G. A. Henty was a 19th author that wrote a ton of historical fiction novels. His works are almost invariably about a young boy of English or partial English descent who gets mixed up in one adventure or another at one point in history or another. These include: Colonial India/southeast Asia. The Spanish Main, England during the time of King Alfred, the Netherlands during war with Spain, Carthage, Egypt and countless others. To be quite honest I find the plots of most of these relatively humdrum, interesting but definitely not gripping. But the settings and backround are amazing. They provide extremely detailed descriptions of all the different societies and time periods, as well as insight into how someone in 19th century Europe viewed the rest of the world/history. Reading/listening to these books has had a massive influence on my world. He delves into the various types of competing forces throughout history, the Spanish Inquisition and the effect it had on Europe, the trading empires of Genoa and Venice, The warring Rajs and kingdoms of India and Southeast Asia. He spends entire pages describing some minor detail about 14th century Venetian government. It's a worldbuilders fantasy imo.
I have been using my Henty Rolled Backpack most of this year to transport my suit/shirts to work.
I have noted that sometimes rain seeps into my backpack soiling my shirt collar or shoulder.
Today I placed a platic bag over my shirt, inside the bag. Collar and shoulder OK, but as the bag did not cover the whole shirt, I have now an unsightly brown patch on the side of my white shirt.
Anyone else use a Henty and find it less than water proof?
I am thinking of either getting a longer plastic bag, or a back pack rain cover.
I am not ready to replace it and I have found no other alternative that allows me to carry a suit and short (relatively) un-crumpled.
Just curious how many people have read any of G. A. Henty or R. M. Ballantyne's books? And if so, what titles are the best/worst?
So, to cut a long story short I want to buy a pair of seal skin shoes from the seal skin boot store in hentiesbaai. I have looked high and low for online info and an email address to no avail.
I tried to get a pair when I was over there a month ago, but they didn’t have my size in stock.
