Free Gingival Graft Recovery Good Restrictions

Hello, earlier today I had a free gingival graft operation for gum recession. The dentist did an excelled job as far as I know but the post-op info has been unsatisfactory.

I know from research that some dentist recommended certain foods to avoid after procedures like this. My dentist did not give me any food restrictions, and I was too dazed and numbed to ask.

I did not receive any sealant over the graft location so I essentially have a small hole in my lower lip (only the top and sides of the graft were sutured because my frenum was contributing to the recession). For my soft palate, I was essentially given an invisalign retainer to protect the donor tissue location.

My question is whether I should avoid certain foods, stick to only cold liquids for a few days, avoid sugary drinks, acidic stuff, coffee, etc? Obviously I won't be eating solid food for a few days, I just want to make sure if there's anything major to avoid. Thanks, and pardon the rambling!

Edit: I do not drink or smoke, and I have Crohn's disease, but I do not think any of these things should affect the answers to my question.

Got a free gingival gum graft - really REALLY worried about failure .

(23F) I got a gum graft 6 days ago where the donor site was my palate . The palate site has healed nicely and I am off both Tylenol and ibuprofen as I don’t feel any pain. However , I have become increasing nervous about the potential of graft failure to the point where I am having intense panic attacks about it.

I have followed the instructions carefully. I only brush the teeth away from the surgery site , I haven’t lifted my lip to look at the site (although I have smiled a few times and have talked), I do not drink nor smoke, and I have stuck religiously to a liquid diet .

Please , how likely is it for a graft to fail? Is there a way to tell without looking? I’m so scared.

Quick question about gingival graft post procedure in regards to pain management

Hi, longtime lurker, first time asker! My brother just had a gum graft for a recession above one of his front tooth. They had him take valium pre-op, and he can't drive anywhere and his mouth is still fairly numb, but he says pain-wise it's currently very manageable.

But he was also apparently given a script for norco, and he's thinking he may not want to have to Uber to pick it up until tomorrow. Upon inspection, norco is apparently hydrocodone and acetaminophen, and everything I've been told leads us to believe that an opioid may be overkill from a minor gum graft. I'm just wondering as it's generally observed, we have Tylenol and Advil, would a person ordinarily be able to manage some level of sufficient pain management from a normal OTC regimen after a small gingival graft, at least for a day?

Is $1,150 outrageous for a free gingival graft?

Periodontist quoted me $1150 for a traditional gum graft on my lower canine (gum recession), no sedative just local shots will be used. Is this a reasonable price or should i look elsewhere? (this is out of pocket)

On gum grafts in general, ive heard some people say they are a scam and you end up with more issues then with the recession, is this something i can leave alone or will this lead to tooth loss? My perio told me it was from hard brushing, so if i stop the hard brushing, with the recession continue?

Thanks

Sanity check on gingival graft recovery

I finally bit the bullet and had some gum grafting done on the right side of my mouth on July 15th. We did teeth 3-6 and 28-30, so a total of seven teeth in one session. All were done with my own donor tissue and I believe it was a free gingival graft since I had a large open wound on my palate.

So I got the typical recovery speech of pain for a few days and then proper diet and care for two weeks, but my experience has been a bit different. For the first week I had to battle some liver clots (scared the shit out of me when I woke up to these), and also some pretty heavy bleeding when the palate clots would decide to let go at inopportune times. Pain got REALLY bad on about days 3-6 and I had to take Tramadol every six hours like clockwork (in addition to Etodolac) to control it. That's all behind me now, and I had a check-up on day 8 where I was told that everything looked great.

Visually I would agree; everything looks healthy, coverage looks good, etc. But I'm still fairly sore all over (upper, lower, palate) and it's now day 12. Every day I get woken up by the soreness, and I end up popping 3-4 Advil over the course of each day to stay comfortable. Is this typical, and if so how much longer should I expect it to continue? It's a huge drag and is really turning me off of the idea of scheduling the grafts for the other half of my mouth. :(

Thanks everyone!

It’s been 2 weeks since my first Free Gingival (Gum) Graft which took place 5 months after my braces came off. My receding gums were worsened by having adult braces. AMA!!

Hey in my post history (not sure how to link to it) I posted about needing a Gum graft due to receding gums exacerbated by having adult braces. My braces came off in August and my first graft out of a few needed was 2 weeks ago. I had 2 teeth done. I learned this is not uncommon to need after having braces and sometimes needed beforehand.

I am still in retainer wear full time.

There was some interest in me sharing about the procedure so here I am, feel free to ask me anything about it.

Appropriate post-op pain medicine for gingival graft

I was approached by a resident at a dental school last year who wanted to treat my recession. This was fine because I thought I needed the treatment anyways, and I was getting a good deal. The first treatment he used skin from my hard palate (probably at least 3cm x 3cm) to use to graft from canine to canine on the lower arch. He prescribed me only Ibuprofren 800mg for post-op pain. I was stunned. That night I had never been in so much pain. The next day I asked him for hydrocodone and begrudgingly gave it to me (not much..) after some back and forth. He made me feel like a drug-seeker He said that studies show ibuprofen is better for pain relief than hydrocodone anyways (I was really tempted to ask which studies said this).

Anyways, we are supposed to do the second half of my treatment for some upper teeth in the next month or so, which I haven't paid for yet, but honestly, I didn't like the fact that I had to ask for drugs for the pain, nor felt like I should have even needed to ask.

So my question to any dentists here is, was ibuprofen in this situation a reasonable post-op medication to give me or was I out of line for even suggesting I get something stronger? And is this something I should bring up to him before the next operation if I even decide to go through with it?

Free Gingival Graft Feels Tight And Uncomfortable

I had a gum graft done across my lower teeth due to thinning gum tissue.

So now I have a thick band of healed tissue that has healed well according to the Dr. It's been six weeks.

But, I feel like the band of tissue is too tight. When I talk or move my lower lip/mouth, it feels like it's tugging on the gums. It's extremely noticeable and unpleasant.

Should I assume this is a normal part of the healing process and will go away? Or do I have to learn to live with it since I have a weird thick piece of tissue across my gums now?

Thanks!

Had a gingival graft done today. Here's how it went.

I'm not sure if this is the place for this but here goes.

I'm in my late-20's and, along with the smarty-pants genes and a love of books, my mother passed along her thin gums to me. This, coupled with some orthodontia and perhaps ill-advised extractions, has led to some extreme gum recession on many of my teeth. Most are ok (for now) but one in particular needed to be fixed. It was a gingival graft for me!

Now, to me, this sounded horrible. Not even 30 yet and I'm already in danger of loosing teeth? I felt embarrassed. And the cost (around $900/tooth in my neck of the woods) and my lack of insurance (self-employed! Follow your dreams! whoo... eugh) meant I'd be saving up.

I was given two choices - one where they would scrape tissue from the roof of my mouth to use for the graft OR Alloderm (aka donor tissue). Now, I've read that some people are grossed out by Alloderm. To each their own. My dentist said I could choose which method and I chose Alloderm. I'm shoulders-deep into a work project and I can't afford a lot of down time recovering so I chose what sounded like the gentler of the two options.

So here we are, the big day. I stocked up on liquid foods and then drove myself to the office. We had a brief chat about what was going to go down, I took some antibiotics and away we went.

There was no pain during the procedure because of the freezing. I was impressed with my dentist's suturing skills, though it was mildly unsettling knowing parts of my body were being sewn.

The whole thing took less than an hour. My dentist seemed really pleased about how everything went. I got some instructions to take home, an anti-bacterial mouth wash plus a prescription for more antibiotics and I was on my way. I began to feel some pain once the freezing started to wear off but I took some over-the-counter pain meds and it's been fine. I'd say a 2 out of 10 - just some light throbbing now even without having taken pain meds for awhile. I was advised to take it easy so I lounged for a bit (mostly because I had permission) but I'm back at my desk. No reason I can't get back to work.

I'm a little grumpy already about not being able to eat solids for the next 24 hours but hey, could be worse. I mean, if I HAVE to have ice cream for dinner, I'll do what I gotta do. I'm hoping to try solid food for dinner tomorrow, depending on how I feel, of course.

So, that's it! I hope this is helpful for if you have a similar procedure in your future! It wasn't the horror stor

My dentist and periodontist have recommended I get a free gingival graft ASAP. Advice/experiences/statistics?

Crossposting from /r/health.

I'm 20. About a year ago, my dentist recommended I get a free gingival graft for a couple of my teeth on my lower jaw. My dental health is great, but I lack attached gingiva on the teeth in question, so I'm experiencing recession in my gum line. I have no problems with this at the moment (no pain, no bleeding, etc,) but my dentist and the periodontist he recommended tell me that the problem will only get worse as I age.

Has anyone had treatment for this problemβ€”that is, has anyone had a free gingival graft? What is the success rate of the surgery? The periodontist says he commonly performs this operation and claims that success is most highly dependent on allowing the gums to heal afterward, but I'd like to be absolutely certain.

Gingival Graft Questions

My braces and "aggressive" brushing habits have recesses my lower front gums to a point where a graft must take place. I just have a couple question about this procedure, which is causing me a great deal of anxiety.

  1. Does it hurt? Can I request to be put to sleep during the procedure?

  2. Can I have it done while I still have braces or will my treatment likely be paused and resume after recovery.

Isn't gum graft a little too much for a very local case of gingivitis?

Hi r/Dentistry,

The question is in the title.

The gum around my front tooth (a pivot tooth) is a little darker, and it makes the tooth "pop out" when I smile.

I went to see my prosthodontist today and she said that she will make small amends to the tooth but that the aesthetic problem comes mainly from the gum around it being darker due to a local case of gingivitis. I was a little concerned because it's always looked that way and no dentist told me I had gingivitis before.

She told me to brush the tooth but mentioned a gum graft. She asked me to think about it.

But here's the thing. To me, surgery feels like a huge thing to do compared to the size of the problem, but is it really? Isn't there any other way to restore the original color of my gum?

Thank you very much for your answers.

Paralyzing anxiety and dread

Hi all. Let me start by saying I haven't been diagnosed with periodontitis, but I'm 20 and I'm almost sure I've got severe bone loss in my jaw. My dental hygiene was never what it should have been growing up blame it on poor mental health but I think when I started brushing/flossing at 18 it was too late. In July this year I felt one of my teeth had moved back in alignment from all the others, freaked out but my parents told me the dentist said this would happen because I had braces ages ago and lost the retainers so this is probably my teeth drifting back into place. They drifted back into place over a year ago this is something new, so I go to dentist they tell me not periodontitis based on x-rays, but gingivitis and I'd need a gum graft. So I get the gum graft, describe my symptoms to the periodontitis, by this point all my lowe teeth feel as if they shift and drift from place slightly and I can move them with my tongue, she asks if I grind my teeth and say it's probably that. Then maybe 2 months ago I felt like I started noticing changes in my jawline. I had 4 impacted wisdom teeth my parents suggested maybe those are the cause (I had been putting them off due to me being off of dental insurance since I turned 18) well I got the wisdom teeth pulled about a week and a half ago and that was not the issue. My jawbone is shrinking incredibly fast I can feel parts of my face that used to be bone are now soft tissue. When I push s tooth with my tongue I can see that part of my jaw bend. I'm calling today to make appointments and say f*ck these dentists and periodontists and my parents who all tell me this is not happening, I can feel my jaw eroding away. I just can't see how I'm supposed to go out into the world and function and live with this disease I'm only 20 and it only gets worse with time but I think I'm already at 50%-90% bone loss, how am I to go on and live my life? Any advice helps

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Try telling these sexual jokes that get posted here, to your kid and see how your spouse likes it.. if that goes well, Try telling one of your friends kid about your sex life being like Coca cola, first it was normal, than light and now zero , and see if the parents are OK with you telling their kid the "dad joke"

I'm not even referencing the NSFW, I'm saying Dad jokes are corny, and sometimes painful, not sexual

Should I get braces or not? Pros, cons and a bit of my life story (haha)

Hi everyone,

I would like to get some advice. Sorry in advance for this being a long post and for any grammar mistakes (English isn’t my first language).

Some background information

Bad teeth run in the family and I’ve had them ever since I can remember. My parents could not afford braces when I was a kid and now that I’m 23 years old, the urge to fix my crooked teeth is getting stronger and stronger. I’ve had a few cavities filled and I’m working on fixing my gingivitis, but bad oral hygiene habits throughout my childhood in combination with sucking a pacifier for too long, crooked teeth and a bad dentist have basically caused chronic gum problems. All in all, I would say that my oral health is slightly better than in previous years, but my crooked teeth are really holding me back. At the moment, I have a slightly open bite, though no under- or overbite. My teeth are really crowded; the top row more so than the bottom row. I have no wisdom teeth. The worst thing about my smile are probably my canines, which are in a similar position as the ones in this picture: https://imgur.com/R8vySBV

Getting braces or not? The pros and cons

So now I’d like to get your advice on whether or not I should get braces. I already know that I need them, I’m just terribly unsure on whether I should actually do it considering all the cons. My cons list is quite a bit longer than my pros list, and I will need to get a lot of things done before I can go ahead and even get the braces. The most important pro for me is the aesthetic one. I’m not an attractive person (I don’t need your kind but annoying β€˜β€™beauty is in the eye of the beholder’’ comments, thanks) and fixing my teeth would definitely help me in my journey towards more confidence. I’d also just like to be able to smile in pictures, ya know?

Pros:

- Makes better oral hygiene possible as brushing is easier with straight teeth.

- Aesthetic reasons. Once the braces come off, I hope that it will boost my confidence levels. Hopefully, I will no longer feel the need to hide my teeth every time I smile, laugh or take a picture.

Cons:

- Braces hurt.

- I will need to get several teeth extracted to make room. I think three premolars will need to be removed; two on top and one on the bottom (I’m already missing one on the bottom). My dentist hasn’t confirmed the number for me yet, but she said that it’s certain I will need to have several teeth pulled. This concerns me for
