Is there an free/open source version of Computer Assisted Qualitative Data Analysis (CAQDA), an alternative to Nvivo?

Can anyone recommend anything that they are happy with?

What is your favourite free qualitative data analysis software?

I have been trying to shop around, but it seems like the most popular one doesn't work on mac, and I'm worried about not being able to effectively back up my data with some of the options I've seen.

My situation is that I'm writing ethnographic fieldnotes, so I want to have the ability to make discrete entries, but ideally also the option to code them.

I am also open to suggestions for free software/websites that would be useful for essentially making diary entries, which can easily be flipped through, and later inputted into maxqda when I eventually shell out for a license.

I may just end up using google docs, but it's very frustrating that my university doesn't provide licenses for this stuff. If you have any advice on how to get my university to pay for it that's also helpful!

What qualitative data analysis software do you guys use?

Hi!

I'm hoping to get my team to incorporate some qualitative coding/content analysis with our all-hands thematic analysis. My thinking is that using a software to help us code systematically across all data will minimize bias and help validate our insights. 1) what software do you use, if at all? I'm familiar with ATLAS.ti but was wondering if there is an industry-preferred option. But also, I've run into a bit of resistance from the other (junior) researcher on staff about incorporating such software. 2) If you do not use a software, what are your reasons for going 'analog' or what are your opinions against such software?

Thanks again! :)

Any qualitative analysis software that can self-analyze thematic or linguistic patterns in interview data (txt files or audio)?

I'm a grad student looking for a software to analyze my interview transcripts. I downloaded MaxQDA and familiarized myself with it and realized it relies on me coding my data by myself. I'm in a bit of a hurry to analyze over twenty 60 min+ interviews, so going through each and every single one isn't really an option right now. Plus, I've done much of the qual analysis myself already, so coding major themes won't be too helpful for me. Instead, I'm looking for themes I may have missed, and looking for a software that can support me and group data for me on its own.

Essentially, I'm looking for a software that will take the transcripts I have and analyze them itself for thematic similarities amongst groupings, or at the very least patterns in the language. If it can "self-code," all the better. If anything like this exists, please let me know. Also, if MaxQDA does have any sort of similar functionality and I've somehow missed it, please do let me know.

qualitative data analysis software

Hi all, I have developed open source qualitative data analysis software using Python3 and PyQt5. It is located at https://github.com/ccbogel/QualCoder/ and on Wordpress a how to use at https://qualcoder.wordpress.com/how-to-use/

It has been developed and used only on Ubuntu and Linux Mint so far. It can be used to code text and images. Codes can be hierarchically categorised similar to nvivo. I would be nice to get some feedback on it.

with regards Colin

Qualitative Data Analysis software for Mac?

Hi guys and gals,

I'm looking for recommendations/experiences with QDA software (e.g. nvivo, atlas.ti, maxqda). For my thesis I have to code and analyse a little over 120 pages of text and need a software solution that is reliable and cheap. I might be able to get a license for nvivo from my school but I'd like to try open source software alternatives.

If you have any suggestions please let me know!

Thanks

For sentiment analysis of tweets (qualitative research), can we manually classify the tweets based on sentiment instead of automated analysis by software?

Hello guys... I am an undergraduate geography student attempting a qualitative research

The research is linked to emotional geography and environment

As stated above, i want to do a sentiment analysis of tweets which are geotagged.... After the sentiment analysis my plan is to make an emotion map.

I know how to use ncapture and NVIVO for basic sentiment analysis but the problem is that it doesn't have the option of categorising tweets by place and then perform the analysis place by place.

So i was thinking if it will be alright to manually classify each tweet myself as positive, negative and neutral?

Qualitative Analysis Software Recommendations

I am interning for a research project right now. I realise that I'd need qualitative analysis software for analysing interview and observation schedules. I have used MAXQDA and NVivo on a trial basis before. Now, I don't have any access to them as I've already graduated from college. I also, obviously, can't afford licence keys for both as they're exorbitant.

Do you know of alternative qualitative analysis softwares that aren't as expensive and yet have most of the functionality? I found their aggregate code features especially useful.

Looking for qualitative analysis software that can detect coding done in word docs

I'm looking to see if there is any qualitative analysis software that can detect coding done in word documents (the word documents use two colors of text, underlined text, bold & underline text, capitalized text, and capitalized bolded text). I'm working on a qualitative project and we have been coding using word, but we want to import all the transcripts (more than 300 transcribed interviews) into some software once we are doing more focused analysis. Is anyone familiar with software that can do this? (i.e., software that can be told to put all green text into a category, put all capitalized text into a category, etc.).

Skills I should pick up for a bachelor thesis in heavily computer assisted data analysis or physics simulation?

As the title implies I'm an undergraduate in the upcoming fourth of six semesters. I'd like to do a thesis in something that heavily involves programming and or data analysis / visualisation.

Optional self description: I would describe myself as an advanced pc user. I picked up Java myself some time ago. I also had a lecture in basic C++ and Mathematica (it was aimed at people who never wrote code in their lives so rather basic) and I'm enrolled in an optional Matlab course this semester too. I also did some stuff in Python already. However I'm far from being a expert in any of them. I can handle basic structures, object oriented concepts and basic GUI in all them but I lack a deeper understanding or formal education.

What programs, programming languages or other skills do you recommend I should pick up before the thesis. Also can you give me examples of bachelor theses in said fields and what I could end up doing in my thesis (not actually picking a topic for me, just so I know what I can expect).

Thank you very much.

Recommended software/platform/process to analyse data in the form of 2-dimensional spatial locations with qualitative labels, and display information on neighbouring points, etc.

The data is a list of 'points' (around 10-20 thousand) for each 'case' (with around 80 'cases' to analyse overall). Each point has an x coordinate, a y coordinate, and a qualitative label in one of 8 type categories.

I want to analyse the spatial relationship between different labelled points in two ways.

  1. How far are each of the 7 different types of points from 1 special type? Which is the closest and which is the furthest, on average? I'm imagining illustrating this as a radial plot from the centre with 7 spokes and scatter/cloud/column plots along the spokes representing the distribution of distances from the special type of interest?
  2. What associations to the different point types make with eachother (an association being a neighbouring point in 2D space)? I'm imagining illustrating this with a chord plot where the circumference of the circle each type occupies is weighted by the relative frequency of that point type, and the chord widths between each type represents the relative frequency of that type being a neighbour to the type the chord connects it to

I have an idea of how to achieve 1 using crude tools but have no idea how to start with 2.

For what it's worth, this is biological data - each 'point' is a cell from a lymph node, each 'case' is a tile from a slide image with x and y coordinates of that tile, and the labels are different type of lymphocytes, lymphoma cells (i.e. the 'special type of point', and unassigned cells.

Qualitative Analysis Software

Hi everyone.

My team is stepping away from Dedoose as we're looking into some other software like Max QDA or NVivo. The main reason we're moving away from Dedoose is it's constant lagging, but we like everything else about it - especially the teamwork aspect of it where all of us can work on the same project in real time which is a super important feature for us as sometimes projects can be a on a tight deadline and that way we can help each other out.

I'm not sure if Max QDA or NVivo provide that? If not, do you have any recommendations now that you know what our needs are?

Thanks :)

An analysis of a computer-assisted work by the Peruvian composer CΓ©sar BolaΓ±os

https://centrodelsonido.pe/articulos/un-acercamiento-a-esepco-ii/

I stumbled upon this Peruvian article while browsing the internet. Figured this subreddit might be a cool place to place it in, particularly for anyone whose teaching might touch upon electroacoustic music, Latin American composers, and 20th century classical. The analysis of musical events is interesting, but the diagrams alone ought to be eye-catching for those weaned on DAWs or classical scores.

Also, if anyone knows of another subreddit that might appreciate this, let me know. Thanks.
