The development of Museum Movement in India (MMI) is divided in 4 stage, out of which the third stage from 1898 to 1928 is far more important because, not only it led to the appointment of Sir John Marshall (yup, the guy who retired in 1928, leaving India 3000 years older than he had found her) but also to the restoration of India's monuments.
Prior to that, the first stage of MMI (1784-1857) witnessed new museum collections following by the second stage of MMI (1857-1898) when many Princely states, their rulers founded museums collections at their home states. This was the first time when the Indian rulers took keen interest in restoring their history and collection of the locality.
For example, the Government Bangalore Museum was established in 1865 under the Kingdom of Mysuru.
Also, the Archaeological Survey of India was founded during the second stage, which is why there was a rise in Archaeological Museum collections. Also, following the revolt of 1857, there was a setback in in the museum works.
Lord Curzon, appointed the young and a student-turned-professor of classical studies, John Marshall and fully supported the museum related activities in India. It was his dream to found a Memorial for the late Queen Victoria, which later became the iconic Victoria Memorial at Kolkata.
He was also fond of the Taj Mahal.

PS - Student here. Usually we look at people like 'once a bad guy = always a bad guy' and with the whole Gandhi and teenage girls doing rounds on reddit recently, just wanted to share this.
History is the story of a man and how he behaved that time. We can't label him nor we should ever tag him/ her 'either God or Satan'.
I am only level 26, so I was wondering if you could give me an idea of what to pair it with and what robots to put it on.
