Julius Caesar was given the nickname β€œQueen of Bithynia” from his (in)famous affair with King Nicomedes, which he subsequently denied. But was it based on fact?

And furthermore, if it was a real affair/relationship, how might later Augustan or Christian sources have sanitized Caesar’s life to fit a heteronormative narrative?

We have other prominent examples of important Romans who we might consider β€œQueer” today, but I’m curious if we can authentically view Caesar through that lens.

Bithynia Rome 2 Campaign advice

Hi everyone! So recently I decided to try out a campaign as the Bithynians in Rome 2 using a faction overhaul mod I found on steam (see here: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=479208783).

However, I kind of got myself stuck. I did manage to take out Tylis, and planned to move to take Odryssia (who at this point had taken out the Triballi). This was to grow my power while keeping Pontus and Macedon as buffer states. However, I kind of got stuck moving back and forth between Antheia and Odessos constantly taking and re-taking them. Meanwhile Sparta was wrecking Macedon and was soon on my doorstep while Pontus was getting smashed by Colchis.

This was all on medium because I'm not a great player tbh (hence why I'm coming here for advice). Any thoughts on alternative strategies for a 2ns attempt?

Was it ever revealed to what happened when Caesar overstayed his first ambassadorship to Bithynia?

I wondered this after reading the beginnings of his biography. Was it determined what he was doing there? As a starting out soldier, getting the civic crown was all he, Caesar, had done so far and this ambassadorship was his first test from the government. Why did he stay too long? He wasn't the only ambassador sent in Caesar's party so did others return to Rome while he overstayed an invitation? Did he get asked by a court member of Nicomedes to plot on Rome?

Let me know if you have any opinions based on logical rooting.

[CLAIM] The Second Byzantine Empire of Thrace and Bithynia

The Second Byzantium Empire of Thracia and Bithynia

Secunda Imperii Byzantini Threciae et Bithynia

Map

The darker red being the area I am claiming, with the lighter red being my future borders.

Flag

Using the Christian IX monogram at the heart of a double headed eagle symbolises the religious views of the Byzantine people.

Factbook

Under construction.

With the strategic location of the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles under her belt, Thrace was always going to become a major player. The capital city of Nova Constantinople, often called Analianople, named after Queen Analia II, wife to King Thanasis of the Flavius House, the esteemed royal house of the Mediterranean.

The geography of the region is interesting, as Old Turkey is now fractured and divided. A united rule would not therefore be beneficial. Thrace bears no ill to the Islamic world, but would like to them to keep their distance from Christian land.

[EVENT] The Second Byzantine Empire of Thracia and Bithynia responds to the new state

Cooperative Pact

A messenger was sent to the Kingdom of Lesser Thrace, with the intention of finding their intention and religion. They are know known to be of Orthodox faith, thus follow our very own Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, Archbishop Justinian of Analianople. Their intention is to simply exist, and they will. I declare that the Kingdom of Lesser Thrace a Grand Protectorate of Byzantium.

First, we have proposed a Cooperative Pact, which outlines our borders, relations, titles and so on. The clauses of the deal are as such:

Clauses

  • Clause 1 - The Kingdom of Lesser Thrace shall be henceforth be known as The Kingdom of Macedon, as being known 'Lesser Thrace' is demeaning and condescending to yourselves. Macedon was grand kingdom, and it is good to be associated with that.

  • Clause 2 - Your flag should look similar to this. This was created by the most esteemed cartographer in all the land. RM stands for Regnum Macedon or Kingdom of Macedon

  • Clause 3 - Your status as an independent protectorate will be protected by Byzantium. We will provide military, economic and social help to you. However, we do not expect this in return, as we understand if you cannot help.

  • Clause 4 - Your borders look like this and you will not expand. If you agree to the pact, citizens between our nations are allowed to travel freely, without hinderances like border checks.

The reason we are being nice is because your great kingdom is Orthodox, thus must be protected, fostered and helped. Please feel free to contest and add any clauses. We hope you agree to this pact, it will benefit both of us.

Did Caesar have sexual relations with the king of Bithynia?

Hi all, as I was talking to a friend a memory came up about Caesar’s time spent in Bithynia during his youth. I know for certain that there are rumors that he had sexual relations with the king. I would like to know:

how credible is this story?

I also heard that his soldiers were chanting something to mock him, but at this point I’m not sure if it’s true or not.

Thanks!

I understand that was a trade in the ancient world. people would go capture exotic animals to fight in the arena and what not. I find it hard to believe a king would be unable to get his hands on some baboons?
