Missing Since: July 1, 1973
Location Last Seen: Oakland, Alameda County, California
Ms. Cole ran away from a Synanon Foundation facility in Oakland, California, an institution that treated persons suffering from alcohol and drug abuse, where she was sent in 1972 by a Michigan judge when caught using drugs. She wrote to her family while she was there, and ran away sometime toward the end of 1972. She sent a letter in early February 1973 from an unknown location; that was the last time anyone heard from her. On January 4, 1974, a petition to the court of Michigan was granted to drop all charged against Ms. Cole.
The Synanon Foundation was founded by Charles Dederich, Sr. in 1958 as a rehabilitation center for both drug and alcohol addicts. Its headquarters was originally in Santa Monica, California, but as it gained popularity and wealth over the years, it had chapters in other California counties, Detroit, and as far away as Germany and Malaysia. Over the years, Synanon became a utopian society/ cult not unlike Jim Jones' Peoples Temple. Dederich declared Synanon a religion in 1974 and was forced to give up operations of Synanon when he pled no contest to conspiracy to commit murder in 1978.

Roseβs Letters:
(Letters shown at above link)
Rose sent a couple more letters home from Chinatown in San Francisco. These letters expressed some fear of being found by Synanon and brought back.
She mentioned a girl named Ruth who she had become friends with, and a man named Rick, who she disliked. (A Women claiming to be Ruth can be found in the comment section of this website.)
She no longer signed her full name, but only her initials. In her last letter, she said she would not be contacting her family again until she turned 18 and could not be ordered back to Synanon.
She additionally stated that she was staying in a big house with an older couple, and that sheβd contracted a kidney infection.
The last letter was written on her sixteenth birthday, December 23, 1972. It was not mailed until February 3, 1973 β sheβd added a note saying sheβd just gotten a stamp. This is the last positive cont

Hi!
Do you please know of any center where they help people with depression? A place where you stay for some time, they do therapy with you everyday and a bit of physical activity.
A family member is severely depressed, suicidal. They don't want to live anymore. We've been trying for a long time now, going with them to therapy or bring a joy into their life but it seems nothing is helping and we're exhausted.
We live in Chandigarh, but we're willing to travel anywhere within India.
If you know of any such place, please let me know.
Thank you.
I've recently heard the term "Women aren't rehabilitation centers for broken or insecure men" floating around in the pseudo-feminism movement. And I, as a woman, are flabbergasted and downright ashamed. The entire POINT of a HEALTHY relationship is to help each other through tough times and guide one another through their healing journey, and care for one another in every way one can. The fact that people think a woman shouldn't help a man sort out his insecurities and trauma is downright bullshit. We NEED to stop embracing these kinds of things are "empowering", they're not, they're just downright misandric and rude.
Does anyone know of any drug rehabilitation centers in the area that are outpatient and actually helpful? I have a loved one that is in need of one but the reviews of most of these places are minimal at best. I don't think they'd be willing to do inpatient treatment. Insurance is not an issue, nor is monetary requirements. We just need to find a place that actually works.
There is this PSA I'm trying to find. I think the place has a B at the start of its name. It had two PSAs but I remember this one:
Starts with a girl in a gray hoodie attacking a woman and demanding her to give her money, screaming. Then it cuts to the girl being put in a cell room and she breaks down, crying.
We then see her as a teenager and eating breakfast, being smacked upside the head by her dad and being called a "worthless little cow".
Then it goes to her in class and she is struggling to read a textbook while her classmates are laughing at her. She tearfully says "I don't know what it says, alright?".
Then the next clip is of her with another person. They are doing drugs and she has a tourniquet around her arm. Her eyes roll back and she collapses against the wall as she overdoses, the other person panics and looks around trying to help.
Then all the clips go faster and faster until a title card is shown, ending with the sounds of the girl crying.
I get my health insurance through my employer. As the title reads Iβd like to check into a rehabilitation center for drinking. Would HR be able to see this? In my mind it would be a huge breach of my personal information (HIPPA?)
I tried to Google it but really only ads for rehab centers that didn't tell me anything. I'm just guessing but I assume some rehabs or mental wards would maybe take obese people, but my main question is if there is any specifically for obesity and in particular over eating. Ya know like what you'd see on my 600lbs life.
Seems pretty odd that you can go to jail for decades for doing a drug. I don't advocate it by any means, but if the idea is truly to "rehabilitate" wouldn't it make more sense to give folks an opportunity to get clean through other means other than just sitting in a cell? Are there not better programs that could be used and funded/created to assist folks getting put of a cycle? Chances of repeat seempretty high under the current system.
I at times research how other countries deal with certain issues successfully. Perhaps other countries may have some decent alternatives as well. I'm all for using tax dollars to "actually" rehabilitate and prevent repeat cases while minimalizing time served whenever possible. A lot of folks do drugs largely due to their environment as well and not necessarily due to wanting to harm others or even themselves. I would just like to see other things tried as clearly the current system isn't the best by any means.
Why is the goal to punish more so than rehabilitate and help prevent future uses? A crap ton of these cases also come from impoverished communities where folks get very desperate. Could tax money not be used to build safer spots for youth to hang out and stay off the streets? Folks against spending tax dollars to improve communities would be against what tax dollars are for in the first place. Why would you not want to invest in the future? Rather than ignore or try to imprison these communities why not try to improve it?
At least attempt to offer safe spaces and perhaps safe transportation to it. I don't know. I am just curious if folks think the current way things are handled are truly the best way? Someone could have ounces of weed and go to prison for a VEEERY long time. Meanwhile, in another state it's not even an issue. Even hard drugs the idea is to punish and not help really. Put someone in box with bars does nothing to actually address the underlying behavior or upbringing that leads to folks being there in the first place and returning. There are other countries like Sweden that actually have systems in place with super low return rates.
These are for criminals actions in general (in Sweden) and not just drugs, but the idea was to actually treat folks more human and actually" help rehabilitate them. The way they are treated would likely shock most folks. This has actually led to jails being shut down due to not enough inmates (a good thing for society despite there being stupid private prisons
