Every Tuesday Iโm going to try and post a Criterion movie on here to discuss. I am going to go in order of spine release and would love to hear from people who have already seen it or are curious to see it. I will post a brief review below as well as a question for discussion in the comments.
This week is Spine #17, Salo, or the 120 Days of Sodom. As of September 21st, 2021 it is unavailable to stream on the Channel in the US, has both a DVD and Blu-ray release, and was Laserdisc Spine #209.

This was a second viewing for me after I really hated this movie the first time I saw it but wanted to give it a second chance.
The one surprising element I found on a second viewing was the powerful depiction and critique of unchecked power. Director Pasolini shows power by highlighting atrocities and the perverse pleasure brought on by the institutions (represented by individuals that lead local and national government as well as law and the church) that publicly state they are working for the people to create a better world.
I think I can say that I understand why itโs called a masterpiece. I really hate the way director Pasolini chose to tell this tale, but I have to admit he told it well.
What I took from it on second viewing was the power storytelling and narration have over a movement. The adults in this story were all leaders of either the fascist regime directly or indirectly through the Church. They committed horrific acts on essentially high school students but needed to begin each night with a different story or macabre tale in order to stimulate their imagination and create a new way to torture their prisoners.
The terror in Salo came equally from the on-screen humiliation and violence towards the children as well as the way the adults smiled and truly enjoyed everything that was happening. There was never even the slightest hint of remorse or awareness to what they were doing. Every act of physical and sexual violence was met with a smile that I can only describe as a physical manifestation of blood rushing to their sexual organs. The actors, to their credit, did a good job of switching between outrage and arousal. Come da titolo, qualche mese fa mi sono laureata e ora sto vivendo l'ebbrezza di mandare CV, scrivere CL e aspettare colloqui con trepidazione.
Nel frattempo le mie giornate sono piene di vuoto, anche perchรฉ il covid mi ha privata degli usuali passatempi e degli amici, che al 90% sono tornati da mammร . Questo vuoto mi sta facendo impazzire, paradossalmente sto peggio che durante il lockdown di primavera, perchรฉ in quel periodo avevo qualcosa da fare.
Immagino di non essere la sola, quindi chiedo ai redditaliani esperti: come si puรฒ sfruttare questo oceano di tempo?
