King of Italy Victor Emmanuel III with his wife Queen Helen. The king was called by Italians Sciaboletta ("little saber"), due to his height of 1.53m (5 ft 0 in). His short stature was probably due to inbreeding, since both his parents and grandparents were first cousins. Photo from 1937 [1402x965]

Happy new year! Hope your New Years dinner was less awkward than this dinner at the Cairo Royal Palace in 1947, where Victor Emmanuel III of Italy and Zog of Albania ended up sitting next to each other, separated only by the (evidently unamused) Queen Fawzia of Iran

TIL that King Victor Emmanuel III of Italy was called "little saber" because his short stature (1.53m) required his uniform to be equipped with a saber shorter than the ordinary in order to not touch the floor when it was attached to the belt.

Authenticated letter to a Cardinal(?) from Victor Emmanuel III, King of Italy 1900-1946. Letter dated 1893.
My grandmother-in-law gave me a box of family documents to help in ancestry research. What I wasnโt expecting to find amongst the papers was an authenticated letter from the King of Italy. It seems to be addressed to "Your Eminent Lord Cardinal Piccolomini."
Pic of outside of letter, pic of letter/signature, and pic of authentication.
The google translation of the letter reads: Eminent Lord, With particular satisfaction we have received the good wishes and kind sentiments that Your Eminence has expressed to us on the recurrence of the Holy Christmas Holidays and we offer you sincere thanks. In ascertaining, therefore, your Eminence that We too desire every prosperity, we gladly take advantage of this propitious opportunity to innovate the acts of our very distinguished esteem. From Turin on March 28, 1893
I have no frame of reference for stuff like this, so absolutely no clue on its worth. Like, is it just an interesting memento to have? Or should I get this insured? Would appreciate any insight, even just a ballpark.

King Victor Emmanuel III of Italy's reign
What can you say about his reign during fascist rule in Italy? Do you think that fascism/the corporate state is compatible with a constitutional monarchy? Some fascists/third positionists are actually in favor of having a monarchy such as Oswald Mosley who believed that once an English Fascist state is established, the monarchy shall remain and shall receive the utmost respect of the new government.

Why did Victor Emmanuel III of Italy see his son Umberto as being unfit for a king?
I just read the article on the referendum which turned Italy into a republic, but I was surprised to read that the previous monarch held a low opinion of his successor.

Why didn't King Victor Emmanuel III of Italy stop Mussolini's power grab?
The King I guess would had seen it coming. Did the king have powers at hand to stop a rogue government like Mussolini? And was he not worried about the rise of such an incendiary ideology, or was he helpless under the laws of Italy then?
