Fabric/zipper recommendation for compression packing cube?

I've got a fair bit of experience sewing, but mostly traditional garments with cotton and wool. I want to take a stab at making some packing cubes similar to Eagle Creek Specter Compression. I am unsure of what materials to start with. Eagle Creek mention 30D or 40D Nylon, but not the GSM. I would estimate 40gsm seems about right but I am really not sure. Furthermore, what kind of zippers should I be looking for?
