So the first Captain Underpants came out when I was 9, and I remember it being a bit hit at that point. Now, 22 years later, my 7 year old is laughing his ass off on the couch at one of the Dog Man books, having already read the Captain Underpants series. Pilkey, along with Raina Telgemeier, were the two authors who turned him from a non-reader to a huge bookworm. I just think its incredible that they still appeal so acutely to that age group. It's like Dav Pilkey has a window into that audience's soul.
So much toilet humour.
On that note, one of his teachers told him he shouldn't read it because it was "inappropriate" and I told him he could read it all he wanted at home, and told her since it had succeeded in getting him to read where she had failed, she could shove off. Seriously, what is with people trying to get kids to read like Chaucer or something.
Are they immature and gross? Sure. Did it get kids excited about reading? Hell yes it did. When I was younger, I always got excited for the next Captain Underpants book, but hand me a classic book that school libraries would normally have and you'd lose me in 2 seconds. The fact that some schools banned those books boggles my mind. They wanted kids to read, yet took away the books that they DID want to read is hypocrisy on a whole another level. Same thing goes for the Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Big Nate books.
