2 skull ambush, and I'm rehabilitating myself into these after a disaster in a 1 skull when starting out. How hard can this one be?
I've got the Vanilla Plus mod installed, for batshit crazy Gonzo anything goes gameplay - for any given weight, I might face anything from an original game IS mech to a Star League version to an insane Clan omnimech.
Anyway, flatish desert map. I'm rocking a Victor, Archer, Shadow Cat A and a Medusa, a 50T clan tech brawler that's in the CAB, piloted by Medusa. All with a mix of standard and clan tech. The Victor has ECM, which is an experience.
My two clan mechs hit the convey early and get some good kills. The vehicles are autocannon heavy and not that scary all things considered. There's a Spider and Commando that are very hard to kill, using evasion and positioning very well but they seem to be spending a lot of effort trying to cancel the Victor's cloaking.
The two heavier escort mechs are out of sight due to terrain so all my mechs are trying to position for convoy vehicle shots. Once they are destroyed (one had a UAC20, so every gun was turned on it) the Shadow Cat tires of missing the Commando and sensor locks the 40T medium, to reveal a Viper. We've had LRMs from the 75T mech, so I'm assuming it's an Orion.
Victor and Archer move up and get shots on the Viper from the same side, and blow off a leg and torso, and the other mechs kill it early the next turn.
Then the 75T abomination walks over the ridge, and unloads an alpha that goes on for far too long on Medusa, that's thankfully in cover a fair distance away. Still loses 250 armour. I think I understand what it was like encountering clan mechs for the first time. The game gave me an animation of it coming over the hill and I was scared
Shots strip armour from the TW the next turn, and it fires another alpha at the Archer, forcing it to retreat to indirect fire distance. The TW is running very hot now, though. The Victor moves to the flank and, combined with long range Shadow Cat lasers, manages to punch a hole in a torso.
The Medusa has gone to chase and destroy the teflon Commando by this stage.
Glitch in the Archer had reserved until phase 1, and puts 40 LRMs into the Timber Wolf's damaged torso, hitting ammo and getting a knockdown.
Then it gets up and fires all remaining weapons at the Victor.
There's also a weaponless Spider following the Victor around at this stage, trying to nullify the ECM each turn.
