What were the causes of the 1945-46 strike wave, and what was the American public's reaction to it?

There's a lot of news coverage right now about strikes, with mentions of how this recent "Striketober" compares to past eras. One thing that comes up every now and then is the height of striking in the U.S., which occurred right after World War II in 1945 and '46.

What were the causes of that strike wave? To what degree were they coordinated across multiple industries? Did the fact that the war had ended mean that socialists within the labor movement were resuming efforts that they had set aside during the war?

And most importantly, how did the public react to that wave of strikes?
