The awful behaviour of some anti-vaxxers has been winding me up for a while now. Examples include them bullying baristas who are just trying to do their jobs, ruining a kids cricket match, and all the comparisons of our government to the Nazis.
Well today it all boiled over. A Karen was giving a couple of young cashiers a hard time at my local supermarket. I sidled over to get a good listen to what she was saying, and it was the usual shite: " You guys are useless... don't they train you properly... I want to speak to the manager...". Typical Karen bullying a young minimum wage worker.
So I intervened: I told her exactly what I thought of her (some rude words were said!), then I calmly walked back to my line, apologised to the other customers for my foul language (tho the lady in front of me said no apologies needed, she enjoyed me calling Karen a Karen!), paid, thanked the cashier, and left.
Help, for the life of me I can't figure out what this was from.
It was either an official music video, or a viral video that used a famous song.
Multiple people had words written on them in black marker
The words were what bullies said to them or made fun of them for.
Examples "gay" "fat" "ugly" etc.
The overall message was about being stronger than the words putting you down.
I thought Christina Aguilera- Beautiful, but the video is nothing like this.
It's anti bullying week! You know what that means?
A week where schools pretend to deal with the problem but don't. Students are taught about bullying and why it's wrong but ignore that information for the rest of the year. And teachers think that this week fills their quota of dealing with bullying for the whole year.
I was 5 when anti bullying week started and yet I was still bullied throughout my whole childhood, shut down by teachers when trying to reach out for help and ignored by bus fulls of bystanders.
If anti-bullying week did absolutely anything then maybe Mr Jones would have told the bullies off instead of saying it's just friendly banter when they would constantly make me cry, make me feel uncomfortable and stole my belongings. Maybe the teacher assistant wouldn't have told me off for "telling tales" when I told her about the boy who was physically violent to me. Maybe at least one student would have stood up for me all the times I was given death threats and strangled on the packed school bus.
I have so many more stories of being bullied and more stories of teachers shutting me down. So just trust me when I say anti-bullying week is a cute little hello kitty band-aid on a headless corpse.
I'm not ABD, and my wife is American, but non-desi, so neither of us have any direct experience with being of south Asian heritage in a typical US school setting.
I lurk on this sub sometimes, and while I've definitely seen a range of experiences about people's K-12 experiences, most of what I read here seems to skew extremely negatively. However, I understand that this might also be due to a sampling bias. So, how common and intense is racially-backed bullying at school? What are the best tools/strategies that I can equip my son to deal with it, while also doing away with any internalized racism? I mean, I have certainly experienced racism from non-desis, but it's different as an adult.
Also, an unrelated question - We want to raise him bilingual - I'm a native Tamil speaker, and I'd like to teach him to understand and speak Tamil when he's younger. Can any other parent here in a similar situation chime in about the best methods that worked for you?
Rant: in woke 2019, there are certain spirit days I canβt get behind in schools, and Nerd day is one of them. Thereβs an acute irony to a Middle school following their anti-bullying day with a βNerdβ day. No students should be bullied for caring about school, and they shouldnβt be encouraged to perpetuate a βpoindexterβ archetype created in the 80s. Everyone knows a βnerdβ is someone who wears glasses and a bow tie and suspenders. But real nerds come in all shapes and sizes. And a love for learning should be fostered. ESPECIALLY in a school where most students are apathetic about participating in class. Next time you see a βnerdβ costume, think about the young girl being laughed at for knowing the answer to the teacherβs question, or engaging with a relevant question, or being unironically enthusiastic about stuff. Think about how she will begin to be ashamed of her intelligence and passion. How she will stop putting in as much effort to avoid ridicule by peers. Nerds make the world go βround. Weβre not going anywhere, and we donβt look like Revenge of the Nerds.
Just make sure to get Roman over, you fucking bullies.
