If the graph of a sine is a two dimensional wave and a wave on the sea is three dimensional, how many dimensions do the light and sound waves have?

Surely it can't be the same three dimensions as a sea wave, since they travel at every direction unlike the sea wave which only travels horizontally.

Sound waves are three-dimensional but usually represented in two dimensions. I want to visualize a 3D sound wave, and I want to understand which parts of the 3D sound wave are represented in the 2D graph.

#I don't have enough knowledge to ask high-quality questions I want to increase my understanding of sound waves and how we graph them, but I don't know enough about the topic to understand what I don't know.

##In general, I think I want to:

  1. Be able to accurately visualize an ideal sound wave in three dimensions.
  2. Understand the relationship between 2D graphs (models) and the actual 3D nature of sound.

#Some potential questions

  1. What information is represented in the two-dimensional graph?
  2. What information is not represented?
  3. Does limiting the 3D-information to a 2D-graph cause serious problems when using the graph to achieve a goal?
  4. I suspect that 2D-graphs rarely (or never) cause analytical problems. If true, then why not?
  5. How can I accurately visualize sound waves in three dimensions?

#Some of my thoughts that precipitated my questions

##I turned an audio-speaker upside-down and I realized that sound seems to never be upside-down or tilted.

  1. I assume there is a technical term for this characteristic, but I don't know what it is.
  2. I suspect that sound waves have radial symmetryΒΉ and that symmetry is a factor in this characteristic.

##I suspect my current three-dimensional representation of an ideal sound wave is wrong.

  1. I currently imagine an ideal sound wave as a circular helixΒ² (but not a helicoid surface).

  2. The radius of the helix is the amplitude.

  3. The wavelength is measured between adjacent "peaks." (More precisely? The shortest distance between two points of the helix on a line that is parallel to the axis of the helix.)

  4. A helix is "clockwise" or "counterclockwise" (chiralΒΉ).

  5. If sound waves are helixes, and if helixes are chiral, then two sound waves with different chirality, but that are otherwise the same, should be perceptively different. (At the very least, the ability to differentiate must be analogous to the polarity of light.)

  6. But that feels wrong.

  7. I've never heard‑ anyone says this is true. (‑ The pun was unintentional.)

  8. I can't think of a situation that suggests it is true.

  9. I can't imagine how an audio-speaker could be modified to change chirality.

Would you read a fanfic that starts off with bashed characters, only for said characters to grow out of it and become three-dimensional?

Bearing in mind, that the fanfic states that any bashed characters will quickly (but organically) grow out of it.

Now, this wouldn't mean that the characters would have to be like canon; characters can still be AU, while being three-dimensional. Would you read such a fanfic? Bashing fanfics are bad, but we never see bashed characters develop into proper characters -- makes sense, since those who bash (excessively) are unlikely to want them to become three-dimensional.

There have been scientists talking about how a 2 dimensional object would observe a being from our dimension inserting something into it it’s view. Suddenly something would appear and it would have no concept of what it was or how it got there.

Anyone aware of computer simulations or human developed simulations of what another dimensional object would look like to us? Don’t get hung up on that dimension being time, it could be something else. Seems like something that computable and could explain a lot of what we’re seeing with ufos.

Any interest in a color-based three-dimensional graphing function? (Feedback)

1080p plot of an arbitrary f(x,y) I optimized for demo purposes (i.e., sat around fiddling with operations until I found a function that looks really cool)

This is my first post here, so I'll get the obligatory hello out of the way first. I'm learning R for an undergraduate course on biostatistics, and we haven't learned much more than sapply() and chisq.test in the course, so I'm a complete novice trying to teach myself.

Somehow or other while working on a an entirely unrelated assignment involving basic statistical tests, I got wrapped up in a little side-trip trying to create a function that could graph another function of two variables on the X,Y-plane representing the Z axis with colors. This led me down a rabbit hole where I've spent probably 75% of the past week and a half obsessing over this thing that nobody asked me to do, completely blowing off the actual assignment in the process. At this point I've come far along with it that I'm getting ready to polish it up and release it somewhere as a full package. Considering how much I've put into this and how much it's cost me, I'm really hoping someone else out there might appreciate my handiwork as well.

Hopefully I'll have a pretty picture on Reddit to go with this post, and I just uploaded a handful of demo plots to imgur, which you can see here. On a few of the graphs, I pasted the specific call line used to generate the graph using the function, so you can see what it takes to use.

Here's a list of features that are currently polished out and fully functioning:

  • Obviously, it makes a plot. Basic things like setting the X/Y-limits are required.
  • Configurable resolution. The default is 360p, but unless your're plotting an unnecessarily complex function that requires dozens of iterations for every pixel (like the one I wrote for the assignment), it can generate a 1080p image in about 30 seconds or less. Some optional features, like contour lines, can increase the processing time.
  • Configurable color resolution. This is actually important for a lot of reasons, most of which only matter to the person writing the code.
  • Automatically generated color scales. The scale is always scaled from the lowest to the highest value of Z, and there are a wide range of built-in palettes along with many options for configuration. These in

Seeking advice for creating immersive three-dimensional projection!

Hallo, I have a uni project wherein my plan is to create an immersive pod/room surrounded by blackout curtains and with quadraphonic surround sound, and a slow moving liquidy projection. I am looking for alternative ways to utilise a projector to bring more dimension to the installation, rather than just having the video playing on a large wall or screen.

Does anybody have any experience, or ideas, for how I could go about this? I have been looking into using fog screens that can be walked through and touched, disrupting the patterns in the image with the swirling fog, but think it might be too expensive or complex.

I was also thinking that maybe some kind of near-transparent fabric could be used, possibly cut into hundreds of thin strips and hanging vertically, which might make it appear three dimensional while still being able to be walked through, but I have never experimented with a projector like this and am unsure if it would work.

Any thoughts? Throw anything at me! I am essentially trying to make a bootleg hologram here, which unfortunately mostly exists in sci-fi.

Much love xoxo

I am failing to solve the maximisation step analytically, does anyone have any suggestions or research directions to solve this problem?

My mush-brained unvaccinated brother-in-law is skirting the booster requirement for my annual Zoom Xmas Extravaganza by throwing a THREE-DIMENSIONAL, NO HOLDS-BARRED, BYOB FREE-MOUTHER OMICRON GATHERING at his house on the big day. Beside myself right now. I can't let this happen right?

I don’t know what’s come over my family. Even my cousin Leroy is flaking on my big Zoom party, and HE holds the family record for reciting the most β€˜Glory Be to the CDCs” in a 72 hour period (we actually had to call the fire department). I’ve worked so hard to make this year perfect. I dropped nearly all of the money in my baby son’s college fund to get Adele to join the Zoom call and perform while we all ate Zoom dinner through our dinner masks. I hired a trombone player to make womp womp womp sounds during my HermanCainAward powerpoint presentation. I had it all planned out, but my PLAGUE RAT brother-in-law Jeff is drawing my entire family to his house on Christmas. During a pandemic.

Like, I’m not crazy right? I’m not crazy for being inconsolably upset at the idea of my vaccinated family shuffling around that horse paste shill’s house while he sprays his anti-vax particles all over MY FAMILY. It goes against EVERYTHING our glorious prophet and his devout Archangels (68.9 billion MBUT) have foretold about the Omicron variant, which I am not taking lightly and have not slept a wink because of. NOT A WINK. And now this plague rat is fucking up MY Christmas party in MY house on MY computer with MY family.

Nearly all members of my extended family (at least the ones that answer my weekly COVID trivia questions in the family group chat) have jumped ship to Jeff’s variant party. The only ones who have my back are my Uncle Vinny, who can’t hold a conversation to save his life and never shuts up about cryptocurrency, my niece Shannon, who’s 3 and doesn’t know what the fucks going on anyways, and her imaginary friend Steve, who I’ve never met but have heard he’s taking Omicron very seriously. My baby son is also going to be there, but he’ll be talking about baby matters with Shannon the whole time. That just leaves me Vinny and Steve. I’m bad at small talk, and I can only listen to Vinny talk about blockchain and Elon Musk for so long.

What kind of party is that? Who’s gonna be my pandemic Pictionary partner? What am I gonna tell Adele? I can’t play the trombone. UGH WHAT THE FUCK is wrong with people. Has everyone lost their mind? Just get boosted and come to my Zoom party, it’s really not that hard guys. I’m not letting my family get COVID because that Joe Rogan-afficionado Jeff gets some sort of sick thrill off of unmasked, unboosted, and uncensored social interaction. You can mess with me, but if you mess with MY FAMILY, you’re also messing with me,
