Thanks!

This semester I am in a third year Latin course on Latin prose, in which we have been reading excerpts from Caesarβs de Bello Gallico and Livyβs ab Urbe Condita. Next semester Iβll be in a class on Latin poetry.
I donβt know what we will be reading yet, but I am curious about what you all think will be the most noticeable differences between reading Latin prose and poetry.
I just recently finished and fell in love with Milk and Honey. I would love to get started on some poetry essentials every fan should read in their life. Any suggestions would be awesome, thanks!
I feel like I'm intimately aware of all of my friend's interests, but I just can't find a gift that would suit. He's very dear to me and I want to get him something he can truly appreciate. He lives half the world away.
He adores poetry, classic literature and has recently gotten into playing mandolin again.
Poets like Christopher Marlowe and Shakespeare are his favourite - although he's recently estranged himself from the later after reading a lot of historical documentation that painted him as far less than his status would suggest. But I think he likes that kind of writing anyway.
He's homosexual and finds comfort in classic poets or authors that are too. He got really into Marlowe's life and history.
He bought a mandolin recently. He likes writing too - he wrote me a sonnet once (can you tell I'm desperately trying to live up to his sentimentality), but I think he enjoys painting most. Works with acrylics.
He's had an awful year and I want to find him something that shows him how much I listen and care, but he's so much more cultured than me and I don't know where to start. Thanks for any help.
Last week's positivity thread had 521 comments -- a new record. This thread gives hope to a lot of our members, so keep those comments coming. And there's no rule saying you can't comment more than once (or five times) on each thread.
Also: come and participate in our first LOCKDOWN SKEPTICISM POETRY CONTEST -- a seriously unserious event. For details, see the pinned comment under this post.
Edited to add: Two days in, we have about 30 individual entries. Keep 'em coming!
What good things have gone down in your life recently? Any interesting plans for this week? Any news items that give you hope? Feel free to join the poetry contest for some extra fun.
This is a No Doomβ’ zone
Here is some classic shitty poetry from JS Power of www.sixsixfive.com:
This is my poem
It's not very good
It doesn't even rhyme
And I fucked the meter up a lot
this is a haiku
i'm not working hard on it
one two three four five
So far my jugs and vases have turned out fine
But so far I've made 3 jugs and a vase and they're lovely.
