Has anyone here ever processed and consumed acorns?

My son and I were playing under a pin oak yesterday. We just collected all the acorns into a pile (that's about the most fun you get with a toddler). I've never paid a lot of attention to acorns. These were about the size of a blueberry, had a thin but tough shell and a cap.

I know these were a staple for rust belt natives. How were they processed? Anyone done it before? I'd love absurd detail, I'm hoping to try it when my son gets older.

Edit: Lots of great responses. Does anyone know, do they have to be harvested from the ground or can you pluck from the tree?

Concept pitch: A Complete Oak and Acorn Rework.

Two of the plants most in need of fine tuning, in my opinion.

Oak and Acorn are a strange pair of plants. In some respects they’re considered overpowered, like The Super Sap trap or the Hardened upgrade. Yet they struggle in many other ways with basic kill power and survivability. Even their ability to synergize, their most basic gimmick, is alarming subpar, as neither party gets much out of the exchange. This rework is intended to make the two work more functionally as a team, as well as accent some of their playstyles when you’re alone.

The main principles for this rework are as follows:

  • Oak and Acorn are a TEAM. No one unit should get more out of the exchange than another.
  • Oak is big and vulnerable, so his most prominent needs revolve around survivability
  • Acorn is small and agile, but should lack offensive options to compensate. After all, we already have a small assassin character in Nightcap, and Acorn doesn’t need to be that too.
  • Acorn should be fine at winning a 1v1 scenario, but have trouble dealing with multiple opponents.
  • Oak, on the other hand, needs to be very good at crowd control to justify his large presence, but his abilities can’t just be an instant kill or they’ll have to be nerfed to the point of unusability.
  • A fully loaded Oak should be just as threatening as a fully loaded Space Station. No dumb discrepancies, they should counter and balance each other equally.
  • Lastly, Acorn should be as beginner friendly as any other class to encourage other players to play as them and not just Oak.

With all that in mind, we’re looking for a simple but reliable class that prioritizes mobility and survivability over raw offensive power, and a large, formidable class that can handle multiple zombies, but needs adequate support to do so efficiently. That way, when they team up, the two can cover each other’s bases and make for a formidable threat to the Zombies.

  1. Acorn (Basic Attributes)
  • Increase sprinting movement speed
  • Decrease shell shot damage 7(8) -> 5(6)
  • Hold (jump) to hover in the air by spinning leaf legs, Acorn moves around much faster this way. Hover cancels sprinting.

Base Acorn is designed to have the two aspects that Oak lacks: mobility, and survivability. These changes are intended to make surviving an encounter, or escaping one you are ill equipped for, much easier. The weakening of his primary is to balance out with his increased mobility.

  1. Sap Trap (complete rework)
  • Recharge set to 15 seconds.
  • Sap
