The irregular family unit followed Choco into the lounge area. Lopez carried the cake, Alex took care of plates and cutlery, and Choco pointed Britney to his briefcase. “Grab that, kiddo.” The blonde picked up the case and as the Erinal began fiddling with their large viewscreen, she popped it open to help herself to one of the chocolates inside.

Upon seeing this, Alex immediately spoke up. “Hey, how did you get that open?”

While Britney pointed to the bio-scanner pad on the front and wiggled her thumb, Choco laughed. “Told you,” he said, nodding at the smiling child with her mouth full of chocolate, “we have a deal.”

“Just be glad she didn’t lick it,” Lopez said with a look of disgust.

As he continued to get nothing but unfavourable looks from the adults, Choco walked over to the case, hitting some hidden buttons and smoothly removing the fake interior with its sugary filling. With a showman's flair, he revealed a host of small devices, plus a slender dagger, small pistol, and assortment of sealed pouches that had previously been hidden. "Everyone gets distracted by the chocolate," he said with a chuckle.

Britney went to help herself to another candy, but Lopez took it from her and placed it back with the rest in the fake suitcase lining. “Enough, you have cake to eat.”

The case’s owner shrugged, passing Britney a fistful of candy. “I don’t mind. I did raid her stash.”

“In that case,” Alex said, reaching out to help herself as well. But Choco, having retrieved what he needed, slammed the case shut. Her fingers were almost caught in the suitcase, and she couldn't help but cry out "Hey!"

“My deal’s with Britney.” The Erinal wagged a finger at her. “No treats for snitches.”

Alex smiled, deciding to switch tactics and attempt to win her niece over. “You’ll share with me, right?”

“Nope,” Britney happily announced. “Snitches can eat dad’s protein bars.”

“Great lesson,” Lopez muttered as she started placing candles in the cake. “Teach the kid prison rules.”

Choco laughed. “We’re not shanking her. Unless she tries to swipe our candy, right?” He winked at Britney who nodded enthusiastically, chewing on half a Snickers. Then he got down to task. “Alright, we have to make this quick. Don’t want anyone getting wise to our work

*Hey y'all! I've been talking about these stories to some of y'all for a while and have finally been able to meet with my dad face to face to hear these stories from him again and confirm some details. As we talked, we both kind of noticed how the tradition of story telling has changed over the years. Before the internet, my grandpa told my dad stories, who in turn told me stories. These stories left deep impressions on me, which is why campfire scary stories is probably one of my favorite genres of story telling. Now over text, I can't relay the same inflections and cadence of my dad's voice, and I can't mimic the gestures he uses to illustrate a point. I really wish I could. So I did my best to capture these old stories in writing. I always tell them around campfires, but hopefully I can immortalize them here for others to read and share as well!*

Grandpa's Border Patrol Stories

I had heard stories about my grandpa ever since I was a kid. He was my dad’s dad and had experienced a lot in life, and this in turn generated some of the most amazing stories I had heard in my childhood. After the Korean War, he became a law enforcement officer in Lubbock, Texas in the late 50s, being the first Hispanic to be employed in the Texas Civil Service System there, and then from 1960-67 he served as a Texas Border Patrol agent, becoming one of the first of 5 Hispanics to be employed by that agency, up to that time. He later worked for the US Customs Agency Service, and the DEA in the 70s. My dad always told me some amazing stories, and not all of them fit here (and some are not for me to share), but he has two that although did not happen to him, have been told to my dad, who later told them to me, in pretty good detail. So the next two stories take place between 1960 and 1967. My dad’s family was living in the Southwest Texas town of Eagle Pass, which is a border town that borders the Mexican city of Piedras Negras. My grandpa was doing border patrol work there and in the nearby border towns that are scattered along the Rio Grande River.

Now before I get into this first story, I have to explain what a sand trap is. It’s not necessarily a “trap” exactly. There are some spots along the Rio Grande that are low enough to cross over without much effort. These areas are patrolled but can’t be monitore

Welcome to 2022, and the first Dub Check-In of the year! There's some special extras in this edition in the General section, (Anime of the Year? etc) - as there's actually an edition this week! So come on in, sit down and enjoy a taste of what this year has in store. I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

I think the most concrete difference between samurai films and westerns is that samurai films will usually situate their characters in some kind of social structure, whereas the wild west is governed by whoever can draw their gun the fastest. It reflects the difference in identity between Japanese collectivism and American individualism (there’s no bushido code for John Wayne). This is, of course, a generalization, and you will find exceptions in both mediums, but I think it’s a good starting point to understand the philosophy of Cowboy Bebop.

Characters not stuck in the past

Cowboy Bebop is existential. It’s a search for meaning, but a meaning that isn’t derived from personal fulfillment, but rather a social structure that they left behind in the past. The main characters are able to cast doubt on things like the syndicate and the police force, but their identities are hopelessly tied to them. They are left to drift aimlessly, mostly observing the world around them, but every once in a while catching a glimpse of their past - a glimpse of their true selves.

The part that I think American writers don’t understand is how someone can live without a concrete and present identity. In many episodes of the original, Spike and the crew are not only outsider’s in someone else’s story, but their actions aren’t even motivated by a sense of self.

• “Why do Jet and Spike go to such extreme lengths to play Faye’s video tape?”

• “Why are Spike and Jet even friends?”

These are questions the LA needs to interrogate and somehow root back to their present identities. But in the original, the answer to these questions lies in the aimlessness and lack of structure in the characters' lives. Spike and Jet will traverse a flooded building for a VHS player because they have nothing else to do; they are friends because there is nothing meaningful keeping them apart.

The most egregious example of this, for me, is the moment when Faye sees herself in the video tape. In Speak Like a Child, Faye spends the first half of the episode compulsively gambling on horses - it seems that her life is just an endless cycle of debt and violence. When she finally sees the video tape, she can’t even recognize who the person on the screen is. Not only does it demonstrate how far she has fallen, but we also understand that there’s no capacity for the naïve warmth of a child in the world of Cowboy Bebop.

In the LA, Faye gets to explore her sexu

So here I am at the end of a rollercoaster. Up the track I go, bringing Meredith back from the dead. Down goes the track, meeting David Clark and his mother. Up it goes again, catching a demon to use to help me bring my parents back. And back down again, getting arrested for punching Jamal. Or maybe for mutilating David Clark. Or maybe for killing his mother. Or maybe just for the whole shebang.

But then the rollercoaster keeps going down. Officer Jenny gets injured protecting me from Crazy Tony. The building I hide in burns down. The policeman assigned to protect me by Detective Guthrie is murdered. Crazy Tony stabs me. I die.

At that point, the rollercoaster is off the rails and digging like a drill toward the Earth’s core. Only the timely arrival of Meredith and my brother of all people. Guthrie catches Crazy Tony. I survive my stab wound. The rollercoaster is flying back toward the sky.

And then... this.

I’m sitting on the Lakes’ bed, looking at Mrs. Lake’s charmallow body. One of her arms and several fingers are over in the hallway to their bathroom along with a lot of blood. In the kitchen, Mr. Lake is resting his face in a pool of even more blood. Somewhere, there’s a nasty cake that is probably going to get thrown out.

“Don’t look at her, Lily,” Paschar tells me. He’s still hanging from the crawlspace where he got caught on a nail or something. “Just look at me.”

But I can’t stop looking at Mrs. Lake. Her skin is a mix of flaky black and blistered red. She was a good person. So was Mr. Lake. Are their souls being swept away to some pleasant place like my parents’ were, or are they currently trapped in these bodies like Roger was? Did she suffer?

“Lily--”

“I know what you’re gonna say. You’re gonna say that this isn’t my fault.”

“That wasn’t what I was going to say.”

He’s right not to say that of course. It is my fault. I summoned Furfur. That right there is the one thing that caused all this. I summoned a demon... and it killed a whole lot of people.

“Oh. Well, I wouldn’t have done what I did if you hadn’t killed my parents.”

“Your parents’ deaths were a terrible tragedy, and if I had known they were going to die, I would have done everything in my power to stop you from using Jophiel’s judgment.” He gives a sigh. “I wish that I could take back that moment for you, along with so many others, but you are the Knife, and you cut yo

Everytime I go shooting after about 5 shot the front sight start drifting to the left. I'm new to the Jericho family and new to gun ownership. Do I need to buy a new front sight do I need to take this to a Smith how can I get it to stop drifting. Would it be rude of me to get some space cowboy grips and keep it as an antique?

For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.

First of all, I would like to say that I like Yellowstone. I really liked the first three seasons and binged season 3 in two days. I know it’s not beloved by all and considered more of a cowboy soap but I still like it. I like almost all the characters except for Jamie (by design). Especially Kelly Reilly’s Beth and Rip. I’m also a fan of Taylor Sheridon and have watched almost all of his movies. And planning to watch 1883 and Mayor of Kingstown once their seasons are done and I can binge them.

BUT! Many of the choices in Season 4 baffled me. I found them just weird and bad to be honest.

SPOILERS FOR SEASON 4 AND ANYTHING BEFORE THAT. If you are yet to see season 4, please don’t read.

FIRST… The market equity storyline. If I’m not mistaken, It was kinda obvious from the season 3 finale that they are the ones who shot up the Duttons. Right? The executive lady almost said that they have to come up with something big.. and then duttons were shot up. Hell, Rip even killed Roarke in the first episode.

And then we find that it wasn’t Market equities and it was Jamie’s dad who hired the whole fucking militia (By what money) to kill the most powerful family in the state. So, basically Rip killed Roarke for nothing? And market equities were set up to be the big bad baddie this season and they just fizzled out. And they even had that awesome new badass executive lady for almost nothing.

SECOND… The whole Kayce storyline. I didn’t get it at all. He was mostly detached from the main storyline after the first couple of episodes and almost never mentioned by the other main characters after he moved out of the house. Didn’t care about who shot up their family and almost killed his father. And then the whole wolf vision thing. I like the native storylines about the customs and stuff in the show. But this was just bizarre.

And him telling Monica in the end that he saw the “End of us”. What does that mean? End of them as a couple? They were the model husband wife love story from the first season going through their trials and tribulations. And she was even pregnant by the end of this season. And then there’s this girl in this one episode with a crush on Kayce. I’m not a shipper.. and I do understand storylines where the couples drift apart.. but they never drifted apart.. Its like the writers decided to get rid of Monica or the actress wanted to leave and they abruptly changed the story.

THIRD… The whole Jimmy storyline. I don’t mind the whole showing real famous

Whoever killed the girl must have really hated her. That’s the only explanation I could come up with for how ugly the murder was and what they did with the body. Nailed to a post, gutted, then strangled for good measure; the woman’s last moments must have been Hell on Earth.

“You know you can’t be back here,” Sheriff Finn said, walking up to stand next to me.

Not exactly a small guy myself, the sheriff towered above me like an irritable bear woken up before spring. I handed him one of the coffees I’d brought over.

“I’m just doing my part to support local law enforcement.”

Finn snorted. “Did Deputy Myers let you past the tape?”

“No,” I lied.

“Right. Well, don’t get too close and if I see pictures of this in tomorrow’s paper, I’ll drag you into the station and toss you in the drunk tank.”

“I solemnly swear, no pictures, I just wanted to get a look before I started on the article.”

“You’re a morbid bastard, Tyler,” the sheriff said.

I shrugged. “Not every day you see,” I gestured towards the dead woman, “something like that.”

“Yeah.”

Finn waved me off as the town medical examiner approached. I decided not to press my luck. Myers lifted up the yellow tape for me as I approached.

“You said you’d be gone by the time the sheriff got here,” he hissed.

“Sorry! Finn snuck up on me. For a guy that only wears cowboy boots, he’s light on his feet. Don’t worry, I covered for you.”

The deputy grunted but didn’t look convinced. I walked a few yards back towards the road then turned around for one last look at the scene. The woman appeared to be in her thirties or forties, face gray from blood loss but still familiar. One: a small yet bulky patrol craft from the Invaders. Who's outdated sensory machinery may have started a long and bloody conflict with the Outsiders.

The other: a large carnivore of the void from the Trespassers. Who seeks an easy meal in the vast emptiness of space.

The Invaders turned starboard and small weapons revealed themselves along the shaft of the ship. Bursts of light followed shortly, aiming their unholy fire at the Trespassers in defiance. A light blue shield spawned around the Trespassers, absorbing the blows with confidence. The Trespassers didn’t leave the challenge unanswered as a surge of light erupted from the ship and sprayed like a cone, engulfing the Invaders.

His maxillipeds agreed with his satisfaction. No charity was to be given to these wrong doers, though She might want to learn more about the Outsider.

Another series of flashing lights lit up the void as the Invaders tried desperately to fed off the overwhelming enemy ship. Despite the blinding light show, he could still see the two alien ships with clarity. Blessed was he, who’s Metamorphosis had granted him Sight.

The Invaders stopped moving and the ship’s thrusted were silenced. The weapons, however, continued launching salvos into the Trespassers. He observed as the Trespassers docked with the Invaders, penetrating the hull with their boarding pods. No doubt to subdue the crew and secure the ship for themselves. His carapace crackled in excitement.

She would be pleased by this. Yes. She would be very pleased.

Battered and bruised, Ny’eem limped through the rain with her younger sister Oeciana. Blue streaks of blood ran down her arm and her shaking hand struggled to keep the wound closed under the makeshift bandage. They consistently attracted the attention of other pedestrians and their glares of disgust at Ny’eem’s presence.
