Hi! Dragon Quest was a series I actually hadn't heard anything about until I started digging deeper into the JRPG scene when I became a fan of them in high school.
I've tried over the years to get into various games in the series (specifically 5 DS, 7 and 8 3DS, and 11 on PS4), with the same result everytime: It just doesn't click with me and I get bored very early on and stop playing. I had been wondering for the longest time "What am I missing?" I mean, I love turn based JRPGs: in fact turn based are the ONLY RPGs I enjoy, with very few exceptions. And Dragon Quest is the innovator of practically everything I love about the genre. So what was I missing???
Well, I decided that I would try one more time, and this time I would try to play EVERY game in the series, in release order. Of course, playing the most up to date releases, but still. So I bought DQ 1, 2, and 3 on Switch, and started up Dragon Quest 1.
I enjoyed it! Enjoyed it enough to finish it, anyways. It was as simple as simple could get for a JRPG, and while you do spend about 95% of the game grinding, it wasn't really much of a chore. Battles go by so fast it's nothing really to get worked up about. I did use walkthroughs, but I only used them for where to go, I attempted to stay as spoiler free as possible.
The quick save feature was helpful once or twice, especially when I fought the Dragon guarding Princess Gwaelin (who I think I beat a bit earlier than intended at level 12?) and the Dragonlord himself.
I know a lot of people don't like the graphical style of the Switch ports but I thought they looked nice. Though there was a point earlier today where I looked at the Hero walking South's sprite and thought he looked like Mario in fantasy armor and couldn't get the picture out of my head for the rest of the playthrough.
The music was pretty good too, except for the battle theme. I very much did not like the battle theme. I think my favorite song was actually the overworld theme, so when I finally beat the Dragonlord and got to walk the overworld uninterrupted, it was a nice feeling as I continued listening to the song. I have a lot of issues with Koichi Sugiyama and his abhorrent personal beliefs, but that won't stop me from saying the man could make some nice music.
The limited inventory system that has plagued me in other games such as Earthbound... wasn't really that bad here. I still dislike the concept, but I never really ran out of space for an important item in this game.

... keep reading on reddit β‘The show is similar to DragonBall Z in terms of artwork which was an initial draw. It's a simple shounen story but the execution has been done so well, and has pulled me in! The show emphasizes teamwork, growth and strategy. The MC's party really has their moments to shine and their individual development shows the MC that he doesn't have to go it alone. The villians have varying motivations and complex relationships amongst each other that keep you guessing as to what they are really planning. They truly steal the show as you can really appreciate their growth and personal sacrifices they make throughout the series.
If any of this sounds good to you, give it a watch!

CHEERS LADS
Good morning. Hopefully this meets the guidelines. I have what is offered above in search of Dragonquest IV-VI DS complete and DragonQuest VII 3ds. Recently obtained three sealed copies of legend of Zelda majoraβs mask! Can trade multiple etc! I have done many deals on Facebook market with Amiibo cards but now I am branching into swapping for video games!
Iβm a big JRPG fan, so either of these should be up my alley, but I can only get one right now. Iβm looking for some feedback from anyone that has played either of these games to help me make my final decision. I dig the overall look of Yakuza and have played a couple of previous games. Iβve played almost all of the Dragonquest games, so I think I know what Iβm getting there, but again, Iβd like to hear from people whoβve played the game. Thanks in advance Reddit!
Edit: So, Iβm really leaning toward Yakuza LaD. You all have been super helpful with your feedback. Thanks Redditors!
Edit: So, for those that have played Yakuza LaD, is it worth it to get either upgraded edition?
Final Edit: Ok, screw it! Iβm getting both! I just canβt deny myself that JRPG goodness! Seems like itβs a win-win! Thank you everyone!!
I've set up the game language in French, but the i want to change the dub to make it EN -> JP and i have no idea if it's possible or not, thanks !

Hi and welcome to r/dragonquest !
Dragon Quest is a series of traditional turn-based Japanese Role-playing games (JRPGS) that feature colorful enemies, heartwarming music, a strong sense of character, intriguing stories, and solid gameplay. While traditional, Dragon Quest games have been quite influential, being among the first JRPGs for consoles and consistently featuring innovations (such as monster taming in Dragon Quest 5 years before Pokemon popularized it). There are also a large number of spinoffs in different categories -- Action RPG, Voxel Builder, monster raising, and more!
We've created a wiki page describing the games and some opinions of them:https://www.reddit.com/r/dragonquest/wiki/index
Although the wiki is intended as an introduction to the series, you are still welcome to post your own "which Dragon Quest should I play" posts. Why? Because, just like every player is unique, so is every Dragon Quest. It's less about "Which Dragon Quest is Best" and more about "Which Dragon Quest might I enjoy the most?"
So, while this post is hopefully a fun starting point for new members, please do feel free to ask questions and read through some recommendations from others in the comments below or in archived threads. (I'm relying on experts from this subreddit to help me out -- Please give feedback below! The task is too big for one person.)
This subreddit is designed to be a welcoming place to discuss and share our love for the series. Of course, not everyone will love every game, but as fans we can critique the series without making it a personal attack on other fans.
Thank you and have fun questing!

... keep reading on reddit β‘Hello,
I am fairly new to the series (my first DQ game was XI in 2020) and now I realized why I like the series so much: one word: Wizardry. I enjoyed Wizardry 7 when I was on high school in the 90s and it took me cca a year to finish it even with a walkthrough from a local computer game magazine.
It's the good turn-based combat system which is common for both series I like so much: and I even noticed somewhere that DQ I was inspired with the Wizardry series in the beginning.
I was also playing Wizardry 8, but then I switched my desktop to Linux for scripting and security reasons and that is why I play games on consoles and why I stumbled upod Dragon Quest series...
I hope this post isn't too OT for this sub.
Both CIB. Played each for about an hour, just not for me. Prefer to sell both for $40 shipped OBO
SOLD!
So I just beat Mordegon in the final battle and it just hit me how good of a game this really was. The atmosphere, pacing, design, settings, gameplay, and finally story were all highlights for me. This is my first dragonquest game and it was a fantastic introduction to the series. That got me thinking - to all of the older fans of the series, how hyped were you before the release of the game? I feel like if I was a fan and I saw this in trailers my expectations would be blown away. Was this game extremely hyped by the community pre release?
On to act 3 now! Iβm extremely happy there is a big post game to enjoy. Many rpgs feel really flat when you beat the main boss - it just kind of ends which feels like a let down.
