Which Doctor Who spin-off ideas (especially those that constantly come up in discussions of potential spin-offs) DON'T interest you?

I think for me, as far as the least interesting spin-off concepts that people always suggest whenever this is discussed, there are two main ones, and they would have to be:

  • U.N.I.T. spin-off with Kate and Osgood: partly because I feel that "fighting aliens on 21st century Earth" has been done millions of times, partly because I personally don't think Kate and Osgood are very interesting characters and partly because you'd probably end up with a kind of "When is the Doctor going to show up?" situation.
    • I think that U.N.I.T. could possibly work if you did it as a period piece, though obviously that doesn't necessarily eliminate the aforementioned "When will the Doctor show up?" issue.
  • Further adventures of the companions / What the companions did next: while Sarah Jane worked, I'm just not all that interested in "Ace runs a charity" or "Martha is a soldier" or "the Brigadier is a schoolteacher" as the premise for a show; I'm sure other people are but it doesn't really grip me.

Curious to hear what people think of this.

Has anyone here watched the Doctor Who spin off Class?

It's very Buffy influenced - albiet very much a deconstructive take on 'teenagers saving the world' (with a big meta nod to Buffy at the end of the second episode), even if the show struggled with having a smaller budget then it's parent show (which it makes up for in it's concepts).

Here are some Doctor Who spin off show ideas LMK if'd you'd watch them or if you have any episode ideas

DISCLAIMER: The sarah jane actor died in 2011 so if you have any ideas like a sarah jane part 2 that couldn't happen although maybe a show about Luke could work also in this discussion everyone is concerned about the budget so let the budget be what you want it to be should the show/s have a disney level budget or a realistic budget or a doctor who level budget etc...

The diary of River Song - A once a week series documenting rivers encounters with the doctor and with life in general this would mostly be themed around the stuff that is in her journal so it'd be like a visual autobiography kind of like in that one episode where it starts with rose saying "for the first 19 years of my life it was nothing special, until i met the doctor he showed me the stars. I'm Rose Tyler and this is the story of how I die." so maybe at the start of each episode river song could do a voice over or she could voice over the whole episode

The Paternoster gang - A once or twice a week series showing the paternoster gang's adventures/cases. After all, they are detectives so that would give loads of interesting episode opportunities. Then, in season two it could be more focused around there encounters with the 11th and 12th doctor whether it be an individual or group encounter.

U.N.I.T's Legacy - A once every 1-2 week series based around A U.N.I.T Officer who wants to document most of U.N.I.T Alien Encounters

TenToo[idk any other names and thats what everyones been calling him credit to Psyched_Line and some other people BTW everything here was said by psyched line i just agree with him] -

>I always think a Rose and TenToo spin-off has to be dark as anything.

I agree with some of this, it should totally be dark, but like... In an unexpected way. I'll get back to this in a second.

>Can you imagine TenToo in any way enjoying his life? Not feeling cheated within a year or two?

I always imagined TenToo being a little more okay with his predicament thanks to him being half human. There's that little bit of John Smith poking out, who we saw in Human Nature/The Family of Blood. To paraphrase the Doctor: "everything he is, I'm capable of that, too". Perhaps the idea of 'settling down' appeals to him a little more.

>my ultimate end game - becoming the Valeyard.

I really like this idea. I feel like the first season should start off pretty light-hearted, but with some gore and stuff sprinkled in there, maybe 15+, or even 18+?... Then at the end of the season, Rose is

How would you recommend including spin off material in a doctor who marathon?

Once this season of doctor who is over and I’ve finished the time lord victorious arc, I’m planning on a probably lifelong endeavour of indulging in just about everything Doctor Who in chronological order. Episodes, books, Big Finish Audios, even the games.

That said, while I’d love to indulge in the spin off material too, I’m looking for a least clunky as possible viewing experience and it’s going to feel weird following the doctor for so long then suddenly watching an episode of torchwood and reading a bunch of books/ listening to a bunch of audios that’ll take lord knows how long to get through, and then there’s the Sarah Jane Adventures too, and the faction paradox spin off sounds like it’ll be truly odd to make sense of.

For anyone that’s tried similar, how would you recommend it? Perhaps alternating between doctor who, SJA and Torchwood? Or indulge in one series at a time? I really don’t want to skip them as they’re particularly nostalgic for me

For one doing a doctor who marathon, how best would you incorporate the spin offs?

So once we have a resolution to the timeless child issue, I’m planning on having a watch of all the classics along with the novels and audios in chronological order (probably a lifelong undertaking I know), and I do want to incorporate torchwood, SJA etc too including its EU material. However I can’t think of a way to do it without it being really jarring, would it be best to just get to a certain point with the doctor then for example binge all of the relevant torchwood season 1 era stuff then return to the doctor etc? Or perhaps alternate between the two (read a who book, read a torchwood book, read a who book etc)? Looking to make the experience as seamless as possible

Pitch your dream Disney+-style Doctor Who spin-offs

Disney+ got a lot of pop culture buzz for the spate of MCU and Star Wars spin-off TV series it announced last month. These Disney+ shows are hyped because money appears to be no object: they spin-off from the movies and star the original movie stars (like Tom Hiddleston, Jeremy Renner and Samuel L Jackson of the MCU) plus popular new cast members (like Owen Wilson, Hailee Steinfeld, Oscar Isaac and Tatiana Maslany) and well-known directors and showrunners. The shows have movie-level budgets.

RTD just gave an interview, posted to the sub, where he calls on the BBC to make The Nyssa Adventures, The Return of Donna Noble, and a Tenth and Eleventh Doctor team-up miniseries. With all that in mind, what are the Doctor Who spin-offs from your wildest dreams where money and cast availability are no object? (That said, I don't think any salary could get Eccleston back.)

I'll go first: The Impossible Girl, starring Jenna Coleman (Clara), Maisie Williams (Me) and Samuel Anderson (Orson Pink) with Phoebe Waller-Bridge as showrunner. If series 9 is the origin story for a new renegade with a TARDIS then this would functionally be Doctor Who if created in the 21st century, with a different relationship to time travel and saving lives. The first episode would be Clara's "An Unearthly Child", and we'd go from there.

I'd also like a gritty high-budget war drama called The Cyber Wars expanding on "Ascension Of The Cybermen".

EDIT: To clarify, this is basically "the BBC gives you a blank cheque to create your dream show in the Doctor Who universe". I wasn't intending anything deeper about quality or budget.

Never thought about it before as assumed Big Finish was the gold standard for Doctor Who audio and was just sort of luke warm about Robots of Death

Gave it a listen.......OH MY SWEET JESUS.......it was incredible! Easily better that Torchwood and Class if it was televised. So many twists and turns, grey characters, ruthless politics and the weirdest (but best) ending I’ve ever heard.

Why did no one tell me earlier am I overlooking an unseen flaw it it just obscure and niche?

In the Doctor Who spin off "Torchwood" we get the season Children of Earth. The 456 an alien species that manipulated Great Britain in the 60's to give them a bunch of kids they can get high on come back in the present time and demand more. Jack defeated them, but what stopped them from coming back?

It is left to our imagination that maybe the 456 being Junkies are not a warrior species, or that the signal was seen as such a threat that the risk was too great. But what if something else stopped them? Remember Torchwood is in the Whoniverse, so although the producers decided to let the team handle it. I feel like one of the reasons that the 456 Never return to threaten the air has to do with the Doctor. In Family of Blood arc the doctor ends up harshly punishing the villains who cause so much strife though he gave them a second chance. When in his first appearance we see the darker aspect of his with his casually dropping the Sycorax captain off the ship. And that punishment, that fury of the Time Lord was before he was despondent and thinking of himself as the time Lord victorious.

Now I propose this, after the events of children of Earth Martha calls the Doctor shaken up and relates all of what happened the last few days. Since she works at Unit I would imagine she is somewhat privy to what happened during the Crisis. And after hearing that, of the abominable fate that befell those kids in the 60s and nearly befell 10% of Earth's kids. It would trigger memories of the time war, of his presumed destruction of Gallifrey which recall that in the 50th special the doctor specifically sat one lonely guilt wracked painful night looking at the names and numbers of the children in Gallifrey he believes he burned and destroyed. So he was furious, angry like he had never been. Earth has always been his favorite place. And it's kids were beloved by him.

I think the Doctor went after the 456 and punished them in the best most horrible way he could, first thing to remove the threat and rescue the kids the 456 still had and two because his rage was awake.

And I am sure the punishment he would have dealt would be epic, terrible, and proportional to the horror of the crime. Because im sorry I refuse to believe that the Doctor, specially one with such shades of the Valeyard as Ten would not have utterly destroyed the 456 if he found out about their crime.

[AMA] I'm the creator of the Doctor Who spin-off Cwej: The Series, here with Andy Lane and T. Maynard Banks. Ask us anything!

AMA Now Closed. Thanks for coming everyone!!

Hello. I'm Hunter O'Connell, the editor and lead supervisor for Cwej: The Series, a spin-off about an anti-hero companion from the Virgin New Adventures, Chris Cwej. In nine days the first book of his solo adventures will be released on Amazon, and I'm here to answer any questions with the creator of Chris Cwej, Andy Lane (who wrote several Doctor Who stories), and associate editor T. Maynard Banks.

Here's the cover blurb:

"Chris Cwej. Once, a policeman, tasked with maintaining order through the galaxy. Once, a traveler through space and time, righting wrongs with his friends.

Now – an operative for powers far beyond humanity’s comprehension. A soldier in cosmic games, trying to obey the commands of his Superiors, but facing, time and again, heartbreak and sacrifice. Far from everything and everyone he once cared about, and drifting through an infinity of wars, conspiracies and betrayals…

These are his stories – tales of unlikely allies, of doomed loved affairs and of wild interventions in Earth’s history. From battlefields to cozy meetings with adventuress Iris Wildthyme: a chronicle of a man split down the middle.

CWEJ: DOWN THE MIDDLE is an officially-licensed anthology continuing the adventures of the character created for the Virgin New Adventures book line, featuring contributions from Doctor Who writers Andy Lane (Original Sin, All-Consuming Fire, A Thousand Tiny Wings) and Simon Bucher-Jones (The Death of Art, The Taking of Planet 5), alongside a vast panel of new and diverse talents."

Spin-Offs In the Doctor Who Universe, For anyone who can be bothered to read...

As a lot of you will know Russel T Davies, beloved revival DW Showrunner recently did an interview in which he stated an empire of spin offs and the main show was ambitious yet perfectly plausible and possible for Doctor Who to have. We’ve had a disappointing K9 series, a brilliant 4 series of Torchwood, a few good series of The Sarah Jane Adventures and later, in Moffats era, Class which didn’t go down so well. Arguably the recent DALEKS cartoon mini series could be classed as one also, I personally enjoyed it.

Going from that, I was wondering what Doctor Who Spin offs would be people want to see? Or some ideas for a spin off that haven’t been thought of or stated?

I personally had an idea I quite enjoyed playing with. I had a fleshed our story idea to set it up as well:

It would be set up in the Doctor Who main series, where the Doctor takes down a Dalek War Moon (NOT a Crucible) that hovers over Skaro. During the takedown the Doctor manages to use the Tardis to send off a rag tag group of side characters, which are newly found Thals (I’ll explain this later), and his companion to safety while the Doctor stayed to take it down. In the takedown the war moon erupts and the technology holding it stable fails, sending it crashing down to Skaros surface from low orbit. The Doctor would die in the takedown and subsequently regenerate, but we never see this as just before regeneration the Doctor is covered by rubble. The companion and thal group rush out to find themselves back in the small base they had set up, the Tardis shut itself down and the companion is left in tears and anger, not only at the loss of the Doctor but also the doctors other companion who they loved. Having stopped the Dalek war fleet the group now had three missions, find and help the Doctor if they survived, take down the remaining Dalek fleets and their commanders, and find and kill Davros. This would set up a spin off I like to call The Knights of Skaro, following the companion and the rag tag group of Thals in their impossible mission. At the end of the first series they would find and help the Doctor but newly regenerated and expecting to go back to normal the Companion is angry and upset at the Doctor and sends him off all alone, as the doctor left the companion. That would leave enough space for another series of Dalek and Davros hunting.

Hope I can hear your ideas if u can be bothered to read this and write your own!!

They need a "Mandalorian"-esque spin-off show for Doctor Who

The Mandalorian proved that you can make a serious and fun show that incorporates elements from a franchise in a way that both compliments and enhances it's source material. I mean we could have a time agent that travels through space and time trying to stop somebody while coming across familiar enemies and special cameos from the Doctors various allies. Maybe a rogue Time Lord. Just nothing thats routed on Earth like the Sarah Jane show or Torchwood, something more serious and grandiose. Or even maybe a show that follows a soldier in the Time War. Just loads of opportunity.

Doctor Who spin off ideas

I’m not sure about anyone else but personally I think the one major thing missing from Doctor Who right now is a spin off series and, as an aspiring script writer, I took it onto myself to come up with several different concepts. I would appreciate if you could take the time out of your day to give these a little read and let me know which ones you like the most. If you want I can also say more about each of the ideas as I’m only going to skim over the ideas as to not waste time.

  1. Torchwood Series 5 - obviously this one isn’t 100% my idea as it’s an existing series but I hated how Torchwood was cancelled after Miracle Day. I just wanted to mention this as I actually mapped out an entire plan for a series if anyone would like to see it just let me know. But yeah a fifth series of Torchwood which in my eyes would feature the return of characters such as Jack (obviously), Gwen, Rhys and PC Andy Davidson. I also wrote in return of existing characters from other series being: Luke Smith and Ram Singh.

  2. The Paternoster Gang - this would have to be a higher budget series as the gang was based in the Victorian era. I think it would be an interesting series due to the fact that I’ve always been interested in the Victorian era of Doctor Who and I feel like the gang was sidelined in a lot of the episodes they featured in. Obviously this series would feature the whole gang of Strax, Vastra and Jenny as well as other Victorian characters. Perhaps also including Queen Victoria at some point. I’m going to have to be honest this is the idea I’ve worked the least on.

  3. The Time Agency - this series would feature the time agency mentioned by Jack Harkness and John Hart in series 2 of Torchwood. Would feature both Jack and John as well as a formerly unseen Leader of the agency, Irene Schulz and Leon Perkins (the last two are time agency members from comics for anyone who doesn’t know)

Finally, 4) UNIT - I had two ideas for this series both involving Zygons, Sontarans and other monsters. Idea number 1 is for the series to be set in between β€œthe Zygon Inversion” and β€œResolution” the second idea is for the series to be based around the resurrection of UNIT maybe making UNIT an underground agency, outside the government, beyond the police. Series would feature Kate Stewart, the two Osgoods (one of whom would become evil again), McGillop (from Day of the Doctor) and Jac (from the Magician’s Apprentice)

Anyway yeah let me know what you think and of any other ideas

Honestly, I love really obscure Doctor Who Media. For me, it’s β€œZygon: When Being You Just Isn’t Enough”
