Wavelength‐Selective Photopolymerization of Hybrid Acrylate‐Oxetane Liquid Crystals

A wavelength‐selective photopolymerization process of a hybrid acrylate‐oxetane cholesteric liquid crystal monomer mixture was developed. Control over the sequence and rate of both polymerizations allows for control over phase separation within the interpenetrating network structure. The structurally colored cholesteric coatings could be used to monitor the phase separation.

Abstract

We report on the wavelength‐selective photopolymerization of a hybrid acrylate‐oxetane cholesteric liquid crystal monomer mixture. By controlling the sequence and rate of the orthogonal free‐radical and cationic photopolymerization reactions, it is possible to control the degree of phase separation in the resulting liquid crystal interpenetrating networks. We show that this can be used to tune the reflective color of the structurally colored coatings produced. Conversely, the structural color can be used to monitor the degree of phase separation. Our new photopolymerization procedure allows for structuring liquid crystal networks in three dimensions, which has great potential for fabricating liquid crystal polymer materials with programmable functional properties.

Morita–Baylis–Hillman‐Type [3,3]‐Rearrangement: Switching from Z‐ to E‐Selective α‐Arylation by New Rearrangement Partners

Previously, we showcased Z‐selective Morita–Baylis–Hillman‐type [3,3]‐rearrangement of aryl sulfoxides. In contrast, we describe herein the MBH‐type rearrangement of aryl iodanes with the opposite stereoselectivity. Both protocols complement each other allowing for the synthesis of E‐ or Z‐α‐aryl α,β‐unsaturated carbonyl derivatives on demand.

Abstract

α‐aryl α,β‐unsaturated carbonyls represent an important class of derivatizable synthetic intermediates, however, the synthesis of such compounds still remains a challenge. Recently, we showcased a novel Z‐selective α‐arylation of α,β‐unsaturated nitriles with aryl sulfoxides via [3,3]‐rearrangement involving an Morita–Baylis–Hillman (MBH) process. Herein, we demonstrate the feasibility of reversing the stereoselectivity of such MBH‐type [3,3]‐rearrangement by switching to a new pair of rearrangement partners consisting of aryl iodanes and α,β‐unsaturated oxazolines. As a result, the two protocols complement each other in approaching E‐ or Z‐α‐aryl α,β‐unsaturated carbonyl derivatives. Mechanistic studies reveal a possible reaction pathway and provide an explanation for the opposite stereoselectivities.

Not on same wavelength with one employee and it's becoming a nightmare

I have about 10 people, mostly working from home in various capacities but a couple in our workshop who come in. One of the WFH people (lives a couple states over actually) has been getting more and more disengaged. They are on projects doing unique tasks that no one else in the company knows much about. Even before the pandemic they were remote, and seemed to be ok with that kind of arrangement.

I understand not everyone is going to be 100% invested in work and love what they're doing. But we have to deliver for our customers. The problem is in this communicating priorities. I'll say that we're a month away from needing to meet a delivery, and they'll panic and say they have to pull out all the stops. So I'll say no, it's not that dire, we can contact the customer and get it pushed back. No reason to be panicking and risk sub-par work or some bug that comes back to haunt us. But then they'll totally slack off. So I'll remind them the goal has just been delayed, not put off forever. Then they trudge along, miss internal deadlines which they helped define, get stuck, start talking about how stressed they are etc. Then as we get to just a couple of weeks from shipping I'll remind them of the promise date and they freak out and panic again, and get mad at me for "not communicating" information they already had.

Easy answer is this is just someone who can't manage their time and get work done, at least not in this environment, and I should replace them. Won't be trivial, but if I get someone who can handle things more professionally maybe worth it.

Or is there something obvious I'm missing that would help fix this? Thanks for reading and any advice.

Edit: Several of you are mentioning ADHD. I'm not ignoring your comments, I'm thinking about them precisely because I don't know much about it. Maybe this is an issue and should be addressed in the ways some of you are suggesting, thank you sincerely.

Edit2: I've engaged mostly about the direct employment or project management questions. Thank you to all for your advice and perspectives, it's really helped anchor me from where I was on this. For now I plan to try a simple PIP with goals and followup. If he hates it and quits then that's that, but I'll do my best to be positive. I look back on some past projects that he really nailed and worry about a mediocre replacement that has to be trained. So, it's not that I'm a softie, I've fired before and gone out to celebrate after because it

There was a ringing noise, somewhere in the world. That was a problem. Dr. Prescott had said, “no side effects” of course. He'd repeated it verbally, in writing, in forms, emails, phone calls, even a fax, often enough that the words had lost any form of meaning, just another drop in the sea of promises that Eliza most certainly did not believe. But she’d thought, if anything, that she’d wake up blind. Her hearing had never been on the table.

Eliza groaned. She tried to sit up, but a hand pressed against her shoulder, keeping her down. She was laying in a bed. The ringing noise was changing. It was misshapen. Unnatural. It was a dull roar now, as of…

Wind?

“Easy now, easy. That’s it. That’s it.” said a man. Soft and slow like he was talking an animal. Maybe horses. “How do you feel?”

Eliza lay easy, tranquil, as the man, Dr. Prescott, asked his battery of questions. Like he’d said before they put her under, she was wearing a blindfold. He hadn’t said anything about not taking it off.

But it wasn’t the first time someone hadn’t said, and for what they were paying her even Eliza could do tranquil. They could tranquilize her again for all she cared if that took away the noise.

Matured now on the edges of her consciousness, it still sounded like the wind. Eliza had never gone in for irony, you had to have something to appreciate when something else went deliciously wrong. Irony was people like the good doctor and his friends. Eliza thought that what she had hardly qualified her.

Three floors down, if they hadn’t moved her, a broken violin lay in a locker with her name on it. Broken, still, so Eliza didn’t give a shit about irony right now. Irony could fuck off until she was gone and the luthier's work was done. Until she heard the perfect, pristine notes that she’d grown up with and shaped her life around.

They could tranquilize her again. Fix it. Prescott owed that, at least.

“Are you ready?” Dr. Prescott said, the last of the questions for now.

In answer Eliza swung her legs off the bed, pointing herself towards the dull, windy roar that she still heard. They might have moved her, she thought. That meant her violin could be anywhere, a problem, but it also meant that the roar could be equipment, something for the surgery. Or a window open in a freak windstorm that Dr. Prescott was conveniently avoiding for some such “experimental” purpose. It could be anything at all, it could even go away when she opened up her eyes.

Eliza opened her eyes. The s
