A list of puns related to "Computer Society"
I'm wondering how computers would be built in a communist society without centralized factories and supply chains - a computer is a very complex piece of technology and it seems difficult to coordinate the manufacturing and transportation of the CPU, the motherboard, the hard drive, etc. not to mention peripherals like the monitor, keyboards, USB ports, etc. Without a market to handle the distribution and production of all of these components, how could we produce computer technology on a mass scale?
Hey guys, I'm currently on the waiting list to get into CSC300H1 S but classes start tomorrow so i just wanted to know if anyone was taking the course and would be fine to message me their zoom information for the first lecture so that I don't miss much before i get in. I am currently in LEC0101 which is from Monday 10-12am but a zoom information for section LEC2501 or LEC5101 will also be just fine. Thanks in advance :)
I'm going into my 2nd semester of my freshman year, and I've completed CS111 and Calc151. I'm taking Seminars in Computers and Society to fulfill a core requirement. I looked online for reviews about the instructor and course and found some that said there is significant work. Does anyone know if this course is work heavy or if it is light and well-suited for a person who wants to get a CS major?
If not are there any other recommendations? I'm trying to fulfill the CCO requirement, but WCD is doable as well.
I've the feeling that computers could today be a very powerful tool to build socialism and then communism : with high level of calcul we could have very efficient sharing of ressources and economic previsions, and it would perfectly replace bureaucracy, who in history has often be very corrupted and became many time a new aristocracy
We could also have powerful direct democracy on a lot of decisions : for exemple Im an economist and so I see it as a wholesome tool to blend self-management of workplaces with economic development plans which could be decided democratically from online.
One other fun fact is that the main argument of Adam Smith for capitalism was that nobody could alone do an efficient economic planification, but you know why ? Today we can, thanks to AI.
Dont forget neither that an algorythm will follow the frame you gave it : an AI will never become a revisionnist against your political line, whichever it is, with an AI regulating a socialist economy, there is not the risk of ignorant people decades/centuries later reinstating capitalism
But Im not an expert of those technologies and I also obviously see that there could be many problems : a hack would be disastrous, bugs or breakdown too. We also have to worry about a new aristocracy of computer scientist.
What is your point of view ? What could those technologies bring to socialism, what are the risk and which place do they desserve ?

Then a boy is born with no past. he escapes the city, to a non-technical society on the same world, where people have telepathy.
There is a "jester" character" who has the role of causing disruption of the established order when he is reborn... to prevent stagnation.
Probably an adult book, definitely Sci-Fi, maybe form the 1970's.
Hey gang!
I had a worldbuilding idea the other day (inspired by this post) of a space-faring, no man's sky-esque civilization that was really bad at computers, but really good at everything else. I love the aesthetic of huge messes of op-amp wires, room-sized computers running an insanely crude 86-DOS like architecture (like this, or this!), and the thought of insanely complicated calculations being done by a horribly crude computer in the trunk of a spaceship. My solution to this? A society without digital computing.
What could it look like? How would an analog GUI or text-based operating system work without the simplicity of ones and zeros? For example, would an os built on vector graphics make more sense than bitmap? What could modern computing look like in our world today if we were electric-analog only? Would personal computing even be a thing? I'm hopelessly lost when it comes to these questions. Help!
How has the world improved from computer science? Iβm giving a presentation to kids and this question came up. So far I have Internet, GPS, human genome mapping and predicting and avoiding disasters. What else can I add?
Edit: thanks for all of the responses!
I'm sure many of us would think, "no way, society is way too complicated, humans are way too unpredictable." I think that's a good answer for where we are today with regards to computer science. But people living in the past can never really conceive of the type of scientific advances we have today, and us living right now might not know of what the future holds. There might be a point in the future where computational methods get so advanced that we just put "society" into a computer, run some tests, and get sociological answers. Of course, you'd have to define what society is, and that's already a problem, but I wonder if it would be possible to ever reach this stage where you might not even have to do studies in the "real world" anymore. You just run questions through an algorithm and get results. Are there people right now working on making this type of tech a possibility? Or is it something that will become the detriment of sociology? maybe we end up relying too much on computers and forget that society is made up of people.........
Hello guys, actually I'm in a strange situation, I can't leave my home since, you know, restrictions pushed me away from society for so long that I have lost contact with normal routine so much, trading cryptos and doing online basic things to earn something we can call an income, I came to a conclusion: Everything outside our private propriety is not divided in bad, good and neutral, instead is sacrificed, sacrificer and observer. Everything that we do not own (cloud, mail, social, and also electricity) is actually a big pump and dump. Sorry for the reference but when you see the perspective of the poor and then the perspective of the rich you start to see money as other's people time, people who have no clue of responsibility of submission, they think they are living being but they are actually only a shell, they are dying being. People leave the comfort of their home to work for fun, literally spending more than what they can afford and struggling to work more to go in some pub to drink overpriced toxic water to brag something to some guys that do not give a single fuck they are only waiting their bragging time or pogging in normieland. Guys do you see what people do? Are some of you guys luck enough to be observers? How would you explain the feel?
Actually I don't want advices like "see a psychiatrist lmao" or "welcome to capitalism"
I'm looking to work from my desk since I cannot work anymore outside my house because of subhumans populating this earth, people who can't forget the old fished way of living, literally I can't stand society anymore but since I have to pay bills and I have five year experience in communication and graphic design skills if anyone want to start a revolution Idk maybe I can make the flyers or some shit thank you and sorry if too much off topic rant I'm actually bewildered af

Thanks.
Hi! I'm looking for a full list of universities with JPCS chapters. The one on the official PCS website isn't updated :// Thank you!
