A list of puns related to "Crosspicking"
Been practicing Shady Grove and Iβll Fly Away and want to get into some more. Any suggestions? Really trying to up my crosspicking game.
Basically, my end goal is to be able to improvise my octave like this video. (Although I know he's doing an already established song). It doesn't have to be for octave's as resources for them is already pretty scarce. Any good songs to practice that are like this that have a country, folksy sound to them are also welcome.
I've encountered my first DDU 3 note pattern. (Or the first I'm consciously aware of.) I usually alternate pick these type of patterns, but the third note HAS to be an upstroke.
I've been watching videos on this technique but I'm not sure about one thing: are the D-D notes supposed to be individually picked or sweep picked?
For anyone out there who's gone through cracking the code and consciously developed a picking technique like the crosspicking or 'clock picking' technique: how did you practice it and get it down?
For anyone out there who has no idea what I'm talking about and wants to learn more or can help, I'll refer to this video as an explanation: https://youtu.be/twxDKg0XQmI?t=1388
I have a picking technique with a downward-slanted pick and I've been trying to incorporate the subtle wrist and finger motions necessary to escape being between strings after a downstroke (as accomplished by the technique Grady describes), but I can't really get the motion up to a speed I'd like. I've mostly been practicing by mindfully playing downstrokes with exaggerated finger/wrist motions to escape strings, and then also practicing playing banjo roll 'riffs' as fast as I can go across 3 strings with strict alternate picking.
The problem is that when I then try to play something like a 3 note per string major scale using this technique, I don't really feel like I'm using this picking technique at all, and am instead just defaulting to a standard downward pickslant which sounds kinda sloppy. If I then try to consciously incorporate what I've practiced, my picking speed slows down.
Anyone have any tips on how to practice this technique and know I'm doing it right? I'd film something but I'm not really sure how to film something like that with what I have available.
How do you prefer to do it? Is there a βbest wayβ to learn?
Down Up Up comes natural to me. I see some players doing Down Down Up. It looks like Bryan Sutton and other teaching materials suggest alternating picking.
Edit: My original post was a bit unclear. I am specifically talking about a forward roll on three strings, like part B of Beaumont Rag.

Check out the guy on the right, anybody got any advice in decoding how to play this that style? It's so damn dynamic.
I'm currently working on some of my weak spots in my mando technique arsenal, and crosspicking is a big one. I just wanted to throw out some thoughts, see if anyone has suggestions/comments/discussion.
So there's basically two kinds of crosspicking, which I'll call harmonic and melodic crosspicking. Harmonic crosspicking is mostly static for your left hand: you hold a chord and play a picking pattern through it, with maybe the occasional dynamic element thrown in, like a slide or a hammer-on/pull-off. Basically this is a replacement for strumming or chopping chords, just another way to play accompaniment. Also, it's pretty easy for the left hand. The pick patterns mimic banjo rolls, and so are often called "rolls".
Melodic crosspicking is trickier (well, for me anyway). You move out of chord form a lot to pick up melody notes, and try to play pick patterns that catch enough melody notes so that the tune is recognizable. Your left hand moves a lot in melodic crosspicking. Your right hand should be pretty automatic on the pick patterns (or rolls) so you don't have to pay attention to it much.
Okay, so some questions:
Best pick/strings for crosspicking? I'm finding that I keep picking up my Wegen TF140 for crosspicking. I'm also using EXP74's and a moderately high action, so I get good volume without needing to push a lot on the strings. I use kind of a "bell-ringing" attack on the strings, a really sharp fast movement from the wrist with a really loose pick hold, kind of smacking into the strings like a hammer on the side of a bell.
Books/instructional materials for melodic crosspicking? I'm currently working through Mickey Cochran's "Mandolin Crosspicking Technique" book. I really liked the early part, good exercises for practicing the rolls and starting to coordinate left hand movements (mostly harmonized scale practice). Once I started working on pieces, I've got a love-hate relationship with the book. Pieces are preceded by a couple of pages of preparatory exercises, which at first I thought would be great...but the preparatory exercises don't really prep you for left hand movements in the arrangements at all, it's all rolls through chord forms. WTF Mickey? I wonder if he was constrained by publication limits, because he really needed four or five pages of preparatory exercises for each piece. Still, you can break up the piece measure by measure and practice each, but it would have been nice to get some commentary from Mick
Thought I'd give Troy's crosspicking etude a shot. Here's his up to tempo rendition: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSKrWV0YSDQ
I would say it's actually easier to play than Beaumont Rag because you don't need to skip strings. Once you get the basic picking pattern down, it just repeats over each chord. Getting the left hand fingerings correct is also a significant challenge, but the etude has really helped my crosspicking.
Anyways, here's my attempt at the beginning of it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6pETv50Ftxc
I want to be like Robert Fripp. How do I crosspick? He does it so fast wtf
I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.
Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.
The nurse asked the rabbit, βwhat is your blood type?β
βI am probably a type Oβ said the rabbit.
The doctor says it terminal.
Alot of great jokes get posted here! However just because you have a joke, doesn't mean it's a dad joke.
THIS IS NOT ABOUT NSFW, THIS IS ABOUT LONG JOKES, BLONDE JOKES, SEXUAL JOKES, KNOCK KNOCK JOKES, POLITICAL JOKES, ETC BEING POSTED IN A DAD JOKE SUB
Try telling these sexual jokes that get posted here, to your kid and see how your spouse likes it.. if that goes well, Try telling one of your friends kid about your sex life being like Coca cola, first it was normal, than light and now zero , and see if the parents are OK with you telling their kid the "dad joke"
I'm not even referencing the NSFW, I'm saying Dad jokes are corny, and sometimes painful, not sexual
So check out r/jokes for all types of jokes
r/unclejokes for dirty jokes
r/3amjokes for real weird and alot of OC
r/cleandadjokes If your really sick of seeing not dad jokes in r/dadjokes
Punchline !
Edit: this is not a post about NSFW , This is about jokes, knock knock jokes, blonde jokes, political jokes etc being posted in a dad joke sub
Edit 2: don't touch the thermostat

We told her she can lean on us for support. Although, we are going to have to change her driver's license, her height is going down by a foot. I don't want to go too far out on a limb here but it better not be a hack job.
Ants donβt even have the concept fathers, let alone a good dad joke. Keep r/ants out of my r/dadjokes.
But no, seriously. I understand rule 7 is great to have intelligent discussion, but sometimes it feels like 1 in 10 posts here is someone getting upset about the jokes on this sub. Let the mods deal with it, they regulate the sub.
