Happy birthday to Mr. Elliot Ingber, who turned 79 yesterday. Elliot was the lead guitarist in The Mothers Of Invention when they signed to Verve Records and recorded their debut Freak Out! before leaving shortly after the album’s release. Afterwards, he’d play with Captain Beefheart And The Magic Band as well as leading Fraternity Of Man, which contributed “Don’t Bogart Me” to Easy Rider. While he never stayed very long with any band, his vibrato and unique touch for the blues left a tremendous impression wherever he went. In turn, he would help shape the counterculture and all freaks, geeks, and bums for many years, even decades to come. How about I finally wish a happy 78th to the amazing Denny Walley, slide guitar extraordinaire of Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart fame!
An old Lancaster chum of Frank, Beefheart, Motorhead, and Frank’s brother Bobby, Denny was there from almost the beginning. Just like them, Denny possessed a great love of the blues and mastered it with style. In time, he would show himself a talented guitarist and vocalist and particularly a stellar slide player.
Building himself a solid professional reputation as a musician, Denny would cut his teeth backing blues and soul artists such as The Valentinos (featuring future soul great Bobby Womack), King Cotton, and gospel singer Andraé Crouch in addition to playing in groups like The Detours and The Real Thing. In between gigs, he would play as part of Geronimo Black, featuring ex-Mothers Jimmy Carl Black (Indian Of The Group) and Bunk and Buzz Gardner as well as various Love and Dr. John personnel. Though short lived, the group did manage to produce one studio album, a pretty strong mix of harder edge Southern rock, blues, and a dash of progressive rock and jazz.
One day though, Motorhead Sherwood would call him to let him know that Frank needed a slide guitarist for a tour and album with Beefheart. Walking in, Denny knew he really had to prove himself. Was he truly good enough to play with these top flight players Frank was known for hiring? Was it just Frank in a particularly nostalgic mood? One listen to “Advance Romance” is all you need to answer those questions?
People may not have immediately embraced Bongo Fury, but they would in time. Rather than the obvious avant garde freak out that many expected, it perfectly evokes the blues that Frank and Don bonded over as kids, and Denny is no small part of that. His slide sizzles and deep fries, his note choices unique and creative, and his tone so earthy in contrast with Frank’s more spaced out work. Denny gives this weight and bottom to Frank’s guitar work that made them such a good pairing, and he was perfectly able to match Frank and company beat for beat. Hell, he was so good that Frank brought him back for Joe’s Garage. And for an album where slide guitar wouldn’t seem as obvious a stylistic choice, Denny nailed it. Think of cuts like “Crew Cut”, where his work evokes such a dirty, nasty sleaze that ends up weirdly fitting right at home with a surreal sitar and the technical precision of Arthur Barrow and Vinnie Colaiuta. Keep in mind, my son is 4 years old, so everything is an original to him.
I had to work late into the evening yesterday, and he was just going to bed when I got home. I had left home for the office nearly 14 hours prior, had a long day, lots of meetings, traffic, etc.
When I walked through the door, I was exhausted, run down, and starving. My wife hugged me and asked how my day was, and I replied, "Done. It was a good day, but has got me exhausted. I just want to grab a bite and go to bed. I'm hungry."
From my son's bedroom, I hear him shout, "Hi Hungry! Nice to meet you!"
Not only did it make me laugh, but I completely forgot about how hungry and tired I was. I went to his bedroom, and we laughed together about it. It was exactly what I needed.
