What's a historical lie that's widely believed to be true in your country?

In Venezuela most people seem to believe that the Captaincy General of Venezuela was one of the poorest Spanish colonies, which is true for the 16th century and the former half of the 17th century; but actually, authors like RamΓ³n DΓaz SΓ‘nchez wrote that 18th and 19th century Venezuela was the 2nd most prosperous agrarian colony, just after Cuba. Also, according to Giuseppe de Corso, Venezuela during the late 18th and early 19th century was the third colony in terms of PBI per capita, just after Cuba and MΓ©xico. Even during the colonial period there are the writings of some French officials (who all seem to conclude that Venezuela was a very nice place) and Humboldt, who says that Caracas was one of the nicest cities in the world, and talks very positively about Venezuela in general.

There's also the people who believe that Caracas just had 2 cars when JosΓ© Gregorio HernΓ‘ndez was road killed, when there actually were 700.

Bonus: this is not believed here, but some people say Juan Vicente GΓ³mez was Stalin's father. A very weird conspiracy theory...

Updated list of every Usopp's lie that came true

Yesterday I was surprised to find out that many people on this subreddit don't know that many lies Usopp told through the series happened later on in the series, making his lies more like prophecies.

In fact, some people even call it a bad theory before bothering to actually look up how many of his lies came true.

So, as a reminder for the subreddit:

Usopp's lies are prophecies theory

Every theory needs evidence, so let's start with that.

The color spread that started it all

This theory rose in popularity after some readers noticed peculiar text on Usopp's swimsuit in this color spread: [take a look at Usopp's swimsuit] {https://www.opfanpage.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/1-16.jpg}

List of lies that became true:

  1. Usopp was introduced as a character similar to the main character from the story "The boy who cried wolf". His first lie in the series, pirates coming to attack the village, happened in the same arc we were introduced to him.

  2. While telling stories of his brave adventures to Kaya, he mentions a large goldfish whose poop is so big that it becomes an island. At the end of Little Garden arc, we see Dorry and Broggy beat a large goldfish, while mentioning that its poop is so big that it becomes an island.

  3. He spoke to Kaya about a country of dwarves, which was confirmed when we were introduced to the Tontatta.

  4. Mentioned a huge mole to Kaya, later ended up fighting mrs. Merry Christmas in Arabasta.

  5. Spoke of a cerberus in one of his stories - Thriller Bark arc had the Straw Hats meet a cerberus zombie.

  6. Mentioned a dragon in one of his stories - the crew met a dragon in Punk Hazard.

  7. Although a bit more vague, he said that he's an expert sniper, which is true nonetheless of him being Sogeking.

  8. Said that Luffy's 30 million bounty is actually his. Later down the line, Usopp's first bounty ends up being 30 million.

  9. To get the monster trio's attention, Usopp yelled that a beautiful swordswoman is coming carrying meat. This happened with Rebecca in Dressrosa.

  10. Called himself a singing pirate in Skypiea, later on got a catchy theme song as Sogeking.

  11. MISTRANSLATION Usopp often mentions how he has "can't go to that island" disease. Oden flashback spoilers: >!turns out the disease is real since Buggy got it before the crew could reach Laugh Tale!<

List of lies that have yet to come true:

  1. Being born on Sniper Island. He was most likely born in Syrup Village, but it's possible that b

Simple question, looking for insight please. Who is it exactly that decides what’s true information, and who is it deciding that it’s a lie?

My whole entire life that I’ve studied science both in school, at museums, and for fun it’s always been an evolving, shifting and changing field. So I’m very perplexed why right now in this political climate of covid people are treating β€œscience” in absolutes. As if it can’t change, be better, or be proven wrong. It’s a very dangerous mishandling of the field of science and a disservice to all its founders. Is it just because the fear to save a life outweighs the value in second guessing something?

Reflections of a Lazy Learner... Among all the proof that Mormonism is a lie, there was one thing that always stood out: the church’s endless crusade to prove that it’s true.

Nothing confirmed the falseness of Mormonism for me more than its limitless obsession with trying to establish its veracity. Shouldn’t truth be self-evident? Stand on its own? Require no defense? If you have to work so damn hard to convince everyone you have the truth, it’s pretty clear you don’t have it.

2 truths and 1 lie, write down 2 facts about your world and 1 lie about your world, then other worldbuilders will reply with what they think are the 2 true facts about your world and which one is a lie.

The name is pretty self-explanatory, just remember to.

  • NOT actively state which two are the facts and which one is a lie in the original post itself.

  • Be polite and respectful towards each other.

  • People put effort into their posts, so make sure to give underrated posts an upvote and a reply.
