Genetics Team Name

I am taking a Genetics course at my university. We work in teams during this course and we have been tasked to come up with the most funny and nerdy genetics team name possible.

These team names will be voted on by Biology Department professors.

Any suggestions?

Update: The team name "Splice Splice Baby" won, thank you for your suggestions.

SEC Teams ranked by how many high schools they share their name with

This one just means more. Like the other posts I used this site: http://highschoolnicknames.homestead.com/

  • Auburn/LSU/Missouri Tigers: 881 Unsurprisingly for a mascot that over a fifth of SEC schools use, the Tigers are used by a great many high schools. When including variations the number reaches 930, with the most interesting of those being the "Flyin' Tigers" and "Hustlin Tigers"
    • Regarding Auburn, there are also 16 schools nicknamed the "War Eagles", all of which are in the south but none of which are in Alabama.
  • Georgia/Mississippi State Bulldogs: 806 A very popular mascot name, but one which doesn't appear in any other P5 conference. Including variations, the number rounds up to 849. Interestingly, two schools use in NJ and NM use the spelling "Bulldawgs".
  • Kentucky Wildcats: 669 Nice. What team? Wildcats! This number goes up to 697 when including Wildcat variations, including a cool school in Watsonville, CA that uses "Wildcatz"
  • Ole Miss Rebels: 186 Which becomes 196 when adding variations, including the "Cockney Rebels" of the British School of Washington, DC.
  • Florida Gators: 74 Despite being native to the southeastern US, a decent number of northeastern and western schools use the Gator as their mascot. A small number of schools use the variations "Lady", "Fighting", "Golden", and "Wild" to round out the overall number to 79.
  • Texas A&M Aggies: 17 Unsurprisingly, most of these schools are located in the south or in traditionally rural areas. A notable exception is Saint Agnes in Saint Paul, MN, but I can't fault them for wanting that alliteration.
  • Vanderbilt Commodores: 11 These schools are scattered along the east coast and midwest, with none of them being in TN. Including "Lady Commodores" this number is bumped up to 13. I've always loved this nickname and wish more schools would use it.
  • Alabama Crimson Tide: 9 Despite its great fame at the college level, the Crimson Tide mascot is nary to be found in high school, let alone in the south, with 8 of the schools that use it ironically being in the north. The lone southern school that uses this name is Minden HS in Louisiana. Honorable mentions go to the Crimson Wave in Petersburg, VA and the Crimson Pride at Roncalli Catholic in Omaha.
  • Tennessee Volunteers: 6 All of these schools are in the south, but none are in Tennessee. Their players likely live up to the nickname much more so

Science AMA Series: I'm Yaniv Erlich; my team used DNA as a hard-drive to store a full operating system, movie, computer virus, and a gift card. I am also the creator of DNA.Land. Soon, I'll be the Chief Science Officer of MyHeritage, one of the largest genetic genealogy companies. Ask me anything!

Hello Reddit! I am: Yaniv Erlich: Professor of computer science at Columbia University and the New York Genome Center, soon to be the Chief Science Officer (CSO) of MyHeritage.

My lab recently reported a new strategy to record data on DNA. We stored a whole operating system, a film, a computer virus, an Amazon gift, and more files on a drop of DNA. We showed that we can perfectly retrieved the information without a single error, copy the data for virtually unlimited times using simple enzymatic reactions, and reach an information density of 215Petabyte (that’s about 200,000 regular hard-drives) per 1 gram of DNA. In a different line of studies, we developed DNA.Land that enable you to contribute your personal genome data. If you don't have your data, I will soon start being the CSO of MyHeritage that offers such genetic tests.

I'll be back at 1:30 pm EST to answer your questions! Ask me anything!

For years, Chinese national team coaches claimed their girls were small and thin due to Asian genetics. Chow taking over the team and revealing the lack of focus on conditioning, as well as the rise of USA gymnasts Hurd, Lee, and Eaker, shows this isn't really true... Will they change?

Disclaimer: This is NOT intended to body shame gymnasts in any way, and I hope no commenters use this thread as an opportunity to dissect individual gymnasts' body types. This is solely meant as an observation of how outdated coaching techniques from the pixie era may be harmful to the Chinese program and could be hindering their progress.

For years, the Chinese coaches have claimed that their gymnasts are underpowered and physically weaker due to their heritage, and that's why they're traditionally strong on bars/beam and not floor/vault.

However, Chow has said that the Chinese girls train a large number of hours on skills and do not dedicate near as much time to strength and conditioning, which is the basis of all their skills (I think Mihai said something similar about the Aussies, and this seems to be a trend in some "weaker" gymnastics nations). The other Chinese coaches also seem to have forgotten that Cheng Fei or Mo Huilan existed. Chow, a coach raised under the Chinese system, placed a huge amount of emphasis on physical conditioning for his elites like Johnson and Douglas.

I mean this in the most respectful way possible, but the girls of Asian descent (both Hurd and Eaker were born in China and Lee is of Hmong descent) who compete from the USA are not physically frail looking the way Shang Chunsong or Liu Tingting are (this is also not intended to be a diss of thinner gymnasts at all, I myself was a very frail thin beam specialist when I was a gymnast). I was born as the pixie era was starting to wind down but was trained by an old fashioned coach. It appears these old fashioned Chinese coaches who value an extremely lithe and thin physique over the ability to have strength to do harder skills is a hindrance to them on the international elite stage.

Ultimately, I quit gymnastics due to anorexia. What effects do we see in the Chinese program (or others) from this focus on thinness over strength, and how many gymnasts are not reaching their potential because they either get injured, quit due to the pressure (like I did), or compete at the international level but aren't able to win because they lack the difficulty or stamina?

I adored Chunsong in 2016 and thought she deserved the bronze over Aliya (though let's not start that argument!) and I can only imagine how much better she could've been under a coach like Mihai who had a focus on strength (though I'm aware Mihai isn't really body positive either). I know she was malnourished as a chi

PLOS Science Wednesday: Hi reddit, my name is Brian and I published a study in PLOS Biology showing birds in the tropics have greater genetic variation than those in more temperate habitats – Ask Me Anything!

Hi Reddit,

My name is Brian Smith and I am an Assistant Curator of Birds at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. My research focuses on understanding the evolutionary relationships and origins of bird species.

I will be joined by Glenn Seeholzer who is a postdoctoral researcher at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. He studies patterns of genetic diversity and speciation in Neotropical birds.

We, along with other colleagues, recently published a paper titled β€œA latitudinal phylogeographic diversity gradient in birds" in PLOS Biology. In our study we found that tropical bird species have greater genetic variation than those occurring in temperate habitats. Our findings have important implications for understanding why tropical rainforests have so many species.

We will be answering your questions at 1pm ET. Send us your questions!

PLOS Science Wednesday: Hi reddit, my name is Joel and I published a PLOS Pathogens study investigating whether viral genetic sequences of HIV-1 are similar between sexual and social networks in New York City – Ask Me Anything!

Hi Reddit,

My name is Joel Wertheim and I am an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Diego. My research focuses on the molecular evolution of RNA viruses, like HIV. In my lab, I am particularly interested in figuring out how to translate insights from HIV evolutionary biology into practical public health action.

We recently published a study β€˜Social and Genetic Networks of HIV-1 Transmission in New York City’ in PLOS Pathogens. In this study we asked HIV-infected individuals to name their sexual partners and injection drug-using partners. When these partners were also infected with HIV, we investigated whether their viruses were genetically similar enough to support a shared transmission history. Our findings suggest that incorporating HIV genetic sequence data can improve public health activities.

I will be answering your questions at 1pm ET – Ask Me Anything!

Do Native Americans really find the football team name β€œThe Chiefs” offensive?

I’ve been seeing people say it’s a racist football team name, but I honestly just don’t see why. Maybe I’m being ignorant; however, Chiefs isn’t a racist term like the Red Skins. They don’t do anything that comes off as racist (from my perspective). Kansas has a lot of cities named after Native Americans. It seems to be rooted from their Native American past than anything else.

It just doesn’t seem that bad to me, but maybe I’m missing key factors here.
