Was Augustus Hill wrong for sabotaging Jackson Vahue's parole?

I can't help but feel a little conflicted. On one hand, Hill clearly did it out of petty and selfish reasons (Vahue not living up to his idealized version of who Hill thinks he should be). On the other hand, it forced Vahue to get clean and presumably straighten up his life.

augustus hill!

a lot of people disliked his character saying he was over-acting or took up too much screen time...y’all realize that’s the point and his greek chorus openings are supposed to offer a glimpse at the anti-realism of the show? like, he’s fantastic for that imo and the whole fact he breaks the fourth wall in episodes while also playing a regular character that DOESNT is dope. just curious why anyone doesn’t enjoy him?

Augustus Hill the narrator vs. Augustus Hill the inmate

Augustus Hill is objectively my favorite character within the series, and I’ve found myself fascinated with the dichotomy of the two versions of him presented.

I feel like he becomes a different style narrator as the show progresses. He seems angrier and more slang prone in the first season or two while onward seasons seem to see him become more whimsical and detached as the narration segments become more surreal with their visuals. He seemed to even become better spoken and lean into the Shakespearian aspects of his role in the tragedy.

Idk if it’s been expanded on, but I’m starting to take narrator Hill to be posthumous Hill reviewing the final years of his life via purgatory through the 4th wall.

Either way it’s brilliant acting and directing

What’s your favorite Augustus Hill monologue?

An appreciation for Augustus Hill, the glue that put the show together

Some people say that Beecher was the protagonist. Arguably, that might be true. But there was another character that I liked even more, and if you ask me, he was just as important(if not more)for the overall structure of "Oz".

Augustus delivers some of the best moments in the show, as both narrator and regular character. He doesn't get like, a lot of screen time, but I feel like every scene he is in ends up being very good. The actor is awesome(even though he's kind of a meme in Lost, lol)and of course the show is great for various reasons, but Augustus Hill provides a lot of context and "purpose". It's like the episodes are just things happening(I don't say this in a negative way: it actually makes the show somewhat realistic)and he puts together the pieces with his monologues. I like how even his death was just a "transition" for the character, because he still managed to be a narrator, providing a different perspective. He's by far my favorite character, and he was the glue that kept the show consistent, even during some the weirdest storylines(yeah, the aging pills).

Was there an out of universe reason why Augustus Hill was killed?

I just finished Season 5 and wow, that was unexpected. Also that cycle of hate with Vern and Tobias Beecher is never ending. Timmy Kirk is creepy. I feel really bad for Cyril. I like Redding, reminds me of a grandfather. One who slings cocaine and murders police officers and other people. So.... not that good of a guy, but poor Hill should have ratted out Poet. I loved Poet until he went back to his old ways. McManus just can't get anyone rehabilitated except Alvarez and Omar White. Omar White reminds me of a budget Wesley Snipes from Demolition man. Why does Father Makuda wear a jacket all the time over his priest uniform? Poor Cloutier. I just realized that was Sergeant Doakes in death row who died trying to escape. Also shame Shirley's mirror didn't get passed on. Also sometimes suspension of disbelief is pulled so far with Tobias's brother getting shanked in the visitor waiting room hall. Cloutier being attacked multiple times in the hospital private bed.

Dev Diary #29: The Xia

Prepare Yourself, Challenger

Greetings! I'm posting this on behalf of Redeye Flight, one of the many writers for Anbennar, and today they're here to introduce you to the crossroads of Haless – Xianjie – and the people and societies that have defined it for centuries through piety, simplicity, and devastating martial arts, known as the Xiaken. Yes, that’s right, Wuxia is coming to Anbennar.

Long kept to itself by philosophy and internal struggle, the lands of the Xian have been thrust into history’s way by the outside world, particularly the invasion of the Command. Whether this fractious land can even defend itself may be an open question – but a threat may be just what is needed to impel the Xiaken to truly rise to their potential. If they do, all of Haless may need to take heed of it, from the Paravimvata to the Northern Sea…

Behold Xianjie, a land of a thousand misty hills, each with a temple at its foot and a pavilion at its peak with students going through practice motions.

The Fragrant Domain

Xianjie rests between the holy Mount Tughayasa, the mighty river Kharunyana, the towering Phokhao Range, and the forbidding Demon Hills. It sits between Rahen, Yanshen, and southern Haless, and so has been marked by and left its mark on all three of them. Myriad cultures and races walk through its valleys and fields. Much of it is hilly and densely forested, with vast karst towers draped in tough trees, though it can also boast some of the finest farmland in the region and, above all else, incense. Xianjie’s nickname of β€œthe Fragrant Domain” comes from the myriad types of incense that grow in its hills and forests – fortunately, too, for the sake of the temples.

The people of Xianjie are among the most zealous followers of the Righteous Path in all of Haless, and for centuries they have been organized under the Xiaken – the great martial temples, nestled in its valleys, shrouded in its jungles, or perched atop its mountains, which oversee the care and organization of Xianjie’s people. None are more sacred than that of Xiadao, the point of balance within the universe, which lies at the heart of Xianjie and indeed of all of Haless. Guarded by the great fortress of the Liusibao, rising out of the Youxiahe River, control of the Xiadao means control of the Xiaken – but this is not an easy task.

Improving Hither: a professional DM's review (LONG post!)

I’m a professional DM who’s run quite a few groups (mostly kids!) through Hither now, and along the way I’ve found a bunch of things that work, a bunch of things that don’t, and implemented some fixes to improve the player experience. I’m going to share them here in the hopes that others find my insights useful!

I previously wrote a piece on the Carnival that you can find here.

Overview:

I’ll start each section with my thoughts on what needs fixing, and follow up with how I’ve improved it. Several of my solutions have been developed from inspiring posts on this very subreddit by other hardworking DM’s!

Witchlight can be extremely exposition-heavy, and the adventure often solves this by giving you info dumps to simply tell your players (see the Carousel at the Carnival). One of the most important things your party NEEDS to know are Zybilna’s Three Laws: Hospitality, Reciprocity, and Ownership. I play these as fundamental laws like gravity for Fey creatures: they cannot willingly break them, and seeing somebody else able to do so is fascinating and bewildering to them.

We’re not going to simply infodump these onto our players. We’re going to organically introduce them across the beginning of our adventure and show them in action, using the first three locations our players are going to encounter: the Queen’s Way, Slanty Tower, and Telemy Hill.

Queen’s Way:

Your party enters the Feywild on top of a giant walkway, 100ft above the murky swamp below. As written, the walkway serves absolutely no purpose: even the 100ft climb down is completely risk-free.

As a general rule, if you can remove something from a story and it has no effect, it’s a bad story element. I recommend that you use the Queen’s Way as a device to show your players the entire map of Prismeer (even though the adventure tells you not to: the adventure is wrong) because it gives them a sense of perspective, and a distant view of the Palace of Heart’s Desire, their end goal. It’s also immensely useful to get them thinking about ways to move through the mists from the get-go instead of dropping it on them later.

When they climb down, I call for a check: either Athletics or Survival/Nature (to find the sturdiest mushroom handholds) to clamber down, taking 3d6 falling damage on a fail. This may soften one or two characters up very slightly for the upcoming encounter.

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.
