Hi all, I'm working with the Semtech SX1280 2.4GHz radio IC, and I had a question involving their datasheet section on the packet architecture for their GFSK mode. Here's the full quote:

"The GFSK packet format provides a conventional packet format for application in proprietary Non-Return-to-Zero (NRZ) coded, long range, low energy communication links. The packet format has built-in facilities for CRC checking of the payload and dynamic payload size. Optionally a whitening-transformation based upon Pseudo-Random Number Generation (PRNG) can be enabled. The GFSK packet is used with FSK modulation Two main packet formats are available in the GFSK frame: fixed-length and variable-length packets."

My question is, what is a whitening-transformation, and what are its uses in digital wireless communications? For context, I've provided the datasheet below.

I don't understand why we would want to whiten data.

All I see is a scatter plot, where the data looks like it has correlation (where we can interpret data from it) and then turn it into a sphere where we can't take any data from it.

What's the purpose of this?

To me it feels like, we are taking something that is linearly correlated, like lets say amount of gas used per distance traveled, and taking the data, putting it in a sphere, and basically making it seem like there is no relationship between distance traveled and gas used when thats obviously not true.

Saw this video a while back, last year or the year before I think, pretty sure it was TikTok or something very similar. Cannot find it for the life of me. I just thought it was funny.

"Whitening toothpaste + TikTok" and similar searches only have quasi-ads and not the actual joke video

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

I still have some work to do (bonding, crown lengthening, whitening) but this is easily one of the most transformative decisions I have ever made. I can't recommend Invisalign enough. Three decades of insecurity gone in 6 months with 30 pieces of plastic. I never thought my gap was that big until it closed. I have a set of 90 highly autocorrelated time series and I am interested in whitening them in such a way as to remove as much of the autocorrelation as possible.

My initial thought was to replace each series with a transformed series such that every value x_t is replaced by h(x_t | x(t-1), x(t-2)...x(t-τ)), where h( | ) is the local conditional entropy and τ is the embedding dimension.

It then occurred to me that, for Gaussian variables, this might be equivalent to serially regressing out increasing lags: first calculate the residuals when correlating X(-1) against X_0 and re-z-score, then calculate the residuals when correlating the last residual time series against X(-2), and so on for τ steps.

Is there a reason this would work?
