EDIT: Called it...? I guess?
I've been thinking lately about Chengdu and why they aren't "up there" with the top teams.
For sure, they need to improve a lot more on coordination and teamwork. When things get to desperation mode, they fall back to their old habits of throwing ults when not needed, or stagger, or not pull out of fights when it's time to. This has definitely cost them many overtimes like the most recent games where they had a clear advantage with 1-2 minutes in over time, but they throw it away.
We all know Leave is absolutely cracked in many heroes, and can be argued as one of the top 3 DPS in the league. Leave is ultra consistent, and always seems to be able to make something happen at the most dire situations. But his DPS partner of Jimmy, Jinmu, and Kaneki has been inconsistent and spotty at best.
Jinmu's hero pool is not meta right now, in particular Pharah. His Sombra is honestly a disaster; I can expect them to lose the map when Jinmu flexes to Sombra. He's just not good on Sombra. I also think Chengdu is trying to reign back from relying on Jinmu to pull something out of his ass on Pharah, and instead rely on good coordination and teamwork to win fights. Because obviously if the other team shuts Jinmu down, then you can't make much happen.
Jimmy has looked the best with Leave so far, because Jimmy is a fairly low maintenance hit scan. His McCree, Widow, Ashe, has all looked A-tier at the minimal. But Jimmy is inconsistent and has a bit of a streaky performance at times. June Joust also didn't help Jimmy in his lack of proficiency with Reaper.
Kaneki meanwhile has been of a question mark. His Reaper play was.. for the lack of better words.. pretty bad. He showed almost zero presence in the June Joust, and made a lot of silly plays. I thought Kaneki would serve as a Tracer/Sombra specialist role, but it seems Leave has played that role to a great degree.
So from what I observe, Leave plays an incredible Tracer, Echo, McCree, Ashe, kind-of-Sombra (and anything else you need him to), while we need a consistent long range hitscan to complement Leave's flexibility.
Obviously Shy would be a cracked pickup for Chengdu, but seeing how much success he is having with Hangzhou right now, I doubt that will happen any time soon.
Who else is in Contenders/FA that can play such a role to a very high level? Who's also Chinese? Oh I don't know.. You may have heard of this person called Diya.
