Dealing with the Wonky Economy of D&D and Making Treasure Matter More!
Since the dawn of D&D players have chased treasure. Gold, Trinkets, Gems and Jewelry. Rarely do we do so with any form of realism. Metals are extremely heavy, and any realistic thought of carrying around tens of thousands of valuable metal coins is not only absurd but functionally impossible. Ever try and pick up a large change jar, like the kind you granny kept? Full Plate Armor weighs almost nothing compared to that sucker. But here is the thingβ¦ we donβt care. And we donβt care because it is fun to have 10k in gold coins jingling around in our pockets! I donβt know if we will ever do away with the nuttyness of carrying all those coins, but I do think we can do something about their value.
If youβre of the persuasion that the original D&D brand of cp, sp, ep, gp, and pp is the way you wanna go, and tracking all that is fun for you and your party then by all means keep on keeping on. Nothing wrong with that!
But I am about to suggest a little something I call The Ale Standard. A method of tracking and using a modified standard currency because I got a suspicion that a lot of us out there just donβt like dealing with the minutia of all those coins and conversions. We would also really like wealth to continue to matter, and in most cases matter more. Iβve noticed a trend toward βitemsβ and a lot more hand waving when it comes to money. Which is just fine if you like that. But I, and maybe you, may want to run games where every coin matters!
So letβs start with values. Assuming a metal rarity in your D&D world that is similar to our ownβ¦ How much is a gold coin actually worth? Most of us in our minds picture a pirate movie-esq doubloon sized gold coin. Which is pretty huge if you think about it. And for the most part fictional. Actual gold coins were typically much smaller. And to be honest, there was WAY more silver involved than "historical Fiction" would leave us to believe.
A U.S. dime. A coin worth 10% of a dollar weighs 2.268 grams. Gold currently sells for a little over $55 a gram depending on purity (US dollars). We will stick to $55 for simplicity. Gold has retained a pretty consistent value throughout human history. $55 can buy you some jeans and a tee-shirt today and that s

Don Bowman Harris
June 18, 1938 - November 30, 1999
Pioneer, innovator, electric violin master, multi instrumentalist, rock and roll madman, and blues man. Don βSugarcaneβ Harris was each and every one of these things to the core, be it as one half of Don & Dewey, as a solo performer, or while collaborating with the likes of Little Richard, Johnny Otis, Frank Zappa, and John Mayall to name a few.
Born and raised in Pasadena, California to a pair of carnival performers, Don Harris was a musical prodigy from a young age, studying classical violin from the age of six trough his late teens. In addition, he would become proficient on guitar, bass, piano, and harmonica. Then one day, the sound of his violin drifted into the streets and attracted the ears of a young lad named Dewey Terry. The two developed an instant rapport, and would form a Doo wop group called The Squires while in high school. The group would end up recording βLucy Louβ among a small handful of singles on Kicks, but proved unsuccessful. Both being accomplished songwriters and multi-instrumentalists, Don and Dewey decided to disband the Squires and begin life as...Don And Dewey.
After making one single for Shade, the two moved to Art Rupeβs label Specialty, home to much traditional pop along with the duoβs peers Little Richard and Larry Williams. If you thought Little Richard was dynamite, imagine two Little Richards on stage. Two guys with the powerful gospel shouts, the vocal trade offs between Donβs smoother vocal mixed in with Deweyβs gritty throttle predating the likes of Sam&Dave and the Righteous Brothers. And other than the odd session drummer, most notably the great Earl Palmer, it was largely the duo providing instrumentation. Dewey thrashing out some boogie woogie piano and some mean guitar licks straight out of the school of Guitar Slim. Don could provide some rock solid guitar, both could lay down some sweet walking lines on bass, and with the help of a tape cartridge hooked up to his old violin, Don introduced the electrified violin to rock and roll music.
The duo wound up crafting a pretty solid set of singles, ranging from the full throttle rockers of βJungle Hopβ and βKoko Joeβ, the energetic rhythm and blues of βHey Thelmaβ and βFarmer Joeβ, the gritty country blues of βPink Champagneβ, all through some surprisingly tender numbers like βThe Letterβ and βLeavinβ It All Up To Youβ. In later years, their songs would come to be co

He is 77 years old. And has two artificial kneecaps. Which stops Hrishikesh Mukherjee from being very active these days. Age and infirmity though have not deterred his zest for film-making. Even though Jhoot Bole Kauva Kaate is his first film in ten years, Hrishida - as he is known respectfully throughout the film industry - seems almost casual about this week's release of his latest film.
Hrishida has always made films with small budgets and the family at its core, films which have often hit the bull's eye at the box office. Films like Musafir with Dilip Kumar, Anupama and Satyakam with Dharmendra and Sharmila Tagore, Ashirwad with Ashok Kumar, Anand and Bawarchi with Rajesh Khanna, Guddi with Jaya Bhaduri, Abhimaan and Mili with Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan, Chupke Chupke with Dharmendra, Sharmila Tagore, Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan, Khubsoorat with Rekha and Golmaal with Amol Palekar.
Abruptly in the late eighties, Hrishida stopped making films. With the changing tastes and times, he didn't want to make films which people might not like. He moved to television for a while, directing 84 episodes.
What brought him back to the movies was the dream run films like Golmaal, Chupke Chupke and Khubsoorat had on the satellite television channels. Producers began to pester him to return to the sets. Convincing him took the best part of two years, and Polygram finally signed him on to make Jhoot Bole.
Hrishida never formally learned film-making. His dream of wanting to be a cinematographer led him to become a laboratory assistant. He went on to edit films for Bimal Roy, at whose instance he moved from Calcutta to Bombay in the early fifties. He edited all of Roy's films till Madhumati, after which he decided to direct his first film at good friend Dilip Kumar's behest.
Hrishida says Jhoot Bole... is a comedy, but the treatment is different. "It is very simple to be happy," he adds, "but it is so difficult to be simple."
Despite ill health, Hrishida took time off to speak with Sharmila Taliculam.
You have always worked with dedicated, serious actors. What do you think about actors today?
I have made lots of comedies apart from serious films. I have worked with brilliant artistes. But today such films are not being made. The actors then were great performers.

Other interests, college, friends and work took over and I was happy to drop the hobby in place of my other passions. In that period I would pick up a game, beat it and then not play for the rest of the year (botw being a big example of a game that made me feel like a kid again and binged through, but once i was done completely abandon playing games after). I broke out the old wii U (which i bought at launch and never played any game on pre or post botw) on a whim last october due to pandemic boredom and fell in love video games again, beating Majora's mask and a few other zelda titles. So this year Iβve actually made use of the Wii U, bought a switch, gone back to my steam library, and am currently picking up a ps4 off a friend to explore more in this wonderful medium. Iβve had a lot of down time and bad weather so Iβve made it through 40 games, though many are sub 10 hour games. Thereβs a lot of nintendo here but I broaden out to other developers as time goes on. Hereβs a rundown:
Super Metroid - 10/10
Basically My introduction to 2D metroidvanias. I loved metroid prime 2 back on the gamecube and always appreciated the series from afar but never actually gave it a real shot. This blew me away and is now one of my top 10 of all time. The environmental storytelling, the invisible tutorial, the constant feeling that youβre outsmarting the devs by going where you think you souldnβt be able to only to realize that youβre EXACTLY where the devs planned for you to be. This game grabbed me and didnβt let go. The map design is incredible and sucked me in completely. Iβve played many metroidvanias since this one and honestly none of them have captured that feeling of exploration the way super metroid does.
The Legend of Zelda - 4/10
I would LOVE this if I was a kid in the 80s who had the big physical map that came with the manual, who spent my seemingly endless free time exploring every nook and cranny, and then excitedly filling it in on my map. Then going to school the next day and trading secrets with my friends. It's an excellent collaborative experience that could be accomplished over months which is great for kids who cant afford new games, and especially in the 80s where most games can be beaten in one sitting. The rub? I'm not a kid in the 80s. It's unfair to say this game is a product of its time, because it's actually lightyears ahead of its time, but

I read the pinned megathread and this guy got doxxed bullied and pushed mentally so far that he's considering suicide? Seems like he hasn't been found so far (if the information I read was complete)?
I found a linked video where he's going all out abusive and it seems like a rap battle to me. Supposedly this is from where shit went downhill
My 2 cents on the situation:
β’I don't know who this "kode" is, but supposedly he's famous enough for getting into such trouble.
β’Battle rap is aggressive hence the term "battle". Aggression and vulgarity are elements used to break the morale of the opponent and these must not be perceived out of the context of the performance.
β’Telling your friend "gaand maar dunga" (English: I'll fuck your ass up) does not literally means you want to do that, it's a situational metaphoric expression.
β’ Rap music has energy and free flowing expression as its core elements. If this becomes the norm, i.e. harassing every Indian rapper who abuses, I feel it is safe to say we all can packup our dreams of seeing India as a big shot in the hip hop scene
β’ Legally speaking, article 19(2) of the constitution of india imposes reasonable restrictions on the freedom of speech which explicitly includes "public order, decency or morality" [yeah our right to free speech isn't as free as most people assume it is]
BUT
β’ If I understand correctly, his video is from 2016. Now according to the limitation period of the hate speech crimes under section 153(a) as well as section 295(a), he can't be prosecuted for these after 3 years of commission.
Therefore, strictly legally speaking, he cannot be touched on the Indian soil for the words he uttered in 2016, AND I do not know his age but if he was a minor back then, well then he has more protective measures for himself.
β’ He can instead file charges (starting from defamatory) against all the individuals and groups that are accusing him and trying to get him lynched, while using these accusations as a basis to acquire police protection and later monetary compensation as I read these ended up in him getting his contracts cancelled and major loss of money)
β’ A country where artists are questioned about their art needs to do some serious introspection about their insecurities
β’ This is another case of 'cancel culture' as far as I've been able to understand
β’Where were the critics when "choot vol. 1" came out and why is badshah not being harassed? Oh let me guess, because he has lawyers a

Go post NSFW jokes somewhere else. If I can't tell my kids this joke, then it is not a DAD JOKE.
If you feel it's appropriate to share NSFW jokes with your kids, that's on you. But a real, true dad joke should work for anyone's kid.
Mods... If you exist... Please, stop this madness. Rule #6 should simply not allow NSFW or (wtf) NSFL tags. Also, remember that MINORS browse this subreddit too? Why put that in rule #6, then allow NSFW???
Please consider changing rule #6. I love this sub, but the recent influx of NSFW tagged posts that get all the upvotes, just seem wrong when there are good solid DAD jokes being overlooked because of them.
Thank you,
A Dad.

So far nobody has given me a straight answer
I am currently in the hospital. I had a back operation yesterday. The surgical nurse came in my room and started asking questions about my back. She asked me if I had any falls during the last year. I responded just one. It was after summer.
She laughed and said in 20 years of doing this she never was told that joke.
Had to ground him until he could conduct himself properly.

Hi, I am planning on buying a laptop. I would be mainly using it for gaming( like Dark Souls 3, GTA V, Elden Ring in the future ), doing 2D digital art (might try 3D art as well) (I am beginner to 2D digital art), and also doing my college work which would involve using soft wares like MATLAB.
My budget is 80000 INR (Indian Rupees)
When I checked out the minimum requirements for the games, all of them listed a CPU which had base clock speed of 3.2 GHz atleast. And the CPUs in my budget have been showing either AMD Ryzen 5 4600H (base speed 3 Ghz) or i5-10300H (base speed 2.5Ghz). So I am confused as to whether I would be able to run those games. Even If I could, how would it affect the laptop (or CPU) because their base speed is lower than the minimum required.
In this budget, most of the GPU i have been able to find is GTX 1650 ti (GDDR6). Is it worth it?
..... Will get a reward.
The Bushes
I want to talk about my father and the wonderful influence he has had on my life,' he told the audience. 'He is a shining example of parenthood, and I love him more than words could ever do justice.'
At this point he seemed to struggle for words. After a pause, he looked up with a sly grin and said, 'Sorry, but it's really hard to read my fatherβs handwriting.'
Me : For starters, I bring a lot to the table
Well, toucan play at that game.
We know Prakash Jha as the man who made serious movies like Mrityudand, Gangaajal, Apaharan, Satyagraha and Raajneeti.
But there is a lot that we donβt know about the 63-year-old director.
For instance, Jha is presently learning the piano and loves to sing. He climbs 30 floors everyday in seven and a half minutes. Heβs a good cook, and cooks chicken curry in only one teaspoon of oil!
Prakash Jha talks to Patcy N/ Rediff.com about his life and his movies, the struggle to make it on his own, and the eventual payoff.
#'I left home with Rs 300'
I was born in Champaran, in north Bihar. I went to boarding school at the age of nine, in Hazaribagh, Jharkhand.
My family is into farming; my father was a zamindar. My younger brother still takes care of our land and farm. My younger sister is married and has three kids.
My batch-mates in school were opting for the army; they have become lieutenant-generals and major-generals now.
But I wanted to be a painter.
I was not interested in studies, but I did not have the guts to tell my parents. I went to Delhi University to study but I quit midway and returned to my village.
If you belong to a zamindar family in Bihar, where they only manufacture IAS and IPS officers, you are expected to be in the civil service. There was a lot of pressure from parents, teachers and the society to join the civil service. But I said I wanted to be a painter.
I had a tough time.
I bought a Yashica camera, and left home with Rs 300. By then, my relations with my parents had soured. My father did not talk to me for nearly five years.
#'I worked at a restaurant as the assistant manager in the kitchen. My salary was Rs 300'
On the train to Mumbai, I became acquainted with a building contractor. He took me with him to his building in Dahisar. Many boys stayed there - some were his workers and some had run away from their homes. I lived with him and in return, worked for him like writing his accounts.
I wanted to enroll in the JJ School of Arts, but the semester had started and they asked me to come next year.
I met an art director called Agha Jani. He was working on the film Dharma (1973), starring Pran, Rekha and Navin Nischol. The shooting of the film was at the Sun nβ Sand Hotel, in Juhu. I watched the shoot for one whole day and was zapped. I decided that this is what I want to do.
Agha Jaani introduced me to Chandsaab (the director of the film) and I became his assistant on the film.
I realised that I had to le
