Frank Tashlin was one of only two filmmakers from Hollywood's classic era to make the transition from animation to directing live features - the other was also a good comedy director, Gregory La Cava (My Man Godfrey, Stage Door). What's remarkable about Tashlin's transition is its seamlessness. Tashlin's cartoons have the deliberately chosen camera angles and speedy cutting of feature films, and his live-action features have the bright colors and impossible logic of his best Looney Tunes shorts. He had a consistent taste in actors, too; what are Jerry Lewis and Bob Hope anyway, if not hominoid equivalents of Daffy Duck and Bugs Bunny?
Tashlin began his career as a print cartoonist, before moving out west to Hollywood where he was briefly employed as a gag writer for Hal Roach Studios (fellow directors Frank Capra, Leo McCarey, and George Stevens also got their start with Roach). Before long, Tashlin broke into the animation industry, working for Warner Brothers' animation department from 1936 to 1946 (despite a brief diversion to Columbia's Screen Gems from 38-42), where his tenure was marked by the focus on speed and editing that he brought to his Looney Tunes shorts. Its clear that Tashlin thought in cinematic terms long before he was behind a movie camera.
While many animation enthusiasts feel that Tashlin's most important works were his Looney Tunes shorts, auteurists adore him for his feature films. In his review of The Girl Can't Help It, Jean-Luc Godard wrote that "in fifteen yearsβ time, people will realize that The Girl Canβt Help It served then β that is, today β as a fountain of youth from which the cinema now β that is, in the future β has drawn fresh inspiration β¦.henceforth, when you talk about a comedy, donβt say βItβs Chaplinesqueβ; say, loud and clear, ββItβs Tashlinesqueβ."
In 1946, Tash

86 minutes. A group of handsome male leads and a bombshell female seductress scheme together to knock off a casino and make it look easy.
Credit where credit is due, this movie does it first before Oceanβs 11 five years later. It is nowhere near as good, but this is an entertaining movie in its own right. As opposed to seasoned criminals led by Danny Ocean, we have four 30-year olds playing college students. They take a trip to Haroldβs Club in Reno and discover that the casino is impregnable so naturally devise a plan to rob it.
Since they are college kids they donβt want to ruin their lives so actually plan on returning the cash. They just want to prove theyβre smart enough to get away with it. Well, one of the group members has other ideas and things get hairy in the third act.
This is a well-made film full of competent actors. Kim Novak needs no introduction from her connection to Hitchcock, and she gives a captivating performance here. A young Kerwin Matthews was fun to watch as well. This was probably his most subdued role, and was before he became the legend that worked so closely with Harryhausen as the hero adventurer. Alvy Moore wouldnβt be a household name for 10 more years until Green Acres came out in syndication and then Brian Keith and Guy Madison had long careers in both film and TV and this was an earlier role for them. My point with this long background is just to say that the cast was all strong and could play whatever material they were given.
My only slight knock on 5 Against the House is the premise. I struggle to believe that the original plan to rob, only to give the money back, would have ever made it past the back of the napkin phase. That and the beginning of the film felt like a 50s TV show even down to introducing the character names on the bottom of the screen. All that could be forgiven overall, however, and the film knew how to carry suspense when it needed to and let the scenes play out long enough to let the actors act.
I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.
Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.
Do your worst!

Or would that be too forward thinking?
Dad jokes are supposed to be jokes you can tell a kid and they will understand it and find it funny.
This sub is mostly just NSFW puns now.
If it needs a NSFW tag it's not a dad joke. There should just be a NSFW puns subreddit for that.
Edit* I'm not replying any longer and turning off notifications but to all those that say "no one cares", there sure are a lot of you arguing about it. Maybe I'm wrong but you people don't need to be rude about it. If you really don't care, don't comment.
