hidden by a false wall placed under a mirror in the bedroom. The door of the hiding place, connected to a mechanical device, could only be opened by turning one of the three knobs, the central one, of an adjacent wall hanger. During the search, the following were found and seized: 1 trolley containing about 35,000 euros in cash, 1 tablet, 9 mobile phones, 2 of which were damaged by the interested party before being discovered in the bunker, various sim cards not yet active and the hard disk the video surveillance system with a monitor next to the TV in the dining room to monitor the area outside the house 24 hours a day, which is also equipped with an alarm and a large guard dog.

Gallace, boss of the homonymous 'ndrina of Guardavalle with joints in Anzio (RM), Nettuno (RM), in Lombardy, Piedmont and Tuscany, was wanted from 25 November 2020 for the execution of a prison order, issued by the Appellate court of Rome, as he was sentenced to 14 years of imprisonment for mafia-type association and association aimed at illicit drug trafficking. In addition, an order for custody in prison is also pending against him, issued on March 15, 2021 by the investigating judge of the Court of Catanzaro and at the time of the arrest notified to the interested party, for investigations coordinated by the local DDA with reference to the crime of association aimed at drug trafficking. For taking part in the so-call

How crucial was Cosimo de Medici, as an individual, maybe even in the sense of a β€œgreat man,” to the Renaissance (or what came to be called/associated with β€œthe Renaissance”)?

I appreciate that a confluence of unique world-historical circumstances - the economic disruptions in the wake of the Black Death; the impending, then ultimately fulfilled, Ottoman conquest of Constantinople; the restoration of the Roman papacy from Avingnon; the post-Albigensian, Platonically-tinged troubadourism that found expression in Dante and Petrarch; the unique geopolitical position of Italian cities and power brokers to capitalize on all of the above; etc - contributed to what we call the Renaissance. But it seems like Florence was the hub, and within Florence, Cosimo.

My curiosity is about whether there was bound to be someone, anyone, no matter what, who played the role Cosimo did, and if, accordingly, Cosimo’s personal interests and priorities were relatively insignificant, accidental as opposed to essential, to the development and spread of Renaissance ideals. Or, on the other hand, were his unique (philosophical, theological, aesthetic, etc) interests truly essential to the Renaissance taking off, in Florence and beyond?

For example, would anyone aside from Cosimo have commissioned Marsilio Ficino to translate Plato and the Hermetica? Would (could) anyone else have pulled off getting the Ferrera Council moved to Florence? And, once there, to have capitalized on the wealth of Byzantine scholarship thereby made available as Cosimo did? And without Ficino, and/or the Council of Florence, would we have ever gotten Pico, Michelangelo, Raphael, Poliziano, Leonardo, etc?

I’ve just been reading up on this period of history as an enthusiast, so am interested to hear what professionals think. I’m sensitive to the criticisms of the great man theory, especially in its most superficial presentation, but it really does seem to me like Cosimo was the linchpin that set off a chain of events that only he - with his unique set of interests, resources, ambitions, and connections - could have.
