Background/Training
This is my 4th Triathlon, having done two sprints and one olympic last year. My overall goal is a full Ironman and I'm systematically going from sprint to standard to half to full. This was the half. My training was a little inconsistant due to time contraints and bad planning. I was not in the shape I wanted to be in but I was not too far away, my swimming was slow but steady, my cycling was quite strong though I'd not managed many long rides and my running was good, I'd completed a marathon a couple of months before and still felt in good shape.
Arrival and prep
I had a good hour to get transition ready and wetsuited up and I needed every minute of it, I was well prepared but it really can take a while - give yourself plenty of time. I had a couple of iffy moments. My rear brake got clogged up with grass without me noticing leading to a panic thinking something was horribly wrong locking up my rear wheel. In addition I had brought my own nuitrition, I prefer normal food as opposed to bars, gels, etc during the ride and I realized that it would take an age to cram into my tiny trisuit pockets during T1 even if it all actually fitted and there was no way I could carry it for the swim as it was in several ziplocked bags. I remembered I'd brought my cycling vest in case it was cold so just crammed the pockets and hung it on my bike to put on in T1.
Swim
The water was 17c so plenty warm enough. I bobbed around in the water for a few minutes to get comfortable and chose my position in the pack. The start was fine, it was not too busy so it was all pretty relaxed. I immediatly felt a little off though, a bit lethargic and weak. No idea why, I felt fine before and after. So, the swim was slower than I was expecting but not horrendously so. However, I was very close to the back of the field which was pretty depressing, I really was not expecting that. I finally got out of the water feeling really down due to my poor swim and lethargic state and ambled off to T1.
