[Movies] Of internet petitions and spoiled fruit: how one fan's love for 2016's Suicide Squad drove him to try to shut down Rotten Tomatoes

After the positive reception to my post about Warner Bros.' fake Frosty film, I thought I'd share another favorite story of mine from the DCEU. This one definitely got a lot more attention.

The DCEU

I already covered most of the early history of the DC Extended Universe in my previous post but here's the short version. After the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, DC and Warner Bros. wanted to create their own cinematic universe using characters from DC comics. They began with Man of Steel, a movie covering the origin story of Superman. It received mixed reviews. And where did a large amount of people read about these mixed reviews? On Rotten Tomatoes.

Rotten Tomatoes

For those who don't know, Rotten Tomatoes is a review-aggregation website. Their staff collects online movie reviews and each review is classified by the reviewer as "Fresh" or "Rotten." Based on the number of "Fresh" and "Rotten" reviews, the site then assigns is a percentage score and a rating. Anything from 70% to 100% (and a certain number of reviews) is "Certified Fresh", anything above 60% that doesn't meet the previously mentioned review threshold is "Fresh", and anything below 60% is "Rotten." Then, they'll write a short blurb called the "Critics Consensus" that's exactly what it sounds like.

The important thing to understand about Rotten Tomatoes is that they don't review movies. Outside of things like their podcast where staff members discuss their own opinions, the bread and butter of RT is the aggregated scores. The main purpose of the site is to provide a place to access hundreds of critic reviews at once and to give a general idea of overall opinions on the movie. For people who prefer reviews from regular people, each movie's page also has an audience score, made up of ratings and reviews provided by users of the site.

Rotten Tomatoes has had a pretty big influence on people's decisions to see certain movies. As the internet has grown, the site has gotten more and more popular and the scores they display have definitely impacted movie performance. Movies like Baywatch, Pirates of the Caribbean 5, and the Mummy were expected to have pretty decent box office openings but ended up underperforming after receiving low Rotten Tomatoes scores. Movies that get good scores will usually end up using them in marketing, and studios have embargoed ea

Law's fruit has room to grow, and not because he hasn't committed suicide.

So I keep seeing videos/comments/discussions about Trafalgar Law and how he can't be considered awakened because he hasn't used the Ope Ope's final technique, eternal youth at the cost of one's life.

What if the "final technique", is a skill known as soon as the fruit is eaten, and not an "awakened" feat?

I back this up with the OP world as a whole knows what the fruit could do and what it looked like prior to Law eating it, and put a price tag to it to match.

Both Corozan and Doffy knew it was the only fruit that could save Law, AND new the eternal life use of it. That is what Doffy wanted to exploit, and Cora to prevent at all cost.

I think granting eternal life at the cost of ones life is a base ability of the ope ope, which is why it keeps getting used and then recycled. It might even explain the Gorosei, or Im. Users of the ope do not live long lives, only being 'gifted' the fruit for one task and one task only.

I feel like, almost more than any other fruit, the Ope was controlled and used by the WG. Once it slipped out of their control, of course they'd put a high price tag on its recovery. Hell Vergo was a vice admiral spy, he might be the reason it was "lost" in the first place.

This idea gives Law the time to explore the fruit more than any of his predecessors, maybe allowing fine tuning that ability, to give SOME life to extend anothers, instead of an all or nothing affair. He might not be awakened yet, but he might also be the most adept user of the fruit ever.

Mr. Fruit has been one of the main reasons I choose life over suicide

As crazy as it sounds the videos and streams mr fruit consistently puts out have been one of the only things I look forward to. I suffer from a serious illness I’ve yet to find and it’s been a grueling process going doctor to doctor. There are few things I look forward to other than watching Mr Fruits videos and Robs streams. Thank you for always making content and being good to your fans.

I saw someone make a similar post and I felt it important that Mr. Fruit knows how important he his in my life and others.

I accidentally created flightless suicidal fruit flies.

I don’t know if this is the correct place to post this but I am by no means a β€œbio hacker”

A few months ago I had left for a trip. During that time my fridge stopped working and for about a week fruit flies began to reproduce inside. I opened the fridge and sprayed a significant amount of raid and decided to allow it to kill the flies before trying to clean it out. To my surprise some survived so I hit it again with a substantial amount of raid.

Fast forward a few weeks later after getting a new fridge I noticed a growing number of fruit flies walking around in my kitchen. Mostly flightless. (It’s winter here so they’re bound inside my house for survival).

I figured the survivors of the raid gassing of sorts reproduced and the chemicals may have created birth defects resulting in flightless flies (since they no longer can fly I have called them WALKS) and they passed that to their offspring… then I noticed something strange.

I have NO clue where the hell these buggers are hiding. I have searched everywhere and found them nowhere but they’re everywhere. I have tried my best to eradicate them but their reproduction rate is impressive to say the least. There aren’t just thousands of fruit walks visible in my house until… each morning when I wake up I find nearly hundreds of dead walks who have made the journey to a window that allows cold air to come in.

I noticed the walks will walk to the near freezing window then stay there until they die. I have a few theories as to why this happens. Maybe the cold air slows their metabolism so much they end up getting stuck near the window and just freezing to death but regardless… it looks as if they’re suicidal.

Since I’m now sharing my home with walks here are some interesting survival techniques I’ve noticed they used since they can’t fly…

Some have learned to jump. And jump well. Some have developed lightening speed running but most just walk around when I try to come at them. I can’t keep using chemical warfare so I just vacuum them them up with a hand vacuum.. after a while the walks figured out that the vacuum sound means death so hide. I’ve also noticed they are VERY attracted to paint. I’m not entirely sure if this is useful to anyone or interesting but I’m about ready to hire an exterminator but if anyone wants me to do more research on my accident let me know (:

[TOMT][Animated Short][Early 2000s] a Weird animated short featuring sad orange (fruit) who ends up commiting suicide in the end

Excuse my bad english

I distinctly remember that it was titled ''Sad Orange''. It begins in some kind of laboratory or factory where fruits and vegetables are made and then send to homes around town. The short then focuses on Orange that accidentally get's thrown out of the window to the streets below. It then goes around and tries to find a family to stay with while looking very sad. There is scene where the Orange looks up to someones window and sees silhouette of people getting their fruits and veggies delievered to them and they look super happy. The short then ends abruptly as the orange goes to the bridge and throws itself into the river below.

There might be some mistakes in there. Whole short was really weird and somber in tone. It went for about 5 minutes and didn't have any dialogue. My friend showed me the video from her computer when I was about 8 years old. This was at the time when major sites like Youtube did not exist. Maybe around 2000-2004?

Some other little things I may or may not recall correctly:

  • Factory/Laboratory had whimsical looking machine that made fruits and gave them life.
  • Most of the short was set during a rainy night.
  • Animation style is kinda similar to the Veggietales in the way how characters walk by hopping and don't have any limbs.
  • Color palette is mostly dark blues and bright yellows.
  • And.... sigh... it's not annoying orange.

I've tried my best to find it myself but haven't been able to. I hope someone here knows which short I'm talking about :).

Prophets, Good Fruit, & 32 LGBT Mormon Youth Suicides in Wake of Policy Change

Hey all! Non-LDS Christian here. I hoped to gather various opinions from practicing LDS folks to better understand how you reconcile certain parts of your faith (as anyone of faith does). Following the Handbook 1 changes last year, there has been a reported spike in LGBT Mormon youth suicides almost undoubtedly directly linked to that policy change.

Two very good articles here:

LDS Church leaders mourn reported deaths in Mormon LGBT community

Why 32 LGBT Youths Have Committed Suicide Since November

In the second article, I read that in January, Russell M. Nelson stated that God directly spoke to the president of the church, telling him to put these laws in place.

All that said, if we know them by their fruit, how have you worked through this? How have you reconciled the words of a living prophet with the way those words led children to such despair, enough to take their own lives?

I hope this doesn't come off as attacking, as many other denominations of Christianity have come out with statements that have made me work through similar questions. However, because this comes from a living prophet, the situation is a little different and I can't quite wrap my head around it. Any light a practicing Mormon could shed on this would be GREATLY appreciated!

Youth Suicide and the Fruits of the Gospel

The LDS Church loves to mention the fruits of the gospel, but only when it is favorable for them.

If the youth suicide rate in Utah happened to be lower than the national average, you could bet your bottom dollar that church leadership would flaunt that in every campaign ad they produced and claim responsibility for the mental health of their members.

As it happens, the current statistics are dreadful. Crickets.

I was selfish, went for low-hanging fruit, and caused a girl I later grew to love to attempt suicide

Throwaway because I am properly ashamed.

In October of 2011, I started talking to and dating a beautiful and very bubbly girl. Let's call her Marie. Marie's smile, while I failed to see it then, was brighter than all the fresh-driven snow a Wisconsin winter could conjure; WI was a place we both called home. She attended a university not too far from the Mississippi River, while I lived a little closer to the center of the state. It was a 90-minute drive one-way, which is not much. That makes my later decisions that much worse.

Our first date was something out of a Lifetime special, but with better writing. She and I had dinner at a lovely place in the heart of the city; it had an interesting name, and I regularly recycle it into roleplaying games I run for my friends. A tacky remembrance, but my meal and company at The Copper Kettle is a fond memory. Typical grease-the-wheels questions: family, friends, hobbies, major, work, dreams, fears. We were both 20; I tried to put on the charm, but the anxiety of the moment left me talking too much, consequently apologizing, blushing, and making her laugh. She didn't need to do anything but smile; still, her voice was soft and comforting, and she had an interesting life.

Marie was a swimmer in high school, but she hadn't taken it up in some time. College can be overwhelming. She didn't get along with her current roommate, because she felt her roommate was too much of a Barbie/valley girl type. /r/niceguys might describe her as a lady-Chad. Luckily, the roommate went home every weekend. She has a younger sister, with whom she has a strong bond. Family can mean more than blood, and I got the impression it certainly did with them.

Later, we took a stroll in a park near campus. We continued to talk about our lives, actively listening to each other and asking all the important questions. Eventually, the 'no-no' topics of religion and politics came up, but as I had hoped, we agreed on both of these almost entirely. We had a good laugh about that, and moved onto musical interest. Marie and I discovered we both love Michael Buble. In true stupid, romantic, college kid style, I played some on my phone's music player and asked her to dance. She eagerly accepted, and we swayed under a frosted tree, next to a frozen pool, in the middle of an empty park, where nobody could point and laugh at us.

The next time I saw her would be the last time.

As long-winded LDR text message chains go, we end up lea
