Houston's Independent School District has decided to remove John Henry "Jack" Yates' name from the football stadium and replaced it with George Floyd's name. To understand this decision it is important to understand who both men were. Let's start with Yates.
Jack Yates was a former slave and a minister who risked his life to learn to read while in slavery in Virginia. Yates married another slave named Harriett Willis before she was sold and moved to Texas. After emancipation, Yates and Willis were reunited and moved to Houston where Yates worked hauling freight. Yates and Willis raised eleven children in a home that Yates designed and built himself. Eventually, Yates was ordained as a Baptist minister and was the founding pastor of the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church as well as Bethel Baptist Church. During his life, Yates helped purchase the land for Emancipation Park and founded College Park Cemetary. He also established the Houston Baptist Academy and Houston College. Yates was active within the Republican Party of Texas supporting more than twenty-five Black candidates over the years. Yates' lived the American Dream. He began with less than nothing only to lead an inspirational life. Yates is the sort of man we should honor.
George Floyd was a gifted athlete. He graduated from Jake Yates high school and attended college on a full athletic scholarship. Floyd lost his scholarship after his involvement in a suspected sexual assault on another student and returned home to live with his mother. Floyd got involved with drugs - both their use and sale - and was arrested and jailed multiple times as a result. For years Floyd terrorized, assaulted, and robbed the people living in the neighborhoods that surrounded the football stadium that will now bear his name. One of the more recent events took place at the nearby home of a pregnant woman named Aracely Henriquez. Aracely was there with her friend Angel Negrete and a toddler when an armed George Floyd forced his way inside. Floyd pressed the muzzle of his pistol against Aracely's unborn child and demanded money. When she cried out for help she was pistolwhipped in the head. Floyd admitted his guilt and was sentenced to five years in prison. He was paroled just seven years ago continuing his involvement with drugs and most recently counterfei
